Lead Battle Planner Akihiko Matsui has released the blueprint that he and his team have been working on for changes that were coming to Final Fantasy XIV's combat system and the list of changes coming is far more detailed than expected. Check out the full blueprint put forward by Matsui and see all of the changes that will be coming to Final Fantasy XIV's combat system
I would like to clarify here that the battle team’s overarching objective is to lay a solid foundation upon which to build new elements - elements that will bring out the best in FINAL FANTASY XIV. The marriage of classes and jobs is representative of this endeavor. Whereas the ease of play classes offer will find favor with solo and casual party players, jobs will add a new depth of enjoyment for those wishing to take on high-level, strategy-rich content.

I have been really wanting to try out this game since its release, but i've been pushed back by negative reviews. There have been positive and truthful reviews that lure my closer with every reading. This new combat system, if it works for the better, may pull me in completely.
looks great, but takes time sadly.
interesting. i dunno if i like the idea of aggro meters though, that's always been more fun when it is a mystery to me.
the struggle to free myself from restraints becomes my very shackles
It's very interesting.. I almost gave up on this game but I'm a little excited now.
Yay
"JobsThe job system - that series-defining trademark - will be implemented in FINAL FANTASY XIV (details such as specific jobs TBA). Quests to unlock each job will become available once you have reached a certain rank in the corresponding class.
Rather than being advanced versions of classes, we would like players to think of jobs as specialized playing styles optimized for partying. While playing as a particular job will render you unable to equip certain actions of other classes, you will be compensated with access to exclusive actions, which can be acquired through quests.
In practice, players will find the existing classes effective when playing solo or in certain party setups. Jobs, however, will shine in party situations where specific skill sets are demanded. Now, you didn’t hear this from me, but there are also rumors circulating that quests for obtaining job-exclusive equipment are also in the pipes."
That's what I want to hear and see. That was the draw of FFXI and should have been the draw of FFXIV long before launch. I LOVED questing for my advanced jobs in FFXI. It was hard, fun and you felt like you accomplished something when you got them and then you had a whole 70+ levels of that new job to play with. Definitely a step in the right direction with this design decision.
Also, is anyone else enjoying these little letters that show us how they are redesigning the game? I have to admit, I myself am intrigued by it, it isn't something we get to see as these games are being created. Usually we get the summary and end result of things like how battle systems are implemented. I like this transparency and showing us their design process, even if half of what they say sounds like a Star Trek episode. Algorithms and such, hehe.
OMFG
This is the best mmorpg news I've read in a long time.
FFXI's job system isn't perfect, and this post seems aware of that, but I'm so glad to see it come to 14 in some way.
Spec'ing properly is a gateway drug.

Looks good to me, I'll still sit here and wait for all this stuff to actually be implemented. Then I'll go pick up a copy of the game along with some other people I know. I hope they get all these fixes done and get the game awesome, then release it on the PS3 so there will be an influx of people to play with. Kind of like what happened in FFXI...
Exciting news, im glad they are still working on the game after the events of its release and restructure.
This does give me new hopes for the game, it was supposed to replace wow for me, maybe in time it will.
/cross-fingers
Sounds good, but I don't think i would be willing to pay a subscription fee after all this time.
Im excited. i actually just went and bought the game 2 weeks ago.
Btw Any people on here currently playing it? Im LF people to link witht
Hmmmm the dungeons will be ready for the 1.18 patch, which will be in June. The dungeons are also being designed with the new battle system in mind. So it looks like we will get at least half of this pretty soon.
^ That on top of implementing the job system from FFXI that I loved so much will be enough to bring me back for sure if it is all done well.
Jobs!!?? yep you got my attention now, dont screw it up and they are almost guarenteed a return of the playerbase.
yeah...I'll probably be returning in june
i am very happy that SqE has learned humility from their ff14 launch debacle and are really going towards making it a great game.
I'm close to getting back into it myself.
RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

The changes they propose are making it more and more like 11 in a lot of good ways in my opinion, and I'm extremely excited about every single one of their announced changes. However I notice they still don't have any plans to add male mithra / miquote and I didn't see any more on the whole jumping thing. I sorta feel like they should reconsider on guy cats, guy cats are cool, also I do hope they go through with adding in a jump feature. I was an avid fan of FFXI for over 4 years and I would love to see a game similar to it, but lets be honest. If the game is too much like FFXI then everyone will just call it like they see it. FFXI-2. They need to add in more things that make it unique and its own game.
If they can roll out the PC specific UI improvements and fixes at the same time as all this other stuff..Ill definetly be returning.

Is there any particular reason why eveyone is concerned with the abilitiy to jump? Not one single FF game has jumping as anything other then a fighting ability. What exactly does it add other then some arbitrary feature to allow turds to just spam it over and over when you're standing outside of or on your way to some activity? I hate to say it but from my experience that's 99% of what people do with jumping in mmos.
Yes!
Some of the other information ranged from "eh" to "interesting" to me...
The section about Jobs, though, really jumped out as a BIG +++.
Not only are Jobs making a return, you will have to quest for them. I just hope the quest lines are even half as interesting as the storylines for the ones in XI. Say what you will about Dragoon, for example, the storyline to that job quest was awesome. And the conclusion of it, upon defeating the two NMs for the helmet, was genuinely moving in classic SE fashion.
Speaking of armor ... We'll be questing for job specific armor as well... Does anyone else hear an echo of "Artifact Armor" in that? Again... BIG +++ to me. Something else to strive for that benefits your character.
I really and truly hope that's just one example of ways in which they are bringing a sense of achievement through meaningful goals that players can strive for.
I'd pretty much given up hope on this game, but this update in particular has put XIV back on my radar.... It's still very tentative... but it's there.

I havent seen any great outcry for jumping.. but it could possible been useful for all those invisible blockades/walls like when running across the landscape and you come upon a 2 footdrop or little cliff and you had to go around it.. but I think they have smoothed out alot of those landscape/collision issues.

That's been an overly debated point of contention with players.
There have been myriad attempts by people trying to argue it as a "necessary function", but none stand up against even the most basic scrutiny. When you strip through the rhetoric, they all basically boil down to "I want to jump... because I really want to jump".
To me, the bottom line is basically this... a game doesn't "need" jumping unless its design mandates it. In other words, if there's nowhere in the game that you can't reach by simply running there... then jumping isn't required. As it stands, there's nowhere in XIV that you can't reach by running/walking there. Thus, jumping isn't necessary.
Also, there are far too many successful - highly successful - games out there that have no jumping, but are still critically acclaimed and highly regarded. All the more proof that - when it comes down to "wants" versus "needs" - jumping is 100% a "want"... not a "need" ... though some will try their damndest to argue otherwise.
For example, I don't know about you, but I don't recall any reviews for Ocarina of Time saying "OoT could have been a huge success - perhaps even go down as one of the best games ever made - if only had the ability to jump anytime or anywhere you want, even when it's not necessary". Of course, OoT has gone down as one of the greatest games ever made... and it didn't have a jump button such as some would insist is "mandatory". And... that's just one example.
FFVII... One of the most revered RPGs ever... No jump button. Didn't seem to harm it did it? Nope. Why? Didn't need it.
And so forth...

Oh then you missed all the "fun". Heheh.
Jumping was a huge point of debate on these forums, on the beta forums... on FFXIVcore, Eorzeapedia... etc. etc.
There were some people who otherwise loved the game, but refused to play it if SE didn't add jumping (or so they claimed).
There have been a handful of people who have - at the exclusion of all the actual reasons the game didn't do well - insist that "no one plays the game because there's no jumping". Of course, what that pretty much means is they don't play the game because there's no jumping. Of course, appealing to some phantom "majority" they claim to speak for seems to be a popular tactic for some when simply voicing their own opinion isn't good enough for them and they'll settle for no less than "being right".
But anyway... yeah... that was a huge debate for a while. I think people just got bored of arguing about it.

I just feel like there is a long list of things I would rather have SE fix and content I would like them to implement and jumping isn't on that list. I brought it back up because someone mentioned it here and I do remember it being a big deal before and wanted to stamp it out. Unknowingly I guess I opened the dialogue up instead. Anyways as far as I'm concerned jumping isn't very "final fanatasyish" so I don't want it or need it.
As far as things I do need and want in order for me to pick this game back up. It appears they are going in the right direction. Bringing back auto attack instead of spamming the same button over and over. Adding dungeons and more NMs, changing up the combat to make it more about skill and rewarding good skill. All good things.
I have to agree with people addressing concerns about having a seperate UI for PC.
Is there any word on when this impending doom is going to come? or when they'll open up Ishgard the new Jueno like city?
I just feel like right now all there is to do is, level by leves, by grinding, doing a few missions here and there and then killing a small list of NMs. After that you have crafting and gathering. For me to jump back in I guess I want more. Coming from ffxi the list of things to do is almost endless or at least until they raised the cap now all there is to do is abysea and so I don't really play now.
So other than Level, do a few missions, kill a few NMs, crafting and gathering, what else can I do right now? When that answer is good and long I'll be in the game.
Yes but that would be logical and make sense.
Sometimes people can't handle that sort of overload.

I believe if they could create a moving physics where when you try to scale an incline or a ledge higher than you, it automatically moves and animates your character to move over the obstacle like in Gears of War and Call of Duty. I know its completely different as far as genre but i remember when seeing the prompt to hit a key/button to get over something, it made the game seem a bit more fluid the quicker you hit the button when it told you. If SE could put in an action key, to talk to npcs and to jump over gaps or climb, that would improve FFXIV's physics by a crapton.
