This statement concerns me...

"We're holding the date for two reasons," EA Games boss Frank Gibeau stated. "First, we don't want to tip off the competition..."

If they are concerned about tipping off the competition about their release date, to me (and yes this is my personal opinion and nothing more) that means that they are not confident in their product.

    Simple marketting.

I'm more concerned about people nitpicking just to find reasons to talk shit about a game...

Its a smart move honestly. SWTOR is one of the more hyped MMOS that we have seen in quite a while, and with so much positive feedback from events like the Fan Site Summit, its no question that this game is going to have a rather massive launch. You can be certain other companies are keeping a close eye on when this game is going to release, and most would be foolish to not pull out all their tricks in an order to maintain current subscribers and not lose them to SWTOR, which does have the potential to keep players invested over a period of time unlike other games of late.

Anything can be looked at negatively, but from a business stand point which game making still is, this move makes perfect sense.

I somewhat agree.  The recent reviews of the play testing got them a little worried about the state of there game I think.

Ea doesnt have the best reputation you know, if blizzard starts realeasing their info about their new mmo most people will go to blizzard since they have the reputation of the "good polished" games company

Gw2, tera, rift are new BIG upcoming mmos that could steal a big chunk of swtors population while wow is in the middle and laughes while those mmos are trying to kill eachother and after the fight blizzard comes in with their new mmo and kill everyone...

Sorry but if the devs are truly overly confident in their came i dont believe its gonna be a good game, the dev has just too low standards/brains and thinks its awesome and "coolzorz".

Publishers though always like to exxagerate and look confident for obvious reason

Plus like most said its blizzard marketing 101: Keeping the release date secret so people wont get dispaonted if its pushed back while also hyping up everyone slowly by anouncing the game 100 years before release

This is just marketing.  Simply if you state a release date too far away from the time of release then any other company close to done can simply cut a few corners, release slightly before you and put those corners back in later to attempt to steal your thunder.

Giving a release date much closer to the actual release will make this harder as it will give other companies less time to react to your release.

This is normally not too much of aproblem in single player games, however this is one area where the MMO market is different.  People will tend to only stick to their game and may venture into others at certain times.  EA just wants that main MMO to be SW:ToR and who can really blame them.  This is the MMO they are counting on. So they are trying to give it a big bang and want to make sure any of the other contenders don't get a chance to react and steal some of that bang away.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

What did you expect from an EA talking head  :/

He probably thinks TOR is some type of sports game.

Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...

Which would be quite odd, considering that most recent previews have been overwhelmingly positive.

And second, it takes time to launder that much embezzled cash and prepare to get it and themselves relocated to a nice non extradition country. Not to mention all the time it takes to set up faking their own deaths, and whipping up a quick, but good two day preview event to bamboozle eagle eyed, hard nosed reporters such as Mike Bitton. You know, considering all the work involved covering their tracks they might as well have just gone ahead and made the game after all.

    Hehe, seconded.

Anyway, who knows? Maybe Blizzard has Diablo 3 lying on the shelf in a semi-finished state at this time, armed and ready to be used as a tactical weapon to impact a Swtor or GW2 launch.

As long as the game is released complete, unlike many other MMORPG's that launch and burn. If it were me I would say, "the game will launch when I am damned good and ready to launch it".

their is having confidence of their product

and then their is looking to maximize their profits with little interruption as possible

i am certain they are aiming to obtain both when the time comes.

    they call it drifting.

What competition are they talking about because quite honestly if your game is good then it does not matter when it releases, people will come on droves to play it. If they are hoping they can sneak in a 2011 release date without GW2 releasing then it doesn't sound like they are very confident at all.

What they should do is give a date that is well after its planned release date, and just pull an overnight release without telling anyone.  Tripping up the others, just for the hell of it.

They've said it is going to be digital anyway, so they wouldn't have to worry about physical stores dropping the ball like they have a tendency to do.  Something tells me that EA has the capability to host all their own bandwidth, so they wouldn't need to bother with online distro partners if they really wanted to.

Well it looks like they learned their Lesson from WAR. War "Could" have been great but EA Forced it out early, So worried about $$$'s that it snake bit them.

    Highly doubtful.
