Just in case you never played the original Kotor game, the one that started it all, and while we wait for SWToR to come out, wanted to make you all know it is on sale on steam, no more than less than 3 bucks, it's worth a shot for that price. Im downloading it now.

I've had it for years, I don't know if steam makes a difference, but I find it doesn't run particularly well on Windows Vista or Windows 7. Playable, but it certainly has issues which makes it a bit frustrating. But like you said, it's less than 3 bucks, can't really beat that.
Edit: Oh, and I think it could be a pain to play with ati cards as well.
I wondered the same thing a while back, but I got around to buying it last year and am pleased to say that none of the problems I had with my physical copy existed in the Steam version.
I downloaded it for the then bargain price of $4.95 from Direct 2Drive last year. I can confirm that it ran just fine on my Windows 7 64 bit PC with an ATI 5870 graphics card.
Unfortunately the game itself is looking a bit dated now but for three bucks I guess you can't go wrong.
Turn off V-Sync and the annoyance of 'char not reconizing input' will go away. As far as I know that's the only big one.

Well been playing it for few hours this morning, it truly is a fun game to play, makes me think about SWToR and how good it will probably be.
For those that don't like Steam, like myself, it is also available on Direct2Drive for $3.95.
Does not support Widescreen resolutions without 3rd party modification.
Some glitches after CG playback.(this one might just be me )
Brought it on steam 3 months ago for $19.95

I picked up KOTOR when it first released years ago. I replay it about every six months.
It's "therapy" for me. That and the Darth Bane trilogy of books.
As long as SWTOR can give me more KOTOR, I will be one happy gamer.
