Elder Scrolls... Sci-fi

Was just curious if anyone was aware of a game similar in its sandboxy goodness to the ElderScrolls series but set in the future. Fallout is still too current. Same weapons, same locals. Looking for something more spacy with aliens and strange tech. Thanks.

X3 Terran Conflict is about the closest thing I can think of. It's more ship combat than FPS though, but it's single player, fairly sandboxy like ES and Fallout, and has plenty more "spacey with aliens and strange tech".

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isnt X3 ship only?  I didnt think you could get off ships.

Pretty sure you are correct. I haven't played it but I have a friend hopelessly addicted to it. It meets all the OP's requirements (except that instead of walking around the world, you fly around in space).

I never played X3 yet played a ton of X2, in that there were things to do outside of your ship. Not on land aside from dialogue moments, but in space you can exit your ship, at some points you basically had to to clear mines etc...

I would suggest Precursors.  It's a sci fi single player game, with plenty of quests, space flight, ground combat, and some great things such as:

Alt-Current World Sci-Fi:   S.T.A.L.K.E.R series, Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat for the 2 best of the three.

Big, open worlds, solid faction/dialogue systems. Not as hard-RPG as Elder Scrolls, but what it may lack it stat/skill-driven combat it replaces with a bit more demanding/rewarding FPS combat, and fantastic day/night cycle including the dangers of walking with a flashlight on through an empty field.

Last weeks Steam sale had the series as low as 12 bucks for all three, roughly 20ish ea if not on sale.

Future World Sci-Fi: Deus Ex: Human Revolution, comes out in a few weeks.

More driven story wise than Elder Scrolls, but a lot of variety in choices on how to complete things. And, it has a PC-specific UI that makes PC feel better rather than just shoe-horning the console UI onto PC players, and it all feels reminscent of the original Deus Ex.

You can punch through a wall with robot arms and snap a dudes neck on the way out, its sweet.

As others mentions, the X-series. Another good one to find in bundle/Superbox sales for bang for buck.

Other people covered it, but the game does just have something special when you want to just roll up in a big-ass fleet of ships and have a lot of good variety in gameplay. If only EVE had X-series flight controls for small ships, and the point-click for the biguns...

But be ready for some wonky dialogue...

If you've got the nerve for some crazy Retro-games though, try to hunt down the System Shock series.

Did you ever hear of the Parkan series?

There was a game called Freelancer that I found quite fun. From what I remember, it was like Elder Scrolls but also mostly ship combat from what I recall. But a large wide open world where you can just play and become whatever you'd like. You can still pick it up on Amazon. Here are some of the points of the game from the description:

    • Open-Ended Universe - Play missions randomly or follow the storyline. The universe is open for exploration, and the game evolves based on the decisions you make. Demolish pirate bases or supply depots and watch the political fallout. Lane Hackers go after cargo vessels if you disable trade lanes. Support your local cop...or not. The choice is yours but the universe won't wait for you.

    • Dynamic Reputation - Your choice in missions, your successes, your failures...they all change your reputation constantly. Play as a Naval Officer and everyone associated with the Navy will treat you better. Become a pirate and hunt down cargo vessels and youll soon have friends in low places. The missions youre offered and the technology you have access to all depend on who you become.

    • Distinctive Styles of Play - Chase the almighty dollar, disrupt the corrupt government, enforce the law, chase human prey...every game is different. Want access to easy money? Become a Lane Hacker: take dowenemies blind. Politics and intrigue are everywhere in the universe. If you have what it takes to be a CEO here on Earth....

    • Intuitive Interface - Master the intricacies of space combat via mouse. Don't have a joystick? Hate all those buttons anyway? A mouse and a keyboard puts you in the game
