How did Cryptic get this one, jeez. The Foundry is a poor excuse for a developmet tool (NWN from Bioware is the only Toolset that comes close and even that one needed to be more expansive (yes, I want to create new base classes and such without knowing your scripting language)). I bet there will be no player servers, only through Cryptic server base. I also bet you there will be limited content creation for players (will not be able to build my own world because I am only allowed x amount, blah, blah). I'm sticking with NWN from Bioware, the nivida update for 400 series and up cards is coming this summer. Not to mention them trying to nickel and dime us for making content. Sorry, don't be messing up my NWN, thats Taboo
I am not too optimistic with Cryptic developing this game. As long as they implement some very good user tools for generating content, and a fully fleshed out D&D system.... then I could care less about what type of content or story that Cryptic develops, as I am sure that users will generate some vastly superior content.
WAIT and see what this games is like as they have a TRACK RECORD of producing Shallow Buggy games.
? I didn't experience CO to be a buggy game, it was pretty smooth and polished, especially when compared with buggier launches.
CO was light in amount of content, but that which was in it was fun while it lasted.

I think MMORPG.com should clear this up, Neverwinter is "not" an MMORPG. It is an online story based co-op game, Cryptic has been very clear about this from the start.
You're right, of course. But then again, Vindictus, DDO and GW are also CORPG's, still they're listed here on the MMO list, and generally all these 3 are treated and regarded as MMORPG's on various MMO sites as well.
I agree and there is a good chance that despite Cryptic’s best efforts to have the game labeled as an OMG (lol, love that acronym), people will still call it an MMO. However I agree with Cryptic on this one, games like Neverwinter provide a different experience than what we’ve come to know as an MMO. As such they should have their own genre to help avoid comparisons and possibly some of the stigma that comes from being labeled an MMO.
All I asked was that a new source call the game what the developers have repeatedly called it in interviews or at least reference that they (the developers) don't call the game an MMO. I have no problems with it being talked about on MMO sites (actually I have an issue with Massively trying to avoid talking about it) just that some respect is given to the developer's wishes. I know that is normally too much to ask.
Note: I'm just speaking my mind here nothing I wrote above was directed at you MMO.Maverick as you made a good point.
Edit: Trying to clear out all the character returns the site added. 0.o

Sry for that rant, I just love NWN, they have a lot to live up too with this one. (Obsidian tried, they came close but the toolset was a complete chore)
It looks decent enough but as many posters above have pointed out it is Cryptic that is developing this and as we all know their MMOs sound fantastic until you actually play them and find out just how shallow they actually are. Also why is this suddenly being called a 'MMORPG' when Cryptic themselves catagorized it as a 'CORPG'? Not trying to nit-pick... just asking.
I think that the whole point of it. Back when the first Neverwinter came out I had a friend that made all kind of adventures for us to go on with the tools they provided. It was cumbersome for him to do them but he did it. He even would control some of the mobs and bosses during combat, Also he would pause and give dialog as we made our way through his content.
As a pen and paper roleplayer I found this cool to be at home and we could be ran through a session from out home. I only imagine the dev refined this out more making the job of the game master less cumbersome. Thats a good thing I feel. There are folks out there that use Rptools to roleplay from home. I just see this as more of a D&D focused RPtool.

2. cryptic better get it together and not simply hope an IP is going to save them.
only thing i could wish for was 3.5 ruleset, but oh well. maybe they can find a way to make character creation and development a bit more flexible than 4.0 did.

Create own dungeons and content and all is always nice but we are talking about Cryptic here, I bet we will only be able to use the basic template for making own content if you want more tools, textures, mobs, sounds ect it will all be in thier cash shop.
It's Cryptic , if you want to know exactly what the game will be like play Champions Online, that'll give you a great idea of what to expect. The game will be very linear and not much to it . The only part that will be of any value will be the player generated content and that'll be narrow scoped assest . This game was designed by Cryptic's own admission within a 24 mo window . To see the player generated content in action borrow someone's account , if you can, at STO. It sounds better then it is. Oh and less we forget , the C-Store will be a key element to the functioning and play of this game.
I wouldn't touch this game at any price.
Say what you want about Cryptic but here are some facts. Cryptic games possess the most detailed character creation imaginable. I have played user generated content in STO and while some missions have been sub par, many have been incredibly detailed and involved.
As an old school pen and paper D&D player I am excited about this game. UGC will raise this title above many of the other currently availible games.
Will it beat out SWTOR or GW2 not likely, but it will remain viable I believe.

Ding , ding , ding . We have a winner, he's gets it. You'll be doing it on their server people. I suspect to maintain those dungeons, on their servers there will be a fee. I'm betting as mentioned above the base material will be free , but you'll probably need to buy slots to maintain just about everything. Their tool set is rudimentary and clunky . This will not end well.
I'm not a big fan of Cryptic, but having user generated content is a big bonus if done like the original. I lost about 5 years of my life when the original was on AOL. User content > anything a dev can come up with.
this is aserious fluff article as the foundry is the weakest of the of all the toolsets realesed to date and is the next big step.
Also in order to get all the races and classes from the just the first players handbook expect to spend around $100, and take in mind tehres 3 more players handbooks with material in to charge you for.
Also no to hit rolls, no dieteis, no alignment settings, no making of linking campaigns or ever large scenarios for that matter.
As much as i loved NWN, i think its one of my best multiplayer rpg, mmos included, the editing tool must be now super outdated. Not only coding wise, but the overall concept is super outdated really.
You could probably acheive very similar results in an usual mmo if they built in the features to give some rp abilities to players. Having the players rebuild the game for the dev using their tools is not that efficient, sure you will always see some talented amateur coders making great job and giving nice world, that what was with NWN. But imo its such a dated way to do it.
You don't need the player to recode all their game or world and basically do the dev job almost from scratch. Anyone who used the NWN tool will confirm you that without some solid coding backgroud, you couldn't do anything good with it. It was really where was the biggest limitation of that all NWN system, and i personally think thats why it never went further.
So just give simple rp like features in your mmos, and really you don't need much, the ability to link some reward to some acheivement, hide some chest, make some treasure maps, have some easy to use spawners linked to the characters that will participate to the "player made event" , whatever of this kind could give the abilty to player to make their own content. You really don't need to do it NWN style, it was so heavy, clumsy, unefficient imo. You need to give easy to use items ingame any player could use without coding ingame, not outside, but ingame, for god sake, is that so hard... just enough for them to create their own event linked to the people they want in, some fluff items to create their own ambiance of rp; some comunity tools like player cities and stuff like that.
Keep the foundry for you guys, and make a good rp mmo, that would be better honestly, jez...
The way i see it Cryptic did make mistakes...But....They have made up for those mistakes in my book...Champions Online has come a LONG way since its launch and Im lovin it...I use to kick myself in the Arse for buying a Lifetime Sub...But now Im glad i did...Lovin the game and the player base...They are always there if you need help...Which is more than I can say for some Big MMO's out there *Cough*WOW*cough*...So personally Im not gonna punish Cryptic for past mistakes...If I did i might possibly miss the best experience ive had playing an MMO...Like the Ultima Online Pre Trammel period...
Boy, people do have short memories. I played Neverwinter Nights 2. Virtually *anything* Cryptic comes up with will be an improvement over that game. And Neverwinter Nights 1 was even worse than NW2, imo.
There are four games in the pipeline I am looking forward to playing: SWTOR, GW2, TSW, and Neverwinter. These are all very different types of games, granted, but I think in some ways I am looking forward to Neverwinter the most. It sounds, of all of these games, like the truest successor to GW1 in terms of game structure (i.e., it's a heavily instanced CORPG with Heroes, just like GW1), and GW1 is one of the most enjoyable online games I've ever played.
The ability for players to create content, the D&D/Neverwinter IP, the CORPG structure, the instancing. Damn. Neverwinter sounds just about perfect. Yeah, it's Cryptic, I know, and depth/story are not their strong suit. But, still, Neverwinter sounds like a lot of fun to me. I am looking forward to it.

Not caring if it is a mmorpg or not. I hope they don't mess this up. We'll see how it goes.

Looks good. Tone down the vivid colors and keep the monsterdesign by the book, then you have spot on!

If it's not broken, you are not innovating.
Custom Idea: Sounds great
D&D Basis: Sound for a game of this type
Cryptic at the helm: Based upon the outcomes of their previous projects e.g. Star Trek Online; I am worried.

I'm leary but I'll give it shot just because I love Neverwinter. Cryptic better not eff this one up, although we all know they will lol.
