[If you are just dying to try an MMO, my review can not help you, if you are like myself and TIRED of all these "face planting" games... RIFT is not ready for you, it is not finished, it does not have the content your heart, and minde desire, and it will as with any MMO "walk you along" and milk you giving you hopes of a better game. Again, imo it is not ready for those of us who want a "deep" gameplay experience, it is VERY similar to WoW in many ways, and very different in others]
I liked RIFT, Im not bashing RIFT, I still think RIFT can be a decent game.... That said.
I played since release.
I was/am a T3 Geared Warrior from GP - GSB - ROS
I left after 1.3
I was part of a great guild, decent community, decent ques for random pve dungeons or pvp warfronts.
Why did I leave?
In all 100% honesty, lack of content. There just isn't enough to do in the game to keep me interested, while yes the game may keep many interested and many will of course take personal offense and argue this posting. I left purely based on lack of content.
RAID - content after awhile get's very stale, as there are only 3 "Active" Raid areas. The Raids themselves have their fun moments so on, but ultimately the End Game is just not fun, it's baely rewarding on a "personal" level.
DUNGEONS - After you've done them 10 times, 20 times, 50 times each you just can't take it anymore... They are boring.
World PVE - Linear, boring...
I feel its not just RIFT that suffers from this but many MMO's.
After awhile, a short time at that the games become stale, the content becomes generic and prediclable.
In all sadness to say this, I actually have had more fun playing f2p VINDICTUS than many mmo's to date... and I absolutely am generally disgusted by f2p games....
My only hope for this game and future MMO's... Not so much generic, linear content.
Comments
Absolutely right, imho. Which is what many are sick & tired of same 'ol linear grind and repeated content; 2-hours required for raids ad nauseum as the only outlet for better gear, and repeated lobby-system shoe-box instances for entertainment at $15/month.
I enjoyed the journey, and anyone that can get a box deal fpr Rift should give it a try, but it was the same journey I've made several times before over the last several years, and end-game is fairly shallow and redundant. Hopefully the genre will grow beyond this attention deficit disorder in my lifetime.
Fully T3 Geared.
Prestige Rank 6.
Have cleared all existing endgame content.
Two 300 tradeskills.
I still play daily though, because the game is a quality product. You`re burnt out on MMORPGs and you need to face that reality instead of trying to pass the buck by claiming that the issue is the game - when it is actually you.
There's a difference between being burnt out on elementary redundancy and Massively-Multiplayer Online Gaming; I dont think the op is burnt out on Massively-Multiplayer Online Gaming.
Couldn't agree more but I saw this coming and left after the first month.
You're not doing the game or community any favors by trying to mitigate his experience down to 'you're burned out on MMOs'.
This flies on the official forums but not in a third party site.
You are following the same pattern as Warhammer players who kept ripping people saying they were playing WAR 'wrong' and they were 'burned out'. RIFT is a okay game but seriously.. it's not 'THE' game for many people who find it average in every way from gear, character models, weapon looks, PvP and overall content.
OP didn't say the game stinks, so you should be less defensive. Dungeon running almost a hundred times in the same dungeons (reg then expert) only three months after a game has launched isn't most gamers idea of something they want to pay for.
"TO MICHAEL!"
For him, the game doesn't have enough content or things to keep him entertained, I mean they had him, so what happened? Was he burnt before he started playing? Or did the game do it?
That being said, most of us know its an issue at the basic game design level, for Rift. It is a quality product, it is worth playing, but it has the once you've done it all, or close to it all, you lose drive issue.
Or maybe he is wrong, and you love to run t1s!
I think the reality for many is starting to sink in that Rift and Aion are both basically WoW with prettier graphics and that the endgame of Rift is effectively the same as the WoW endgame.
You grind dungeons. After 50 times, no matter how awesome the dungeon is, as long as it's linear, it will get boring. (ala WoW). One of my favorite WoW dungeons was from BC, was a 5 man, and the main reason why I liked it was because it had a unique mechanic during the second encounter that made each fight with that boss different based on your party makeup. It didn't often get boring because of how the encounter's actions changed each time you did it. (For the curious, I'm referring to Blackheart the Inciter from Shadow Labyrinth). I had raided every single raid from original Molten Core, through prenerf Sunwell, and then Heroic Icecrown Citadel, and I still had fond memories of Blackheart fights, as each one was unique)
There's nothing wrong with WoWclones like Rift or Aion. In fact, had WoW not have been released, any of the two could have easily been 'the game' that created the modern industry like WoW did in '04. They aren't bad games, but their gameplay (although not their graphics) are all things we've seen before. Do dungeons to get gear until you get good enough gear to do raids for even better gear until you get good enough gear to do raids for the next tier, until the next content patch is released.
I think the OP is suffering from burnout, but I think the playerbase as a whole is suffering from burnout too.
Currently Watching: TSW. << Very Eager for a Beta invite. Have experience with Beta Testing.
Not personally a big fan of raiding or current pve endgame mmo philosophy. Nothing wrong with it, I just sort of burnt out on it.
Hardcore raider in wow from Launch to.. about 7 months ago.
Currently Playing: Champions Online.
I experienced pretty much the same thing as you. Played a Chloromancer mage, had cleared all the raid content. Was literally nothing for me to do to advance my character outside of grinding raid gear, and while I enjoyed playing, I simply had to give it up due to lack of content.
The problem is that themepark mmos are dependent on devs handing out more content to keep up with demand, with no sandbox to allow players to generate their own content; the worlds feel limited and repetitive.
Even with a game like RIFT, which I agree is a good game, there's just nothing to hold you, I've just quit after playing since beta, for Gods and Heroes, but I have no doubt that will only last me 2 months.
Agree with OP 100%. The real problems for me are 2-fold
1. Leveling was WAY TOO SHORT. The world was fabulous looking and the questing fun ( with the invasions even more fun etc ). In addition, while leveling you certainly have great flexibility in combining souls and being creative.
2. Recycled content is not real content - Expert dungeons are the same dungeons everyone did while leveling, with a bit more length ( in some ) and new bosses added here and there..
This points to the OP's main point.. yet again lack of content... It was funny hearing trion say early "we don't need slow leveling, we have plenty of end game content". - this is funny to me because the end game was just the leveling dungeon game revisited..
Will probably return if/when an expansion hits. If not, probably not.
I'm now in the same boat. Rift just doesn't offer enough to stay fun for longer than about 3 months - so Im going to let my sub expire in a couple of weeks.
I like the class systems - but in the end all it really does is let you do is switch between what would be 2-3 Wow classes, fun but not fun enough to make up for the boring gear grind and lack of pvp depth. I was a big rift fan at first but I think my judgment has been clouded by the horrific MMO launches of 2010.
In the end it was fun for three months - which is more than I can say for CO, STO, CATA, APB....
I read these posts and without intending offense, my recurrent thought is you all need to get a life. What I mean is that I ask who has the time to do all this content? Who actually wants to play ANY game THAT much?
*shrug* I'm sure there are some good answers. Kids have this much time on their hands.
BUT really, I'm amazed you can last as long as some of you do. If I played Rift every day, regardless of how far I had gotten, I would be completely fed up by now and would puke on hearing the introduction music.
So you do not play MMORPG's? The reason I am asking is because of the high lighted part "you cannot stand them it seems". I played RIFT for two months off and on and still hit max level, pvp rank three, wining many world pvp fights as a Assassin, while taking care of my three month old girl and then left with great memories of me playing a very polish fun game. So I have a life and I am sure the posters here have a life as well, if they did not, they would not be posting.
Was gonna reply something like Strap did, but since he already did I'll simply agree with him. You guys need to get a life if you feel these games lack content.

"TO MICHAEL!"
Actually I am ABD finishing up collecting data for my doctorate. I have a wife and a kid and love to go out hiking and to the pub with my mates. I'm also finsihing up 2 more publications and all the fun that goes into dealing with journal editors. Yet still in the few hours a day I had for Rift 2.5 months really was enough. It was a small world witha heavy lobby system and recycled dungeons. I had a great time in the 2.5 months I was there. I rolled on an RP server and found some nice folks to RP with while getting halfway through greenscale. Then the lack of open space got to me as well as, albeit to a lesser extent, the usual complete lack of any sort of RP enforcement model Trion imposed even on names. The world was a pleaure to explore, and I loved the ideas of the puzzles (though longed for an age where you had to ask folks in the community about these things rather being able to look everything up) there just wasn't enough of it. I plan to give the game another run in year or so and ceers to everyone who is having fun in Rift!
Of course I play MMORPGs. I play Rift. And I really am having a brilliant time.
My POINT is, setting aside my first ever MMO, if I play *any* MMO intensively for a few weeks I am fed up and bored regardless of whether I have "finished" with the content or not.
Wow, high horse much?
Just who do you think you are to be telling anybody how they need to be playing a game?
I thought that's one of the beauties of MMORPGs and other relatable online games. People play them differently! They come together and a dynamic community is made with all kinds of gamers.
threads like this make me laugh out loud. I feel no pity for people who are "burned out" on rift or any game when i know 99% or more of them skip 75%+ of the real in game content anyway. They dont dwelve into the story lines, they rush to level.....they barely read quests, cept to see where to go or what to kill..........They dont really care about faction or reputations, they greedily gather thier gear as fast as they can < usually at the expense of others time > then sit back and complain there is nothing for them to do!..... HA i laugh out loud!
Maybe you people should give up online gaming period, its obviously not ever going to satisfy you anyway!.......I Hope you find what ever it is you are looking for but i assure you gaming hasnt, isnt now, nor never will fill the gaps you all complain are leaving you with nothing to do with your time and get bored in mmorpg's.
Yeah I completely agree. I quit playing Rift for the exact same reason I quit DAOC, Shadowbane, pre-NGE SWG, Wow, LOTRO, COH/COV, and WAR. Some lasted longer than others but it boils down to the fact that after awhile you run out of things to do that aren't boring and repetitive. Its the curse of MMOs and video games in general. Players are able to chew through content at a far faster pace than MMO studios can create it.
"Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, we were called by the Admin of the site . . . "
@ Krondin
That was a very stupid post. I LOLed too. I don't read the garbage stories made up to legitimize collecting 10 mushrooms or pelts or shiny rocks because it is a COMPLETE WASTE OF MY TIME. The writing is terrible and it is the same story over and over and over and over and over and over again. I can only care about the local townfolks needs for so long before I get fed up and blast through to the end game.
Why do people get off thinking they are better gamers because they read those dumb little side stories or that other people are burnt out because they skip that part? Does everyone have to RP? I play mmo games to smash other people in open combat, not make sure the local baker has enough flour for his cakes.
You go ahead and read those, they are only timesinks to get people to play thier game longer anyways. Have fun.
Lack of content was also an issue even when wow first launched, all mmos suffer from it. Now after so many years of wow being around it has tons of content but the game is still crap.
This. People cry for content and there's a game sitting out there with more content than I've ever seen. Sure, it has a few bugs and there won't be new content, but there's enough there to last you a good long while.
[this post was only to discuss RIFT, as I have no intentions to really speak outside of it]
I didn't read every post word for word, thank you to everyone who took the time to read & reply, feedback and reviews although they make a small ripple in the ocean will help someone decide if this game is worth a darn, and or make someone who presently plays, re-think their involvement, hat said...
I am far from "burnt" out on gaming. Rather, as many have posted, very tired, more so annoyed at the "Quality" of the present gaming industry.
Idiocracy of Gaming Industry as a majority, not as a whole.
Some of the "Best" games IE complex, engaging, lengthy, and content filled.... Have *drum roll* crappy graphics.
Where as...
Some of the "Worst" games IE shiney, pretty, "oh, ah"... Have the worst gameplay.
Ive begun asking a question as of the last few years... Do programmers even participate in game creation, or are games just designed by Graphic Artists now? [it's a sarcastic questions]
Maybe the problem is slightly my own, maybe playing Games for almost 2 decades has really allowed me to personally watch the ups and downs of the gaming indusry, among other things.
Why did I try RIFT? [probably a question in some minds]
To support, the gaming industry.
The End.
