Any quality 2D/Indie MMOs?

Well I started MMOs in 98' with Ultima Online, I've grown extremely bored with the game and have tried hundreds of others, nothing seems to hold my attention very long.  I enjoyed Dragon Gem, the 2D platformer but sadly that shut down.  What I'm looking for is a nice 2D game, Indie would work with some customization when it comes to how my character looks and some in depth gameplay.

 

If anyone knows of any games currently being developed and/or finished that would be amazing.

Sounds like you're after a sandbox/2D?

I'm playing Outer Empires (see sig): It's sci-fi but I enjoy it so far and see potential there as it's sorta got that sandbox freedom and growth, as well as being playable on iOS mobile too. That's my only possible suggestion from experience that fits the x2 criteria above. I enjoyed Elite back in the day... so ; ) It's free to try browser game.

Sandbox isn't neccarasily a requirement, I just want an attractive 2D game with extensive character customization (hair/armor/clothes/weapons).  Scifi isn't quite my style although the game looks quite attractive, I may give it a shot though, can't diss something until you try it.

 

Possibly something along the lines of Dark Ages?

Does anyone know of any other places to ask?  Seems here is not the best =/
