    why it will fail:

    - theme park / many linear maps I think there will be some element of this in the game and is the ONLY thing I agree on in this post. It will be theme park like but that may not be bad. The maps ARE going to be huge.

    - boring repetitive quests with LONGGGG voiceovers that nobody cares about and you want to skip over anyway. You know this how? Personally, I LOVE ME 1& 2, Dragon Age, etc dialogue quests with decisions that actually have an impact. I hope the stories are as entertaining as some of those from the games i mentioned. I think people will care about the dialogue because your decision will change the outcome for your character, irrevokably.

    - instancing / phasing There will be a little instancing on planets but they have stated repeatedly they are keeping it to a minimum and want most of the game inthe open world. Besides, if done right this can be a great tool to advance the story arc.

    - WoW clone, follows WoWs EXACT skill system and point progression and levels, as well as many other aspects of WoW. Really? So WOW has you pick a base class that branches into an advanced class? Heck, I mean, I have not played WOW in years but as I recall a Rogue is a Rogue throughout all levels. Crafting in WOW is done with the aid of companion characters? hmmm. Maybe this is unique to SWTOR, what do ya think? Multiplayer dialogue is in WOW? Really, or is that unique to SWTOR too. Looks less and less like WOW as I run through it and I have not even scratched the surface. uhm....space combat?!?!? Mobile player ships, companions you can take on party quests, fully voiced, the list of seperators go on and on.

    - bad graphics, also bad performance with bad graphics. (you cant play it on a crappy laptop) How do you know about performance? The game is not even speced out for min requirements yet.  bad graphics? Stylized, yes, but bad...that is a matter of personal taste. They seem to get better as time goes on and I personally like them. I am guessing the millions of clone wars tv show fans might like them too.

WAYYYYY offf base. Let me explain why I say that.  See above.

    Game Will Fail:

PHASING / INSTANCES: Game is full of phased scenarios, instanced rooms and caves (covered by a mysterious green forcefield which keeps others out), and physically cuts out your contact with other players. This makes the questing boring and solo.

QUESTING: I was hyped up about bioware doing "something different", boy  was i wrong. Quests are the same dumbed down "kill 12 bats and bring their wings back to me", except theres voiceovers, which tend to screw up and not work. Not once did i see anything interesting in a quest, and i did about 200 of them. Not to mention they were all incredibly easy to complete.

WOW CLONE / WOW IN SPACE: Game is exactly like World of Warcraft, Exactly. From the combat style to the skill trees. The skill trees are a progressive branch point system, looks EXACTLY like WoW, as if they copied and pasted the same layout. Also the questing, interaction, and even the exp display has been copied right from wow. This is literally WoW with space skins on it.

GRAPHICS / ANIMATIONS: The scenary in the world looks decent, not the best, not as good as everquest 2 from like 8 years ago, but decent. The players, armor and animations look absolutely horrific. My character looked like he put his face in a meat grinder. the  Running, slashing and shooting is all overexaggerated and looks terrible. Makes the game less fun to play.

LINEAR MAPS: The first 2-3 "maps" or "zones" you experience, you see large rolling mountian ranges and scenary as you (Fly in 300 feet over the trees on a land speeder (didnt know land speeders did that), which is exactly like the lionbat in WoW on a linear path), only to discover a small map with no options to explore. the zone is completely centered around paths and "theme park" style questing.

REPETITION: When you do finally make it in to a larger "instanced zone" in which you have to travel throughout a ship, or enemies lair, there is extreme repition. you kil the same 3 types of mobs (which are easy), over and over.... and over.... and over.... AND over again. until you get to a "boss" whom is slightly more difficult, but still easy. and then you do that over again.

It sounds to me like you just don't like themepark games. I suggest not working yourself up too much about a themepark MMO which is not even out yet.

Your WOW comments are still way off. SWTOR is EXACTLY like WOW is it, even combat? Uhm....WOW has an auto attack, SWTOR does not. See, one comment to prove the statement inacurate.

If you don't like the game that is fine, or if you don't like theme parks ,great but you talk in absolutes about the failure of this game as if you were kicked off the designe team.

The people shouting from the rooftops that SWTOR will fail are going to be proclaiming the accuracy of their productions regardless of the success of the game.

BioWare has stated that they need 500k subscribers to be profitable.  Ok, so the developer has given us the benchmark against which to measure their success.  They're not trying to dethrone WoW.  They're not trying to reshape the genre.

With the Star Wars and BioWare names alone, I can easily see 1-2 million box sales.  I think we're going to see a lot of first timers in the mmo genre, console players of KOTOR and Mass Effect.  Sure, not everyone is going to stick around, but that is completely expected both by the developers and anyone else who bothers to pay attention.  Box Sales will primarily go to recouping developement costs, and I think they'll do just fine at that.  Subs will pay for keeping the servers up and further expanding the game.

If you don't like Themepark games, you're probably not going to like this game.  I have a great suggestion:  Don't play it and stop wasting your time whining.  Go play Xyson or Darkfall or MO and ponder on what an amazing success those games have obviously been.

But it's hard to take you seriously because you aren't presenting a strong argument so much as your personal preference.

Every one of the things you had listed can easily be a "non - issue" with some players. Especially if they aren't jaded mmo gamers who are searching for their holy grail of games.

And especially if they are just huge star wars fans who just want to play a star wars game.

phasing/instances: some people love them so no go on that

questing: though I would prefer a more in depth questing that was more like a single player game, having seen a bit of that questing, I dont' mind getting 12 bat livers if there is a storied reason I need them. Having seen the game being played first hand it definitely works.

wow clone: well, again, as I've seen the game first hand, in no way did it feel like it was wow reskinned.

graphics/animations: for the most part personal taste. So no go on this

linear maps. I don't have any experience with this but from what I've heard some of the worlds are quite large and are not linear maps. And in any case, even though I prefer open worlds, this has never been a game breaker for the average person who doesn't want to get lost. Remember, you might just not be the core audience for this game. Maybe they are going for the average person who just wants to play star wars?

Your last point doesn't bother me as it smacks to me of being a bit ADD. It's ok if an area only has a few beings. It would be ridiculous if there were 20 differnet thigns in every area to combat. However, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on this one and will have to wait and see until I actually play the game for a long time.

Doubtful.  1.  It's Bioware.  2.  It's Star Wars.   3.  There's a buttload of money involved.   It doesn't take a crystal ball to figure out the game will be at the very least somewhat successful.

I'm sure that will disappoint a great many people though.  For years now, I've been reading these forums, and nothing seems to make a lot of posters here happier than when they're trashing a game -- any game.

  • RaventreeRaventree Member Posts: 456

They are making the game they said they were going to make, but they aren't making the game I want them to make, so I am going to close my eyes and hope and wish really hard that they fail.  Maybe I will stomp my feet and cross my arms for effect as well.  Please fail, please fail.

    /sarcasm off

Just because you seem to have something against a game that isn't even out yet, doesn't mean it is going to fail.  Like some others have said, the Bioware and Star Wars names alone guarantee it will be a huge success at least initially.  Also, as the biggest project of one of the most respected developers I really doubt that they will put out anything short of a great game.  It may have some launch bugs and there may be some balancing and tweaking that needs to be done, but it is highly doubtful they will put out shovelware.  They have said from the beginning that they are following the tried and true conventions of the MMO genre and not reinventing the wheel, so if you are expecting something more than a great MMO, then maybe you should stick with single player games.

Really, the only thing I can see causing a major problem is a horrible launch, Funcom style.  I suspect that MMO devs these days have learned from Funcom's pain though and will put a little more effort into a smooth launch.

So silly...every other week I see a post that either says, "will swtor be the best mmo ever" or will swtor be a total fail?"  Just blows me away that these topics keep coming up...reallly...the topics are fail.  Some will love the game, some will hate the game, some will say its good but not their cup of tea, etc.  It's Star Wars...so while they are playing it very safe, I can't see it failing.  Still a tard topic.

I agree completely.  It is just that the people who can't stand to wait are all excited and impatient and the haters are all fired up hoping it will crash and burn.  Either way it sure is taking a long time to get here, lol.

The only reason I'm not frustrated is because I want Nvidia to refresh their SLI Cards to the 580M in time for this and Skyrim. I refuse to get the Nvidia 560M SLI. Oh, no, TOR won't even come close to failing. Sorry!

If you mean fail as in lose money, I would highly doubt it. The game will be profitable for several years at least. I don't even know if I will like it personally but there is definitely enough there to make EA a profit. Hell- people are still playing WoW so the bar is not set very high.

To bad I can't go back in time and hack Blizzard mainframe and delete WoW.

We could have had SWG 2 but BW when't with the extremly easy Themepark mode were you just half asleep can level without any form of challenge.

Maby it will change in higher levels but what I have seen it's pretty much the same road from lvl 1 to max just like RIFT and other clones out there.

It's like buy a blue Porche drive for a few months, sell it and buy a red one and it feels so new and fresh till you notice hey i have driven this kind of car before.

     Correct.

We need to make a list of "prediction" questions with concrete numbers to get an idea of what they mean and then we can verify post launch if it is pass/fail.  Concrete numbers without ranges.

    Please add to the list:

Specific Number of boxes sold within the first three months of release below which the game is a failure:

Specific Number of subscription months* in the first 7 months (30 days from, so 6 months of sub) below which the game is a failure:

Specific Number of subscription months* in the first 13 months (30 days from, so 12 months of sub) below which the game is a failure:

*: subscription months the number of monthly sub payments made.

No. I'm sure it will be more popular than Rift, and will have more staying power.

Despite all the discussions about the direction of the game, and whether it will be a true MMO or not.. its still largely seen as being a single player RPG with the option of multiplayer content.. at least that appears to be how the majority of players will treat it.. i think the crunch time for  SW:TOR will be launch + 3 months.. if the game is to be deemed a success or failure.. it will be at this point. for me the game has definitely failed to impress.. so im not really all that optimistic.image
