im glad to see not so manny people taking thief ^.^ from what i've seen about it it looks pritty fucking sweet (is their any more info about the thief class besides the official class page)?
Engineer is what raised my interest in the game, was waiting for something mechanical, tinkery and tactical. Flavord with alchemy, couldn't be better. Second option is the mesmer or whatever.
What I am finding interesting is that we have a relatively even spread except for the elementalist and engineer. From the other threads, with so many (I would assume) fans complaining about the existence of the engineer, and with mage/wizard classes being so popular in general (and I feel like there are a good many in GW now as well), I would not expect that difference.
Necromancer is a bit higher than others, but I suppose that is to be expected: people seem to love necro and thief style deviousness (feeling kind of like the bad guy), not to mention their incredible utility and raw power in GW.
Do you really think the engineer is so high because it is the new class in town, or is it really so popular because it is different from the standard fantasy RPG fare? And why is elementalist so far down? That confuses me.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it." Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
Well, I think the truth of the matter is is that ont everyone is a Tru Fantasy die-hard (and by that, i mean the philosophy that reckons that fantasy has to be Medieval + Magic, despite loads of literature, films, and games to the contrary), so when you have a majority that isn't comprised of fantasy die-hards, the response is surprising. What I think is going on here is that many, like myself, have grown tired of the old Medieval + Magic trope, and want something a little more... I don't know, different?
Clockpunk is great because it's different, and people are also going to love the asura because whilst they still use magicks, tehy use weird reality-bending quantum magicks, so it's not the same deal. This is why there seem to be a lot of people drawn to the charr and the asura, they offer something that isn't typical Tru Fantasy. Humans, norns, and sylvari? They all fit into the Tru Fantasy trope - the humans are typically nobles and rogues in tall castles and ghettos, nothing new there, the norn are more tribal and spiritual people, and that's been done before, and finally the sylvari are pretty much straight up dryads, barring the hivemind aspect.
I think that fantasy has been around for a long time now, it's undergone many deviations, and not all fantasy is Tru Fantasy, as it were. There are many examples of fantasy that have included various forms of technology, even high tech. Is everyone familiar with Wizardry? Fairly typical fantasy stable, right? Well, the latter parts of that series had all sorts of tech, even starships that talked to my understanding. It's something I've been yammering about with a friend, because these divigations are fun.
Steampunk, clockpunk, atompunk, dieselpunk, all attempts to divigate from the fantasy norm, to try and do something new and interesting. People are starved for weird and off the wall things, and the Engineer isn't just technology, it's clockpunk technology, everything the Engineer does barring the grenades is clockwork. Clockwork shields, in their weaponry, the turrets, it's everywhere! And that's interesting, and the charr even have a giant clockwork city. It's kind of the thing that you dream about, but few developers have the balls to actually put into a game, preferring to stay with the normal stuff out of the worry that it might offend those who believe that anything that isn't Magic or Medieval is therefore not fantasy.
I sort of view the Tru Fantasy approach as kind of like Twilight, it's a bit of a blight on what fantasy is supposed to be. Fantasy is supposed to be fantastic, but here's the thing - mages have been done to death, we're so familiar with them to the point that we're bored of them. So the Elementalist is just a case of 'oh look, another magie that throws fireballs,' which is kind of understandable really. What's happened is that the Tru Fantasy trope has been overused so much, that it's become boring. Because everything fantasy-related has mages wot throw fireballs.
Now, the Mesmer on the other hand? The Mesmer will rake in the votes too, because it's highly unusual, you can't look at many Tru Fantasy settings and find anything like the Mesmer. The interesting thing with Guild Wars 2 is that it's a mash up, it's partly Tru Fantasy to appeal to those who just want Medieval = Magic, but the other part is the more fantastic part, and that's the part that includes the Mesmer. That's why it'll be there and it's going to score big.
Maybe I'm saying all of this because I'm old. But the whole *punk thing is still relatively new to me, which is nice. I was reading more typical fantasy authors and getting bored of them before some of the folks who play MMORPGs today were born, and I just got bored of it. My point is is that I don't think that I'm alone. Why is the Engineer ranking so high? The same reason the Mesmer will. It's something a bit different.
If it was some ho hum looking class im sure it wouldnt get as many votes as its getting.I think its getting its votes becuase it looks like a highly fun, highly versatile class.

Actually, every poll that was put up after something new that includes the new thing always has the new thing in the lead.
After Norn week every poll showed that Norn were everbody's favorite race.
After a profession reveal ever poll showed the new profession was in the lead.
Every poll shows that the newest thing always gets the most votes. It only evens out once its no longer new.

ehh, if the game was already out, everyone tried all the available classes, and the engineer was releasing in an expac,I'd prolly believe that.
I like the engineer the most because it is the only one different so far. Ranger second because I always like ranger type classes.

Dream Chaser, while I agree with a lot of what you say there (though I do get annoyed with the word clockpunk - do we really need a subgenre of a subgenre? How specific do we need to be?), the mesmer isn't raking in the votes. It has the second lowest votes, only to the elementalist, which, as you say, is not super popular as a result of being so standard. Warrior seems to be really lot for the same reason. It's be done, and over done. And then done again.
I do though really think the engineers popularity has to do with it being the newest. Statistics routinely show the newest thing is the most popular. I don't know why, I'm not a sociologist, but it has been proven true, so we should take that high percentage with a grain of salt as well. Maybe someone can do a poll in a few weeks, maybe after another big reveal, and we can see how the numbers play out there.
I am very excited by the steampunk technology. I've always loved steampunk technology, and the prevalence of it in the world is very interesting to me. I am sure the level of technology will annoy some, as I've seen in some comments on this forum, but really, they haven't moved forward nearly as fast as humanity did in the real world in that span of time, so I don't see what the big deal is.
I am interested in the direction they are taking the asura. From GW1 and from the novels, there is a distinct techno-magic feel to them, and if they are moving them away from that to not detract from the charr technology, I will be a bit dissapointed. Their blend of magic and technology to create incredible inventions is something I can't remember ever seeing in a game, and it was very refreshing. Focusing too much on their magic will take away from their obvious technological bent, and really change the feel of the whole race. The combination, the mashup of magic and tech is the thing that makes them so interesting.

Well...the engineer is by far the most popular right now. Probably due to a mix of it being the new kid on the block, and well it looks so different from the rest.
However, bear in mind is how will the different professions play. We're all basing our votes on "looks" for lack of a better word. What will truly define popularity is when we get our hands on the profs finally.
Elem and warrior might never get the most votes in these types of polls, but looking back at other mmos, mages and warriors get a lot of play. Traditionally those types of classes are straight to the point and don't require a ton of finese to play, they can be awesome in the hands of the mediocre and outstanding in the hands of a master.
The Engineer might look exceedingly cool, but for all we know the level of skill it will require to play one will be very high. Especially since many of their skills look like they would require some planning and forethought, like where to place a turret on the battlefield for maximum effect, and what type of grenades to toss to really help your team.
Regardless of all of this. I love the look of the engineer, and is by far my most favorite, closesly followed by the Thief. However, I plan on having one of everything at max level at some point. Because they all look fun and unique.
I have to admit the somewhat tech.savy engineer appeals to me, not to common for a phantasy game if I am right. Found it intriguing that so few had voted for the mesmer since a lot of players argue it to be indispensable to GW and its lore. Well maybe not after all? So maybe we will get a surprise in the end with a spell caster different from the mesmer. I will get my spirits and their master after all?!
Ill probably play a Guardian or a Engineer. Ive played Alchemic based classes in the past and it is great fun. I love how Eng can be a nice versatile support profession as well as an offensive one. Thing that gets me the most excited is that the class is very very flexible with many different doodads and trinkets
Guardian seems like great fun too. knowing my luck ill play everything to try em all out xD GW2 already seems like its going to suck away all my freetime like a void xD
I picked necro, but really, I like them all except for ranger, and that is only because I want to see more of what the pets can do before I judge them.
additionally, I have mixed feelings about the engineer, namely in their limited weapon selection. I know, I know, its not going to mean anything because of how the kits and backpack work...but its so different from what I am used to that I don't know how I feel about the engineer right now.
I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.
Elementalist: Well, my first MMO character was a High Elf mage in old old EverQuest...so nostalgia?
Engineer: Anything to make me feel like a brown coat.
Guardian: Played a Paladin for several years so I'd like to play a Paladin done right.
Mesmer: I just want to know what all the fuss is about. I didn't play one in GW (I didn't play GW that much because by then I was spoiled by non instanced zones in other games) so I might want to try one here.
Necromancer: I've a twisted soul. Played a Necro in old EQ.
Ranger: My current main is a hunter so may make for a smooth transition and an easy perspective of who does it better. Of course it will be arenanet.
Theif: I'll be honest...sex appeal. When I tried Rift I played a theif like class (assasin/bladedancer/riftstalker) and I love the idea of speeding around and poofing behind somone for some surprise buttse-....
Warrior: My first class in WoW was a warrior and they were terribly boring. Now, they are more interesting to play and I like the idea of seeing another version of the warrior.

This game doesnt have race limitations for class selection correct? Or do i have to be a norn/human/charr to roll a warrior?
Uhh... what?
Noap, no limitations. Which is why one of my characters is going to be a Charr Brainthief.
Engineer is what raised my interest in the game, was waiting for something mechanical, tinkery and tactical. Flavord with alchemy, couldn't be better. Second option is the mesmer or whatever.

Thief. I never seen a MMO class that mixes FPS and MMO that well before, it seems like the perfect blend of player skill and RPG.

Necromancer because I love having the dead and their spells as my allies.

picked ranger for now --- until I hear more about the last "unknown" profession
EQ2 fan sites
Elementalists fit my playstyle. I like the options that the attunements give me.
I picked necro, but really, I like them all except for ranger, and that is only because I want to see more of what the pets can do before I judge them.

Funny that the classes are ranked in almost the exact order they were released, excluding Mesmer.
"Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." -Dr. Seuss
Necromancer because I am an emo goth kid that liks playing with dead things.
Though after seeing the poll results and seeing as many people vote for Necro it makes me wanna switch up... I hate being something everybody else is.
On that note I will probably do Elementalist due to it's low poll score. But we'll see when the game comes out.
I'm really torn
I chose Thief because it looks cool and there are some original ideas to the class, but i really have no idea till I get to play them all.
Mesmer!!! I'm really excited to see the mesmer type profession...its something different not an average mmorpg profession :]
FAIL POLL! Where's the Commando option? ;D
