So, I've been looking for a newer MMO that I haven't played too much yet and that still held some new and mysterious things for me to see and experience.
Basically, I was looking for a MMO where I could still feel like a complete newbie. I know it's common for people to want to know as much as they can going into a MMO so there aren't too many surprises and not too much to learn in-game. For me, though, I love the feeling of being in a brand-new world where everything is new and strange. I've tried pretty much every MMO I've been interested in of the current crop, and others I'm curious about still haven't launched...
So.. I decided to give AoC another go.
I'd tried AoC a few times in the past, right around launch and a couple times since.. but at those times, it just didn't "click" with me. I was into other MMOs, etc.
This time around, though, it's definitely clicking and I'm finding myself genuinely enjoying myself. I am quite happily getting that "lost newbie" feeling that I was hoping for. I've found a guild of very cool, very helpful and very friendly people on Set. My fortune wasn't so good with guilds my last times around, which I'm sure didn't help my impression much. So, I definitely lucked out this time.
I'm also finding the community to be very active. Global chat is constantly going. Sometimes they're talking about inane stuff and the inevitable discussion of other MMOs comes up. But at other times, I've seen some really interesting discussions taking place. I see a lot of people looking to start a group for a raid (presumably), or existing ones looking to fill out their remaining positions... So it's a mixed bag there. Regardless... It's very much a lively community, which is good to see.
Needless to say, the world is #%^$! gorgeous. I'm not just talking graphics, which are awesome as well. I'm talking about the detail and scope of the world itself. Not one environment I've been in yet, wilderness, town or dungeon, feels or looks at all generic. Everything looks like it's been carefully hand-crafted. Being a fan of game design, and environment design in particular... it's a visual orgasm every time I enter someplace new. I'm genuinely impressed with what Funcom have created, especially post Tortage. For all the praise it gets, Tortage has actually had the weakest impression on me. Go figure.
I played from like... 2PM yesterday and, aside from a few breaks for food, bathroom and such, didn't really stop 'til about 11:30 last night. It was a lazy Sunday... very dreary and rainy, and I had nowhere to be and nothing else to do. So, yeah.. that's how I spent my time lol. Point is... I haven't spent that much time in a game in one sitting, MMO or otherwise, in a long time.
I know all the flack it's gotten and I know all the complaints people have. I've read them all in forums and, even had one person in game griping about stuff, really making me wonder why someone would continue playing something this person so clearly wasn't enjoying from how they ranted about it.
Anyway... that aside...
I do have a couple questions regarding the client though. This time around it's doing a couple things it never did before...
1. It doesn't save my preferences correctly when I log out/quit game. Specifically, it won't stay in full-screen mode and it keeps losing the positioning of my two hot-bars.
2. Every time I start up the launcher, it says that some data may have been corrupted and recommends doing a complete scan. This is particularly annoying as it takes a lot longer before I'm able to launch the game itself each time I want to play. I'm actually typing this as it's doing the scan right now :-p.
The only difference I can think of is that this time around, I'm using the DX10 client where I don't think I was last time.
So... anyone who might have an idea of why this is happening?
Thanks!

If you haven't been in the Cimmerian regions yet, then you're in for a treat, especially if you've reached Eiglophian Mountains and further, the atmosphere and music is beyond normal, simply divine. Many times that I stopped there just to listen and capture the atmosphere, nothing made it feel truly, perfectly Conan's world of Hyboria as those regions, at least to me.
As for your client problems, I can't help you there. I've had the same sort of problems but can't recall what the exact solutions for them was. I recall that I checked the technical forums to find the solution. I do know that to get DX10 working properly I used a different executable that's in the same folder, one specifically for DX10.
Anyway, good luck, I hope you get it sorted out.

1. AOCQS might help you. If you don't trust the link Google/Bing AOCQS and read up on it. You can get it from Curs's AOC section. I've used it and it might help with the full screen issue. Works great for me because it gets you right to the login screen.

2. I get number 2 constantly. Just ignore it and keep going. You should still be able to play. I have yet to crash when I tell it not to do a full scan.

Hmm that sounds interesting. Might check that out.
Interestingly, last night when I logged in, I didn't get that "data might be corrupted" message... and the game started in full-screen this time.
Only thing is that some of my interface elements were still reset back to their default positions.. while others were where I left them.
Very odd.
