D3 is NOT an MMORPG. Just like BF3 isn't an MMORPG. WoT is not an MMORPG. What they are is Pay to Win RPGs that are getting fancier and fancier chat rooms. Yes, they are multi-player, but they are not massive at all. This is the problem when you start adding games like Fury and Hellgate:London and World of Tanks to the list. It makes it harder and harder for people new to the genre to determine what is an MMORPG and what isn't.
What the staff at MMORPG.com needs to decide is if this website is going to continue to be MMORPG.com or change to MORPG.com thus dropping massively.
It seems to me the ONLY reason you would want to add D3 to your lineup is for the hits that you know D3 will bring you, thus driving ad revenue. That's the bottom line and that is what this is all really about. Everyone knows this D3 will be the game of year when it's released. The question is, are you going to stay true to your roots at mmorpg.com or are you going to follow the ad revenue that D3 hits would bring.
But who cares, add Diablo 3 and Torchlight 2. Having MMO's and Co-op games listed here would be nice. But if your not going to add all games of the same genre then no. If D3 is in then all those like it should be as well.

They know it's not an MMORPG, that's not the point. The point is they're trying to gauge interest in D3 and whether or not this sites community is interested in talking or hearing about D3.
They've already made that decision, that's why they've started covering more than just traditional MMORPGs. The industry has expanded in regard to the term MMO, this site is only following that trend.

The 1st and 2nd 'M's should be taken taken together for 'Massively Multiplayer', meaning multiplayer on a massive scale, rather than only 32 people top a server.
On those grounds, I don't think D3 should be included.

It will still fit "Massively Multiplayer" as in 3 Million people playing the game online.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

With that logic than every single console game on the planet should be listed here as well.
You would be better to just start a second wepage like Multiplayer games or soemthing as LoL is not Massive(10 players at once tops) and not Rpg(well that should be obvious)...
I would say you should add it if you change the context of the site to include RPGs, but I come here for MMORPG news, not single player game with an online component news,

A lot of them already are.
I think one of the factors should be, "Do people on this website talk about the game on a regular basis." They do. So the conversations should be in their own section - named "Diablo III".

As a reminder, we at MMORPG.com are working actively to ensure that a wide variety of games that have ties to traditional MMORPGs are covered here on the site if nowhere else than our Games List. Our scope is widening to cover MOBAs, MMORTS, MMOFPS, traditional RPGs, action-RPGs and more that have even what some would call 'cursory' connections to MMORPGs. Our plan is to make the Games List "sortable" by genre similar to those listed above.
As Boltonsquad stated:
Of course it should be added, maybe it's not an MMO as such but its an RPG and many player will be investing in it and it would be nice to have a discussion on it here.
The acronym MMORPG, coined by Richard Garriott, used to cover about 5-6 games total.
Now in recent years the genre has spread its wings in a big way. The sheer number of new games coming out itself broadens the spectrum of what a MMO is. It will not get any easier in the future to classify a game.Indeed the push towards online gaming on all platforms has blurred the lines significanlty.
Instead of practicing exclusion, the gaming community needs to embrace the new takes on our favorite genre. Innovation and growth are the same thing in our hobby. If you want better games in the future, you need to let ideas grow into innovation. Even if it doesn't fit neatly into your preconcieved definition.
Have a sense of humor, no need to get ALL MODDY ! A Simpson's quote shouldn't be worth a warning. You are lucky anyone is bothering to read this rag.

Just keep in mind if you add something like D3 to the game list and do not include others of it's kind it won't be viewed as a simple impartial "We are simply widening our scope" kind of thing. You add one you add them all otherwise its seen more as expanding your wallets rather than expanding your scope.
It's just like almost every other supposed "MMORPG" out their with instances, lobby systems, and the ability to play without ever having to talk to anyone else, in game, ever.
Do I believe Diablo 3 is an MMO, no, but I also dont' believe 99% of the games listed on this site are MMO's...so who cares.
For what it's worth, our expansion in scope dates to about a month ago. I don't know if we'll retroactively include games from before that time but definitely have plans to move forward with the likes of Skyrim, Torchlight 2 and other great RPGs coming down the pike.

Well it would be a matter of relevance as well per game. I mean Titan Quest as an example isn't exactly something warranting new discussion. D3, TL2 ect... are upcoming games with lots of buzz, making them relevant, they don't need to add every dungeon crawler in existence, just the ones that are relevant today.

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
Diablo 3 may not be a MMORPG, but it is a MORPG (multiplayer online role-playing game). I'm also quite sure there will be massive amounts of people playing it, so it might even meet the full MMORPG criteria if you stretch it a tad. It is definitely close enough in my book and I think it is even closer to the definition than games like League of Legends.

Online? Yep.

GW1 is here but it's not an MMO. I predict more people will buy and actually play D3 than GW1 so yeah I think it deserves a spot.

Power to the Sheeple
I would be interested in seeing some D3 stuff on here for sure, this site is the main site i use to get rpg info.
D3 have been a hot topic on this site for a week or so.
It is not Massively Multilayer Game so NO.
If you add Diablo 3 you would have to add dozens of other games as well .
I voted YES.
I just would like to see what the staff here says about D3 and some other games.
I don't believe there is any danger of dillution of the "MMO" name. Toss D3 in with the MOBA's.

Yes add it sense you have Guild Wars on here. But you need to give Phantasy Star Online 2 some loving as well.
My theme song.

I also would like to see the scope of this website enlarged to include RPGs as well as MMORPGs as there are no good RPG sites to discuss RPGs.
One thing i'm sure of, the game will be listed here regardless of what is said in the thread.
Add it, why not?
