The question that needs to be answered by the people that are about to go and walk in front of a bus over this is, Does SWG and the small amount of people playing it, do the IP justice anymore? My personal answer would be, It never did at any point in it's whole lifespan. I have a real good feeling LA's didn't think so as well.
As much as I liked it it pre Cu, you are probably correct. It was realeased too early and had SO many bugs. My constant complaint during pre CU was the constant push of content and ignoring bugs that needed to be fixed. Even now the game seems like a buggy version of WoW with a Star Wars skin. I think the shutdown has more to do with locust arts wanting to pull the plug as it just seems to make sense for LA with TOR just around the corner, it doesnt seem logical to me that $oe would drop SWG but then again $OE is far from logical..
My question is where is Badger in all this, hes the guy who like to post all the charts showing populations and stuff, and sits in on the council and what not.
I have yet to see him post anything since this announcement. I have to wonder what happened to Mr die hard badger.
I'd like to know the same...I found his relentless and obvious bias to be less than entertaining over the past year or so...I found it even less amusing that I was warned on one occasion for calling him out on his...well...I'll be nice and call it his positive attitude towards this Game which was SO clearly on it's last leg...My guess is he's taken to the streets to convince anyone he can that the whole shut-down thing never happened and we're all just imagining the whole thing...Populations are up and everyone he speaks to LOVES the Game and the direction it's going...
Yep it is definately about money, but not lack of money. They would not start charging £8.99 instead of £9.49 for it.
50p per account is not enough to encorage the majority of people to sub if they don't feel like it
Although in my case I will be able to sub 21 acounts for the price of 20!
You are truly one of those people in life that I just can not understand. I have read your posts and tried really hard to see your point of view. I must admit I just can't do it.
No matter what anyone says you are just stuck in this state of mind. You seem to understand the situation but you just can not or will not accept it.
Maybe the question shouldnt be why they are shutting down SWG but why it bothers you so much. It is just a game. I have played and still do play SWG. While I wasn't thrilled about it getting axed I completely understand and accept it. The game has NEVER lived up to it's IP. It has always been a flawed and buggy game but I have managed to enjoy it. It seems so futile and sad that there are petitions and people like you trying to stop it.
I guess the biggest part of all of this that confuses me is why people like you think you are owed something. What gives you the right to tell SOE or LA what they should do with their under achieving game. Just because you want something does not mean that it should happen.

From a business perspective it makes no sense to go and close a MMO when it is on a high, and then give so much notice which is obvious most people will not resub to to a dying game (that is actually dying on Dec 15th), and not get back near as much revenue to cover the cost of the license they paid for SWG a few months back, but it makes sense to close it now from everyone here as it has been expected for some time? And that SOE gave the 6 months as a gift? LOL Thats the weird part
You just don't accept the fact that SWG was pulled because of TOR
MMOs are not just a game, but a social conduit When they are shutting down MMOs, it is like someone deleting all your console saves and disbanding your friends you have built up. One day this situation will happen with TOR too, but it does not seem much of a socially orientated game as SWG, so when it closes it won't be so bad, but seriously the game was not feeling dead when playing it, so when the annoucement came it was quite a shocker.
Playing the Matrix just before it closed it felt dead, and was not a shocker.

I like playing KOTOR to this day, or even Shadows of the Empire on N64, but travelling around Tattoine and visiting Jabbas Palace ans stuff, is no longer possible from Dec 15th. Even if there is no game to play in it, it is just breathtaking just being able to explore the worlds, by foot or vehicle. Guess I will have to play the old games to experience these places again. Phatom Menace has Mos Espa...
Everquest was the 1st MMO I heard of and that is still going. If MMOs can get closed down this easily, then MMOs are becoming a waste of time/money.
My nephew and niece are well into Star Wars, and they would have loved this, but now will not be able to experience the wonder. They are a bit young atm to appreciate it.

Pre-CU was more in tune with the IP than SWTOR will be. It was a living breathing world (galaxy?) because the players roles could be so diverse. No matter how much diversity BioWare put into gear and visual aspects of the avatars the simple fact is that 75% of the players you will see will be some form of force user. You never knew what the hell anyone was in SWG unless they told you.
In some regards BioWare have fallen into the same trap SOE stumbled into. No one wants to be a moisture farmer? right? Actually, if you think back, some of the more famous players were crafters, full time crafters as well.

It's a waste of time to petition to save this game . This is the main reason :
the game’s license from LucasArts expires at the end of 2011, and LucasArts was a party to the decision to shut Galaxies down. That implies that they have no interest in renewing the licensing for Galaxies. In short, these players don’t have a leg to stand on.

Some advice toward the recent player base that was once givin to the vets pre Smeds Nazi grotesque event, "Get over it and move on." Thank you for the laugh about the petition though that was quite amusing.
I don't think I am owed anything, just think the timing of all this stinks.
It would have sucked for you no matter when they did it. I believe it was done now instead of later to avoid an ugly PR nightmare with the TCG. I am pretty sure the TCG has been making more money than the subs. Some people were spending tons of cash on those cards. Imagine how pissed they would have been if they were told it was closing in 2 months after buying a box for 100 bucks. People would have been screaming for refunds. Just like with the NGE and the Trials expansion. There would have been no way for them to just close the TCG now without people knowing something was going down.

I believe I just explained it. Yes the game was going to close because they have another MMO coming out. It is better for LA to distance themselves from SWG now rather than later. I would bet that it was LA that told SOE they would not renew the license. I would too. Bioware has a great rep and SOE does not. They want people to believe that TOR is a quality game (and it may be) and SWG did not have that reputation. Creating distance from SWG was the best thing that LA could do.
You just don't accept the fact that SWG was pulled because of TOR
No..I just don't care. MMO's close down. Nothing lasts forever.
MMOs are not just a game, but a social conduit When they are shutting down MMOs, it is like someone deleting all your console saves and disbanding your friends you have built up. It was not a huge suprise to me or a lot of people. It was bound to happen. You can easily keep in touch with your friends in other games or through many other means. SWG is not the only way to talk to people. One day this situation will happen to all MMO's not just TOR.
Playing the Matrix just before it closed it felt dead, and was not a shocker.
Also TOR is being released at the same time as SWG goes down, and gives off the impression that they are forcing SWTOR down our throats.
This is the part where you are wrong. They are not doing it to force you to play TOR. Do you really believe this was some plan to get the few SWG players to play TOR? If no one from SWG ever plays TOR LA and BW will never notice. There just is not enough people in that game to make a difference. You are seriously fooling yourself if you think either LA or BW gives a crap about a handful of SWG players.
It is just another hurt SWG player. Yes people are upset but what none of them and you seem to understand is that it really did have to be done. The industry does not see SWG the same way as you do. It has been the "what not to do to your mmorpg" poster child for many years. The game that had so much potential..etc etc. If I was in charge of LA I would have done the same. I would have milked the SWG community (as small as it is) until I was close to launching TOR and then to distance myself I would can it months before TOR was set to launch. This way all the whining and petitions will pretty much be forgetten by the time TOR hits shelves.
I like playing KOTOR to this day, or even Shadows of the Empire on N64, but travelling around Tattoine and visiting Jabbas Palace ans stuff, is no longer possible from Dec 15th. I do believe TOR has tattoine. So there you go.
Everquest was the 1st MMO I heard of and that is still going. If MMOs can get closed down this easily, then MMOs are becoming a waste of time.
EQ is owned by SOE. It is so old that for SOE it has been nothing but profit for years. No IP to pay for. MMO's have always been a waste of time. Nothing is real so you never really achieve anything. You do not own anything in the game. It is supposed to give you enjoyment and that is all. If you have put that much of yourself in to the game that you believe any of it matters than you have no one to blame but yourself.
My nephew and niece are well into Star Wars, and they would have loved this, but now will not be able to experience the wonder. They are a bit young atm to appreciate it.
and they will porbably love TOR when they get a bit older.
You can't reason with these people because they think SWG had a healthy population. They forget that SOE gave away 45 days for free, so of course servers seemed more populated. They just opened up free transfers because of population issues, but I guess to some that means a healthy game.
I am not basing my arguments on those 2 assumptions at all
It is just stupid to begin to close game now on account of populations, for 6 months notice, when 2-3 months would have been ample
If it was down to populations, and were doing it now regardless of the 45 days "populatuion boom", then it would be closing in Sept instead.
The 6 months notice is more of a curse than a gift,. There are hardly anybody in game and as far as SOE goes, they are losing money from people seeing no point in paying. Not usually SWGs style. Even when they closed the servers back on Oct 15th they only gave one months notice, when was expecting about 3.
Even I, with this notice I may not sub all the usual accounts now as I would have done, Ill just sub my main few, and save the money for the last hoorah on Sept 15th where I can get as many as I can on.
No matter which way you try to spin it, you are wrong
Do you really think things would be any different if SOE/LucasArts decided to close the game in 2 months instead of 6? Would people suddenly stick around? Would this not be some devious plot to kill SWG to boost SWTOR?
I can only imagine if the game was closing in 2 months people would be crying about how unfair it is to close the game so quickly and begging for a few more months.

This. There was someone on the o-boards claiming that the server transfers/shutdowns were due to population imbalances, as opposed to low populations (wtf????). The level of denial and delusion over there is quite high.
So I started to walk into the water. I won't lie to you boys...I was terrified. But I pressed on, and as I made my way past the breakers, a strange calm came over me. I don't know if it was divine intervention or the kinship of all living things, but I tell you, Jerry, at that moment ... I was a marine biologist.

It's like megaservers in DCUO. How can you possibly think it's nothing more than closing servers because the population is so bad you have to merge servers. SOE could say thier shit tasted like kit-kats and these same people would buy it with station cash.

EverQuest has a ton more subscribers than SWG has, that is why it is still running. I'd be willing to bet EQ has more subs than any of SOE's other pay to play games. There was an interview with the Smed about a year ago that mentioned EQ had more subs than EQ2 at the time.
The whole "EQ is older and they aren't closing it down, so SOE must not have wanted to shut down SWG!" idea is just flat out wrong. EQ still has enough subs to continue to exist, that is the reason it is not closing. The Smed was the only person involved with SWG at the time TOR was announced that mentioned sunsetting SWG.
Given the constant negative PR surrounding SWG, the failure of DCUO (not relating the two), and the fact that SOE isn't in the best financial shape (given they had to fire a third of their employees), it makes a ton of sense that SOE wanted to drop a game that would have very likely taken enough of a subscription hit from another game's release, one using the same IP, that would cause the already struggling game into losing money. By shutting down SWG, they free up the two or three people still working on it part time to work on DCUO full time. Hell, isn't the cutrrent SWG producer the guy who oversees the compiling of the game code for DCUO and SWG? That right there should tell everyone how important SWG is to SOE.
I still think SOE could make a quick cash grab with SWG by auctioning off the right to be the one to shut off the servers for the final time. I'd bet a lot of former SOE customers, who would otherwise not be inclined to give SOE a dime, would be willing to bid on it.

That is wrong, EQ only has one server, and did not even make it on the list for MMO of 2010. SWG is/was SOEs #1 MMO
People came back the 45 dayys, realised how awesome it was, and were going to stay this time. There were very few people posting against SWG this time on the free time, and more people saying there were going to stay.
Then SOE announced the game closure, and now they are not

Came back for my 45 days, realized the game was still crap. It's broken, why can't you people see that? When the majority of us left, we tried to warn SOE that they were making a mistake. After the NGE, the game took a nosedive. Since then, the game has been in the fastest downward spiral I've seen in a game.
When you're talking about the people saying they were going to stay, how many are we talking? Compared to the 200,000 that left basically due to the NGE, is that number saying they were going to stay and fight significant?

I'd bid a dollar if I get to be the one that turns off the lights when they FINALLY close up shop
I always said I'd never give SOE another dime, but I guess that'd be money well spent lol

Lucas Art has the rights I do believe and this is why I think in part is shutting dn, SOE just screwed it up!!

You're not really trying to use an unscientific poll to claim SWG has more subs than any of SOE's other games, are you? None of the other SOE official forums had threads pointing to the poll in the hopes it would increase the chances of there actually being other players to play the game with. There were several threads on the SWG official forums that did just that, with the reasoning explicitly stated.

Other people feel shafted too:
No not really. What LA has basically said is, "If you're a Star Wars fan, you'll be excited and happy to play whatever we put out." That is where they seem to have missed out big time on what's going on. Just because you slap a lightsaber in a characters hand doesn't mean that every SW fan is going to jump all over it. Personally I enjoyed the hell out of the KOTOR games and the original Tales of the Jedi comics but SWTOR holds zero interest for me. They've gone out of their way to make it different enough from the TotJ series and the previous KOTOR games that it just flat out doesn't do it for me. Now you give me a game set in the GCW era like SWG or even in the Rise of the Empire era and I'd be very interested in playing those. Even a NJO or Legacy era setting could attract me.
Bottom line is the message from LA is pretty clear. "You fools will play whatever we churn out so long as there is someone in the game holding a lightsaber." Frankly, I have a feeling they're going to find out pretty quickly just how wrong they were by assuming that.
I like playing KOTOR to this day, or even Shadows of the Empire on N64, but travelling around Tattoine and visiting Jabbas Palace ans stuff, is no longer possible from Dec 15th. If you have the extra few million dollars to lay out for them to renew it then go for it.
Would be better idea to try & Get SWG open Source & have someone run there own Server ..
/not signed. Time to let this game die.

Star Trek Online - Best Free MMORPG of 2012
People came back the 45 dayys, realised how awesome it was, and were going to stay this time. There were very few people posting against SWG this time on the free time, and more people saying there were going to stay.
Then SOE announced the game closure, and now they are not
Star Trek Online - Best Free MMORPG of 2012
Came back for my 45 days, realized the game was still crap.
EQ has 14 servers:

You're not really trying to use an unscientific poll to claim SWG has more subs than any of SOE's other games, are you? None of the other SOE official forums had threads pointing to the poll in the hopes it would increase the chances of there actually being other players to play the game with. There were several threads on the SWG official forums that did just that, with the reasoning explicitly stated.
