You should add it, it would be nice to get a decent game you know that golden idol hidden inside the massive piles of shit the call mmorpg's on this site
Guild wars and many other similar games are on this site. So why not add it? Personally, I wish they would alter the game list some so we could get a clear seperation between games that offer a mostly instanced world vs full MMOs.
This site lost its identity a long time ago. Honestly, who cares what game you list here any more? I'll just do as I do now, click on the ones I want to know about and ignore the rest.
-Letting Derek Smart work on your game is like letting Osama bin Laden work in the White House. Something will burn.- -And on the 8th day, man created God.-
hehe jk.I Voted yes.Why not.It has certain aspects of a MMORPG.And honestly who cares if its on the site.If theres something on here you don't care about ,it's simple.Don't read it.But by adding it , you may draw in people to check out other games while looking at D3 articles , that don't normally play MMO's.
Besides the votes have spoken.I think its great to have a wider scope on what you cover. Its not like you come on here and are forced to read anything.
I vote yes. My reasoning is that nearly every mmo uses an in game currency auction house. They are a HUGE part of almost every legendary mmorpg. Noone can debate that WoW has the most subscribers. And since Blizzard made WoW, it is likely that the WoW userbase will take an interest in this game due to the fact that #1) it is a blizzard game. #2) It will not compete for monthly subs so both can be played at once. And since the vast majority of mmo players will be exposed to this new auction house system for the first time, (not saying its the first time its been done. saying its the first time most casual mmorpgers will see it.) i believe it has the potential to have a profound impact on the actual evolution of the genre. But thats just my 2 cents.
It's not an MMO but you guys should make a seprate game list for non MMO's. I know the sites name is mmorpg but I see no reason there can not be other game lists to talk about.
I can feel your anger. This game is defenseless. Take your weapon. Strike this game down with all of your hatred, and your journey towards towards the Dark Side will be complete.
Why not just change the site to "Multiplayer Video Gaming" and avoid the hassle? The MMORPG genre has become so broad and watered down you may as well do it just to protect the site's raison d'être.
Don't say "RPG - check" where the heck is Role Playing in Diablo series besides gaining levels. There's nothing RPG about Diablo as much as there's nothing RPG about many other MMO-"RPGs" that were released. They are all a bunch of Action/Combat centered "Games" with leveling mechanic. Leveling mechanic does not equal Role Playing.
I don't think there's a clear line in the sand. I voted no, but my long winded opinion is sort of. People, including myself come here about MMO news. MMO being 1000+ to me. 100+ to others. It would be nice to include other non-MMO's or those that are a little fuzzy. But the list should then categorize them such that those wanting to find an MMO in the 100/1000+ sense... get just games that relate to that.
Because I come here to read about MMO's, not about games with a multiplayer element. That is not being a purist, that is simply the scope of this website and the reason I am here. Would I not come to this website if they add it? I most likely will if it's only one game, but really, if you add D3 then why not add D2 as well and Torchlight + other games. Because you either have to include it all or include none in my opinion.
Your opinion is fundamentally flawed. Here's why:
1. There are already games on this site that don't fall into the traditional Everquest / Asheron's Call / Dark Age of Camelot / World of Warcraft modes of mmorpg-dom. There are numerous mmorpgs listed on this site that have a lot more in common with what Diablo 3 will be, than what World of Warcraft (or any 'traditional' mmorpg) is now.
2. Your example fails. If you add D3, then why not add D2? Well for one, D2 is ten years old and did not fall into the much more rigid definition of mmorpg back when it was released. Why not add Torchlight? Have you played Torchlight? If yes, you might have noticed that there's no multiplayer component whatsoever.
You can get legalistic on folks about what exactly "massively multiplayer" means, but you won't get far trying to claim a game with no online component or multiplayer functions falls into that category. Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 at least had/will have massive online communities.
All mmorpg games feature a mixture of activities you can do alone or with friends. Simply giving a player the ability to advance through the game without being in a group of people doesn't exclude a game from being an mmorpg.
The real answer lies in defining "Massive" otherwise it's just an MO and doesn't fit the industry genre of games covered here. Diablo 3 has not change the battlenet organization of players so with player parties limited in size I don't see it being Massive at all. The will have a massive number of players pooled to group up but since they cannot interact in game at the same time enmass, I have to give Diablo 3 a no go for MMORPG's lists.
Funny, the poll I started last October showed only 12.9% of voters said Yes.
Copy/pasting my 2 cents on the issue from my old thread:
Personally, I think that by definition it is, however primitive, an MMORPG. Stay with me here:
You have an avatar that you get to choose. Granted, you can't customize face, hair, eyes, cheeks, etc, but you do have a choice. Each class has a specific role to play. You have sorcs, zons, assassins, pallys (hammerdins anyone? ), you name it. All have a specific set of skills and different style of gameplay able to function well solo or within a group. You get quests, fight monsters, and level up. When you level, you assign attribute points to your basic attributes (Strength, stamina, etc) and assign a skill point. The more you level up a skill, the more effective it becomes. You come back to town and sell your loot for cash. You need mana/health potions to survive. When you're done with the quests in a certain town, you move on to the next one. There were raids. Before you say no, tell me what were Baal runs? Meph runs? Yep, they were raids. A group of people would get together aiming to kill a certain boss to get certain loot. Certain runs which I can't remember specific names of had certain things you had to do to get the boss to spawn.
I assume most people will vote against the fact that it is an MMORPG. Someone in the thread this discussion originally started in even mentioned that Blizzard themselves stated that it is not an MMORPG, but I highly disagree. Let me remind you that there are many different styles of MMORPG's (sandbox, FPS, theme park, etc). I don't know exactly what you would call Diablo 2, but while it might not fit theexactconventional use of the term MMORPG, it's pretty damn close.
Really, it comes down to serving your audience. The literal or technical definition of MMORPG doesn't matter much. You are in essence a game fan site. Because a large majority of us who read this site, and play MMORPGs, will also be playing Diablo 3, it makes perfect sense for you to include it in your coverage. I honestly think you would be serving the majority of your current readers by including it, and might even attract new readers who find your D3 coverage through search engines. This could serve to expand the audience for other, more classical MMORPGs. That would only benefit all of us, by increasing the market size and drawing more developers.

Huh? It's not an MMO. But do whatever you want, it's your site.
if you add D3 you should also add the hack n' slash MMOs
Path of exile (Free to play)
Grim Dawn (indie game with former Titan Quest designers)
Torchlight 2
No Offline Play, Online, MMO, Type of RPG... Add
Add it or I sacrifice a puppy......

Yes, please
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
How is it an MMO?
I must be missing something here..

I say no to Diablo 3, but that may be just because of my deep hatred of blizzard and how they have become one of the most materialistic devs around.
It's sad to see how RPG = Gaining Level.

End of Line
They'd put Pong on here if it would increase Ad revenues. Personally I don't care.
This entire article and thread is just to give you the illusion you have a say anyway.

Yes add it. I'm looking forward to calling it WOW'ish with too many WOW game mechanics and possibly a WOW clone.
Since this site has already added a ton of games which is less of an MMORPG than Diablo 3, why not.
