To me there is no this versus that.  Since I usually only have one mmo subscription at a time, it will be TOR when it gets released.  Since GW2 is B2P, I'll have that too.  Win Win for me is the way I look at it.

I'm on the side of those who don't think they can lump everyone into two small categories. I'll play both.

+ 1 for common sense, in contrast to the usual closed-mindedness and extreme generalisations you frequently encounter on forums here.

Can you be on both? Having never played any MMO seriously yet, like hardcore raiding and all that, SWTOR's style is still very fresh to me, (also maybe the reason why I'm can be so interested in Rift sometimes), but GW2 interest me since I know the basics of current MMO design, and how GW2 is changing it.

    So I'm both! :D

As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.

I am going to enjoy both. GW fans vs SWTOR fans is just childish and waste of time. Why can't we just be fans of MMORPG? instead of dividing into camps of particular MMOS?

ummm stars wars is made bye bioware made mass effect and guild wars has story and lore in it as well. but i am not worried about the grachics i mean not every one can afford super computers or upgrades is probly why tor went that route. now guild wars i wont play it not matter how many times you depate nothing new about guild wars i seen all the videos nothing to wow me over. i seen alot of games made for those who like it if guild wars is your game then who cares what the other person says..... just have fun with what you like. its just this this discussion about this vs that why cant you just enjoy what you like and let the other person enjoy what he likes i mean ant that what games are for fun. i mean life real life already offers stress and games are for relaxing and fun. i am not geting guild wars two because i never got the other one i am sci fiction fan i like space combat games.like eve online and star wars i know star wars dont have space combat but i like the blasters more furture like for me so it fits me ^_^..... flame on..

The OP made some good solid points. I do not consider the two games to be in competition at all, as the OP stated because one is B2P (which I will) and the other P2P (which I will). I look forward to both and hope to enjoy them. TSW is the third game in my interest level and as to its business model, well, no word as yet. Whatever it is I am interested in the game and if it doesn't go PVP centric then I intend to buy it and see if it lives up to my hopes for that genre.

All in all I have a lot to look forward to in the next several months. The only competition I will have is how much of my play time for each game. Like having 3 top knotch quarterbacks, who do I play? Not exactly a bad situation. Not really interested in game PVP and even less in forum PVP. Good post OP - well done!

Actually Star Wars is planned for a december release this year, Guild Wars 2 is "sometime in 2012" my guess being somewhere between march-june.

TOR has no release date yet, it won't be announced until Septemeber. The only known fact is that it's coming out before the end of the year.

    Don't know.

I've learned that the feature list doesn't tell you whether the game is fun or not. you only find out after it's released.

Beta can be a good indication, but the general public is even better.

If the masses say it sucks, usually it sucks.

If the masses say it's fun, it might be fun, might not be.

So have to wait on release.

"Different", or "Clone", it's gotta be fun.

I'd play a fun clone over a crappy "different" game for sure.

Darkfall is very different. I don't want to play it.

He just said if it's a clone or different it's gotta be fun. WAR isn't fun, so no I doubt he wants to play it. Good job reading though.

All computer games competes for all gamers money, so in that way are they competing.

But I don't think single out 2 games is fair to them or the other games. And I am not so sure that they will even attract the same type of players to them either.

I am rather tired of the idea many people here seems to have, that one of these 2 games must win some kind of competition, it is most likely that both do fine but if they don't it is because the game wasn't good enough, not because of some kind of competition..

Darkfall is not made by a AAA MMO company like NC Soft / Arena Net that has made some of the most succesful mmos released.

what's the point in acting like the impressions from the many people who have played GW2 don't exist? it's more fun watching GW2 videos than playing some of these shitty games out now(WAR, Rift). i've played it on two separate occasions and TOR at PAX, of course i'll be seen as a troll but there's very little debate to me which is more fun to play.

  • SpandexDroidSpandexDroid Member Posts: 277

Many will be playing both SW:TOR and GW2 lol... GW2 will be also the game many will end up playing after /ragequiting [insert subscription-based MMO here]. There is not going to be "go back to WoW" anymore.

If you understand you're experience is based on your own preference I have no problem with your opinion. Just remember some of us haven't really spent time in games like WOW, LOTRO, WAR, etccc... That model is still relatively new to me, so I don't see why the model alone should make the game any less fun.

Also keep in mind that some of us have played non trinity action games to death and they are old news. Some of us prefer specific roles over free for all. Its all personal perspective. Youre not wrong for liking GW2 better and Im not wrong for being burn out on GW2 style combat.
  • fonyfony Member Posts: 755

they can both be fun but your post basically implied that GW2 wouldn't be.

    From the OP.

"I'm just wondering why are these two games suddenly "competing?" They are two of the farthest things apart from each other, the only real similarity is that they are both MMO's, which leads to my next question, why does every single MMO that is released have to fight off another MMO? Either two new releases are apparently fighting it out to the death for subscribers, or a new release MUST beat World of Warcraft in order to become a success, or win in other words."

MMO games have to have a community to be a MMO game. Single player games sometimes have online communities but no where near the extent of a MMO.In order to be part of a community you must invest something of yourself into the community. This is the basis of the "my MMO is better than your MMO" arguement. As a person who has chosen a "sportsteam/ MMO" you have invested of yourself into that "team/mmo". This would be fine if there was only one sports team or MMO to choose from.

The fact that multiple teams/mmo's exist causes rivalries.  Packer fans and Bear fans have a lot in common, right? They both come from the same part of the country, they both like football, they even look a little bit alike ! (usually round) Yet the fan from one team will go out of his way to bad talk the other team if anyone is willing to listen, and if it is a fan of the other team, even better. This friendly rivalry makes the game itself more interesting. IE; You hope your team wins so you can rub it in the face of the fans of the other team. "Packers won the last SuperBowl." wins any arguement with a Bears fan, this year.

So it is in sports, so it is in MMO's.

People back a game and invest their time into it, they want their team to win. They want their game to be the best. They also want to rub their rivals face in it.

Your team winning the superbowl feels great! Looking at the sour face of the Bears fan who works down the hall all year is Priceless.

So to answer your question,"Why does every single MMO that is released have to fight off another MMO?"

It's the people, their desire to be #1 and the desire to talk bad about #2.

Which incedentally explains why gear grinds work as well.

Have a sense of humor, no need to get ALL MODDY ! :) A Simpson's quote shouldn't be worth a warning. You are lucky anyone is bothering to read this rag.

  • prodigaL_sonprodigaL_son Member Posts: 21

They are being compared because the two main games that are out right now, Rift and WoW people are either bored of, or in Rift's case are just lame.

I can't wait for those two game to come out.  I just unsubbed from Rift, which is a terrible game and and hoping that the MMO isn't completely tarnished and cliche ridden by WoW.  If GW2 and SWTOR suck, yoiu can all bet ur asses that this genre is as good as dead.

I am seriously so sick of the typical MMO "gear grind".  Who really gives a crap about fake gear?  Can't anyone who can make a difference have a decent idea?  I have a great idea, but Bioware or Blizzard or any of these gay MMO companies dont give a crap what the people playing the games think.

I mean, have any of you actually played Rift?  That game is such a pathetic rip on all the MMO fanbois.  They jam the same crap down your throat over and over with different names and expect us to keep eating.  Well im fucking full of shit food.  Gimmie something different.

Make it harder to level so endgame doesn't arrive in 2 weeks and I don't have to play the same dungeon more than 3 times to get a peice of stupid gear.  Dont make PvP gear dependant.  Allow people to compete, that is what keeps games fun.  Competition, creativity and freedom.  None of the current mmos have that and that is why everyone is excited for GW2 and SWTOR.  I pray that one of them is exciting.
