I'm sure it has already been said, but as long as we are looking at the list of mmos we do have, can we delete ones that are six feet under?

Or maybe a seperate list to discuss those inactive/dead mmorpgs.

Diablo 3 has ONLY online content, so everyone who is comparing it to ANY console game or FPS or single player game that happens to have online content, think about that for a second.

    ONLY online play

Where do you guys get the idea that Diablo isn't an RPG?  You can call a duck a dog but that doesn't make it a dog...   It is MOST CERTIANLY an RPG.

    an MMO?   YES

Is it being played online by a massive number of players?  YES

Is it a persistant world?  NO

Is a presistant world a prerequisite for being an MMO?  NO

    Its an MMORPG.

Well this is your site and if you want to add the worst and most lame RPG that exists then go ahead. It will not lower my allready low opinion of MMORPG as a viable and unbiased site for MMORPG games.

Personally, I don't think the game justifies being called an MMO, because you're not playing in a world that is capable of sustaining thousands of players at a time. Perhaps there should just be a "Multiplayer RPG" section? Something not directly related to being massive?

I think they've got you covered there.

Our plan is to make the Games List "sortable" by genre.

You people run a business.  If listing will increase revenue, do it.  Nobody should be turning down work in this economy.

I like the idea of improving the MMORPG.com chart.  It's not very useful other than as a quick way to look up a game.

No. Its not an MMORPG. People saying that GW is just like Diablo 2 have never played GW.

Principle? What principle is involved here?

I think when people make the comparison they're referring to the use of a lobby, yes GW1's world is basically a lobby, you enter the actual gaming through it. There's nothing to actually do inside of the " multi-player world" aside from chat and trade. Most just stand around waiting for a game to pop, that's not much different than a lobby outside of the interface and portal to play.

I don't understand the drama purists much when they complain over this stuff anyhow tbh.

Because I come here to read about MMO's, not about games with a multiplayer element. That is not being a purist, that is simply the scope of this website and the reason I am here. Would I not come to this website if they add it? I most likely will if it's only one game, but really, if you add D3 then why not add D2 as well and Torchlight + other games. Because you either have to include it all or include none in my opinion.

I didn't have to read past this post to be done with this thread as this pretty much sums up my opinion on the matter as well. If you decide to add D3 to the games list than it will open up Pandora's Box so to speak. This means every time a new RPG hits the market that happens to have a multiplayer aspect to it someone's going to be on the forum complaining it's not on the list. People will reply, "It isn't a MMO now is it?" To which we will hear, "Well D3 is on the list so..."

Putting D3 on the games list is a huge mistake in my opinion as it will remove some of this site's identity in the process. This will no longer be MMORPG.com... It will be MORPG.com from that point forward. You've already made 2 other websites to cover other genres in online gaming... Maybe it's time to consider a RPGguru website as well.

Seriously? A game only needs to be online, with a massive player base, to make it an MMO? That's news to me. I mean, by this definition, COD 4 fits your description. There are hundreds of thousands of users in lobbies, who feed into an online game with semi-RPG mechanics. Why not add it to the site as well?

And for the record, persistant worlds are a prerequisite for a game being an MMO. You can disagree all you like, but it's not really up for discussion.

Remove Guild Wars from this site and you can solve this problem!

You can't deny Diablo 2 or 3 and have Guild Wars on here...

They are the same damn game concept.  Lobby and instanced small group content.

I think that it IS up for discussion as that is pretty much the topic of this entire thread...

CoD isn't an RPG, its a FPS.

This.  In addition it'll lend insight into the RMT and player identification discussions.  We may need to change the acronym of our beloved MMORPGs to maintain some of the tradition.  I think the word persistant, while assumed, has always strangely been missing from the acronym.  PMMORPGs perhaps?  We're now in an age of hybrid themeparks/lobby games.  Had you asked this question in 2004, I bet 90% would have said NO, it shouldn't be included.  Frankly, I don't think Diablo is all that different from the current rendition of WoW.  Not in description anyway.  Easy to see but hard to explain, I guess?  Times have changed.  The purists will perish in their own flames :)

I honestly think the mmo genre and this site need to start segregating more so I dont have to wade through 1000s of posts for console games with auction houses and f2p garbage ..

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

Silly question when you already have games like League of Legends and Guild Wars on the list.

  • sigrethsigreth Member UncommonPosts: 21

I don't know if this has been mentioned above. But have you guys thought about making RPGguru.com or something similar, like you have with FPS and RTS. I honestly love traditional RPGs and co-op rpgs. The problem is no there are no good news sites out there catered to those type of games. I've missed a good 5 years of RPG games because I had no idea they were there. Just a thought.

D3 added, then Torchlight 2? Also, Torchlight MMORPG will be in the works if not already.

Yeah, I mentioned it above but it's nice to see someone else with the same line of thinking. With D3, TES V, Torchlight 2 and a whole host of other great games on the horizon I would think it would be a no-brainer. They could also move some of the more controversial games on this site already over there as well. This would give all us RPG fanatics a new news site and keep this site 'MMO Pure' at the same time. I was really surprised that RPGguru wasn't the first secondary site they launched to be honest. With the RPG fanatics that started and run this site I would think it would have been a given.

Whether picky people think it's an mmorpg or not, the odds are overwhelming...Ðiablo 3 is going to be a money-maker, why not cash-in, draw more people here to my favorite site...I think it has become an easy decision for you guys!  image

I think there should be a RPGguru.com instead to be honest. There are just so many great rpgs out there that you can cover. MMOrpg should stay mmorpg! :)

But is Diablo 3 really an RPG game? The first 2 games were considered "action games" at the time they released becuase they had rather limited RPG features.

I agree that this site should focus on MMORPGs and CORPGs, D3 isn't either.

its not an mmo.  Might as well start putting up all the zynga shit too while you're at it.

  • ThekandyThekandy Member Posts: 621

I'm pretty sure a persistent gameworld plays a big role in defining a MMORPG.

But what the heck, the more the merrier, might even add little genre and sub-genre title cards.
