Pushed out by the community- Goodbye Azeroth

AstralglideAstralglide Member UncommonPosts: 686

I have been playing WoW off and on since Vanilla and have been an ardent defender of the game on these very forums. I was mostly a raider who did a little PvP and I will admit that I am a little bit of a troll (its hard to ignore stupid sometimes). The community in WoW has always been a little rough around the edges but, overall people were generally nice and helpful. Then, the devs released the dungeon finder. The dungeon finder, originally, was okay. You could kick people all you wanted. Yes, there was some abuse of the system and people complained- so the devs decided to make it almost impossible to kick someone out of a groupl if you were playing with friends. That, couple with the DF not matching people that were on the same servers until recently, created an environment where people were forced to play with nasty, mean, foul-mouthed fails who refused to play the game well with others. It got to the point that I could not even get through a boss-fight  in random dungeon in under 30 mintues because of all the fail, ass-hattery, and dropping/ waiting that went on. People refuse to target the tanks target, they refuse to get out of AOE, and they love to scream at each other the whole time instead of dropping the boss. It. is. not. fun.

Then there's trade and general chat. You can't ask questions in trade or general chat anymore or use trade to find raids, groups, or trade goods/services because of all the "Anal [Random Ability]" spam, ridiculous amount of trolling, or discussions of various deities expelling bodily fluids in various orrifices of various animals and parental/religious/political figures. If they are not discussing those things, then they are screaming vulgar racial epiphets. If I had a child under the age of 16, he/she would NOT be allowed to play WoW.

I believe what has happened is that  Blizzard/ Activision believes that enforcing their EULA and keeping public channels free of such talk would cause them to lose more subs than people who are tired of seeing it. I have decided to vote with my dollar and unsub. I am currently playing EVE Online and waiting on SWTOR. I hope to see all of the people who are tired of the filth that has become WoW there too.

With almost 12 million subscribers is really dificult to enforce any EULA, im sure they dont even have enought GM's for all the servers.

If you think it's different in other MMOs, you haven't spent enough time in other MMOs.

Actually, I have and it is. LOTRO, EVE Online, Ryzom, DDO, EQ2, Anarchy MF Online, Fallen Earth, did not have anywhere near the horrid community that WoW has and those games moderate their public chat channels- or is that what your iPad told you?

I generally praise WoW for having done many things right over the course of its history.  I've had some of my absolutely favorite MMO experiences in WoW and have formed some of my best on-line friendships through WoW.  However, I agree with pretty much everything the OP says.  Trade chat has been horrifying for as long as I can remember.  I've played the game on and off for years as well for a variety of reasons, and every time I return it's shocking to experience trade chat for the first time.  After existing in normal, civil reality for a period of time, suddenly having that ignorant garbage spewed at me is like a giant slap to the face.  As someone with a degree in Sociology, every moral fiber in my body becomes horribly offended.  The scary part though is how quickly I become desensitized to trade chat every time I return.  Within a week, I no longer cringe at every word.  When an environment filled with ignorant, hateful, racist, sexist comments no longer offend you, you should probably remove yourself from that environment for a while.  For WoW, that pretty much means removing yourself permanently.

And yeah, the Dungeon Finder... Been there, talked about that before.

Can you elaborate on this? I am a fanboy because i hate to see the trade channel filled with everything else except trade info?

And btw, i quited WoW 2 months ago. And by "quited" i mean the real thing. Deleted my toons, gave away my gold and valuable BoE items and cancelled my account.

I remember people talking about WoW's toxic community way back in 2004.  The dungeon finder had nothing to do with it.

I do too, but I didn't understand what people were talking about.  My experiences were always great until the dungeon finder.  I don't really blame that feature, but that was the timeline that I started to notice just how selfish and rude players were in the game.  I noticed it on forums, in game...it's poisoned the game for me too and I absolutely refuse to join a guild or do pickup groups now.  My only way to play the game is to try and gather up real life friends to play with.  Unfortunately, there are only 4 others besides me, and one of them has been corrupted as well!!

    The elitism plague is spreading.

I'm going to add MY 2 cents to this conversation because I too have played many MMOs besides WoW and have NEVER.....yes, you read that right.....NEVER run into a community as vile.  Now perhaps that varies (to some degree) by server, BUT, over all the worst community behavior is found in WoW and I'm not sure with NA servers that varies by much at all. In particular, EVE, EQ2, LotRO....all have stellar communities in comparision, and that is naming only a FEW games.

    So to the OP.....congratulations!

EDIT: I forgot to add Fallen Earth to the good community games I've played. Fantastic bunch that. People who assume all MMOs have shit communities like WoW....have perhaps been playing tooo many free to play MMOs or  maybe not enough MMOs at all whether free or paid. They are NOT all like WoW.

Ahahahaha, wow I think you should just quit MMOs because you obviously have no clue about them. The EVE community, besides most people now starting out are some of the most helpful in MMOs today. WoW's community is worse then every other MMO combined, everyone knows that, its common sense now.

They do, but it`s rare, since it depends on so many factors.  I know that it DOES occasionally happen since one of our Officers recieved a 72 hour 'break' from the game for getting involved in a trade chat argument that ended with more than a few expletives on all sides (admittedly, he also admitted that this was his third 'warning' for language.

I blame the parents that allow their immature children to play a mature game.  Now keep in mind, I am not classifying ALL of the rugrats as immature, just the ones that cause the problems and can't let others enjoy the game.  Blocking/Ignoring is great, but I always run outta spots.

In my opinion, start banning, after the 1st ban, require $2 extra per month as continued punishment.  Bring some relief to the strain these servers have had for years.  I don't think the game will make 10 years, well atleast not anywhere near the capacity it is at right now.  Just my opinion :)

    Looking forward to: Camelot Unchained
    Playing: None
Played: DAOC, WAR, FFXIV, WOW, Vanguard, GW, GW2, LORTO,

    1. Derogatory or mocking in an indirect way: "snide remarks".

I think that Barkopolo's problem is that he doesn't like people making negative comments about things that he likes, (iPads and WoW, for starters). He is either also a giant hypocrite or doesn't understand the meaning of the words that he uses. Either way, everybody seems to agree that there is a toxic nature in WoW's community and that it does eclipse the bad behaviour of other communities. I have provided examples of the behaviour that I find unacceptable in an online community, can you provide examples stating otherwise? Remeber, people blow up your ship, pod-killing you, and taking your stuff in EVE is not against the EULA- that's how that game is played.

Barko I agree..... The one difference is that with a larger playerbase the idiots will congregate , but it only takes one to ruin the fun. That is why I generally turn off global chat unless I want to laugh ...... At the rant merchants.

Turn of the chat channels.  I'd rather be ignorant than have to put up with the trash that fills their channels.

I know it's a bandaid solution to a hole in an artery, but maybe it'll help a little.  Short of Blizzard employing moderators (hah), I highly doubt there will ever be any change.  They'd lose too much money by actually banning repeat offenders.
