It's going to be hard to narrow it down using your criteria for F2P without being a little more specific. I mean, some would consider it impossible to advanced past Ch 2 in Runes of Magic without spending money, while others might argue that LOTRO can be played entirely for free by griding TP through deeds.

I'm just going to look at games that I consider non-sibscription based and say that currently LOTRO is king, followed closely by AoC once it converts. I enjoyed my time in RoM a lot, but it just doesn't have the production value of the aforementioned titles. Allods is another title that I think could have topped the list if they just fixed the grind.

I am intrested in hearing about Free To Play games that launched Free To Play. Not fail Pay To Play games listed here. Paying for content will always be fail imo. I know Eden Eternal is pretty solid and the upcomming Rusy Hearts looks good.

Guild Wars was not a failed P2P. It was never P2P, and GW2 isn't launching as P2P either. By the same token, it's not F2P either, you have to buy the game and then you play free forever after that.

Anyway, I'm playing Eden Eternal and Dragon Nest, and enjoying both. Dragon Nest is only CB and that ends in a few days, but I'll have Eden Eternal to keep me preoccupied until Rusty Hearts CB, and then hopefully after that I'll have both Dragon Nest and EE to keep me busy until Rusty is OB.

I dont think a game where you have to pay for content deserves to be called a f2p game...

I am not talking about Guild Wars as it should not have even been on the list. Lord Of The Rings is nonthing but a WoW Clone that failed as a Pay To Play MMO. I beta tested the game and played the game for months when it was Pay To Play. If it was such a good game it would still be Pay To Play. There are more people playing Perfect World then Lord Of The Rings.

The fact that you even use the term "wow-clone" speaks volumes.

Regardless of your personal opinion torward LOTRO, it wasn't failing when it went F2P.  Even if it was, that doesn't change the fact that it's doing extremely well for Turbine at this point, has won numerous awards, and is generally very well respected amongst the MMO community.

It was their lifetime subscriptions that killed LOTRO.  There wasn't any point to keep the game going when over half their subscriber base was playing for free or at a constantly reducing rates ( depending how you look at it).  The main reason Turbine switched to the P2W payment model was to get money from lifetime subscribers and to hopefully mirror the success that DDO had but on a larger scale.

IMO, it is probably safe to say their decision failed.  Turbine hasn't made a peep about LOTRO, since it's initial conversion to P2W, and they are starting to ramp up their item mall with special items.

The game was failing when it was F2P. It started out good but afther a couple years people saw that WoW was still the better choice for these type of Theme Park MMOs. Servers started drying up and Turbine made the switch before the situaltion got bad and made public. Thats why most people think everything was just fine.

I never said Lord Of The Rings was not a good game but it was not good enough to make it as a Pay To Play  or it would still be Pay To Play.  Of all the games people say are WoW Clones Lord Of The Rings is the one game that truely deserves to be called just that. Its the same game just set in Middle Earth. Denail or just dont want to admit the truth?

The 2 Best F2P games that have stood the test of time are EUDemons and Conquer. They both have cash shop and you might feel like you HAVE to buy it to get anywhere, you really don't. Everything purchased with premium points can be purchased by any F2P Character. You can buy premium points in market from other players. Conquer's PVP/PK System is one of the most unique you can find, because you can do anything. Both games get steady updates and new game content. Although I play CrazyTao more than EUDemons because i like the Character movements better. But if your looking for a popular well maintaned game CrazyTao isnt for you, and its actually alittle difficult to market due to the low population. Hope this brings some people to the darkside of cash shop games. You can be as good as any paying member with hard work!!

I played so many FTP games too. For now the best is Eden Eternal. The music, ambience sound, the graphic, animation and combat really looks great. This game feel like a handheld nintendo games convert to an MMO. It is very addictive.

I found Runes of Magic to be far more of a WoW clone than Lord of the Rings Online, and I found neither one to my taste.  RoM is okay as f2p if you don't mind taking it slow, stay off the pvp server(s), and tell anyone who nags you about your gear to buy it for you or shut up.  LOTRO made me feel like I was in a kid's cartoon.  On rails.

Oh, and I find your tone and general attitude in this thread rude and uneccessarily confrontational.

And is it just me, or does this thread carry the lingering odor of guerrilla marketing?

Eden Eternal is a kids game & to dumbed down , things like you right click on a quest & it walks you to were you need to go . It might as well just play for you..

& just to clarify LOTRO  was not a fail  at the time of FTP it still had 200k +  ok yes 33k was Lifers  but it was doing fine  the reason they went ftp was DDO was such a huge money maker ..

How is paying $50 for Guild Wars content (the game) at the store any different than paying $50 for content at the in-game store of the other games?

Or am I really misinterpreting your comment?

What evidence do you have of LotRO failing when it was P2P only?

According to your statement companies like McDonald's, Coca Cola, Nike, etc. etc. were all failing companies because the money they were making in America wasn't good enough and they had to go international.  It's an incorrect argument.  Just because you go looking for new customers somewhere else doesn't mean you're failing where you're already at...it just means you know there is more out there and you want some of it.  Are you failing at your job just because you ask for a promotion or a raise?  No, it means you want more.

If an mmo company is making $1 million a month off of their current customers why should they not want to make $2 million by doubling their customers.  There is a limited number of mmo players willing to pay a monthly sub and most of those players are playing WoW.  All these other P2P mmo's are realizing that if they want more customers they have to go the players out there who are NOT already playing WoW and the largest group of those players to be found are free-players.

Sure, WoW may be the king of the P2P hill with 11.5 million players but that hill is merely a mole-hill compared to the 30+ million players some of these other f2p games have.  Farmville alone has over 80 million players and has made it's company, Zynga, richer than EA.  Granted, Zynga doesn't make reall mmo's, but the point is there are hundreds of millions of potention players out there who DON'T want to pay a monthly sub to a game but who may be willing to drop $5, $10, or even $100 for an occasional in-game purchase.  Any real mmo maker would have to be crazy not to want to spread to that market.

There's a reason why all these free-play companies have enough money to throw around that they've been able to buy out all these P2P companies like the APB guys, Cryptic, Fallen Earth, and Hellgate London.  Sure, those companies were failing on their own but the message is clear.  P2P is shrinking and Free-play is spreading.  Any current MMO company has to adapt on it's own to the new market (like Turbine, SOE, and Funcom have done) or slowly dwindle and get swallowed and forced to adapt by another company (as the APB, Crptic, and Fallen Earth guys have discovered).

I still play Rappelz and currently Forsaken World.  I don't care generally how fast I level.  If what I'm doing is fun, it doesn't matter.

Games aren't p2w if you don't care about "winning".

I can also roleplay the tower in a chess game and shout "is that a peasant at the horizon I see? I will smash it I will! Oh damn I broke one of my merlons!". -- maji
