Going back to WoW....yet again.

Okay.  I know on this site that this post will probably earn me a goodly amount of flaming.  But I have to tell my story to someone and you good people are really the only ones that would understand it.

EQ2 is my usual MMO of choice. I have played it for 7 years. Part of that time, from release, as a matter of fact, I played WoW along WITH EQ2.  But lately, EQ2 has gotten dry for me since my guild is no longer very active and frankly....there's just no one my level to play with unless I want to spend all my time in dungeons.  I'm pretty sick of raiding still from my WoW days, so....uhm....no.

So I have this plan.  I figure if I start over completely on an RP server, flat broke, and my characters newbs.....I might feel a little of what it used to be like, just maybe.  I'm not transferring any of my 80s or my 85 with all the gold, just starting out in poverty, you know...like back in the old days.  I've never been on an RP server, so that will also be new.

Am I deluding myself, or is it possible to capture some of that old time fun?  I've already subbed for a month, so....the decision is made....for now.  But I wondered if anyone else has been able to go back and have fun just starting fresh and in poverty?

I tried, but it all seems so monotonous.

  • just1opinionjust1opinion Member UncommonPosts: 4,641

Yeah....monotony is kind of what worries me. :(   I'm hoping I can find a way like....I don't know....reading all the quests again?  I haven't read the quests since my first toon, so....like through 10 characters I have skipped reading them?  lol  Maybe if I try to immerse myself in the lore....I don't know.  Maybe I'm clutching at straws.

Maybe if I find a good guild of roleplayers too....that could be fun, I suppose.

    Here's my story...

I quit WoW once I got into Rift beta shortly after Cataclysm came out. I had done a lot of heroic grinding to get raid ready and so forth and I just really couldn't stand the game anymore. Things just seemed to be heading for the worse... and I just didn't want to have wasted a ton of time on a game if it was just going to continue to get bad.

Well, I've been playing Rift since it was relased and I was getting spam emails from blizzard asking me to go back for a free 7 days. So... I reinstalled Wow... Logged in... and had absolutely no desire to do anything. I chat with some old guild mates and that was about it. I just couldn't motivate myself to do anything in what has become a terrible game. So I eventually ended up loggin on to all my toon, selling everything, and giving my old guild leader about 10k gold. I logged out and uninstalled.

I don't regret my decisions and I do not plan on ever going back.

  • just1opinionjust1opinion Member UncommonPosts: 4,641

ACK.  I sense a common thread unfolding here. :(

I would have to say this is my last attempt at WoW, since other games that I am interested in are around the corner.  I might be overly hopeful that I can squeeze the last drops of fun from it, but....I feel like I need to at least try (for some strange reason).

Oh and I got the 7 free days too....I forgot about that, so I actually have NOT paid for a sub yet.  I guess if those 7 days turn out for me like they did for you then someone in my old guild is going to be needlessly richer and I'm going to clear up some HD space, huh?

Yeah you made  a  good choice. Its good to have a couple of mmorpg to fall back on when you get sick  and tired of one game. I did the same for ff11. Have no regrets unistalling the game and never looking back. I tried wow for about a day and said no freaking way and unistalled it. Seems like wow has seen better days.

Don't feel bad, I've done it myself.  I left WoW the first time years ago, spent time on other MMOs for about a year and a half, and actually got nostalgic for WoW again.  So I went back, started from scratch, and stayed with it for 3 years.  I finally cancelled my account about 4 months ago because I just finally got bored of it and wanted to try something different.  I doubt I'll go back, as I've lost the desire to raid anymore, and after being a hardcore raider for the better part of two years, I felt it was time to become more casual in my gameplay.

Anyway, I like your idea of starting over broke and poor.  There is something very fun about having to earn that gold from scratch again.  Any gear you pick up will be more meaningful.  Have you played WoW since Cataclysm came out?  The old world zones have very solid questing now, including phasing in some of them.  Much, much more enjoyable that it used to be. This is the one thing that Cataclysm did right---re-doing all the old zones and streamling the questing there.  What they did was make WoW more enjoyable for new players and alts, and less enjoyable for raiders and endgame players.  So for your situation, I think you'll like it.

One other question:  Have you tried playing LOTRO?  I know you mentioned you'd jump on an RP server for WoW.  If you are looking to be a casual player, and not looking as much into raiding and endgame, you may enjoy LOTRO too.  Great scenary, a lot of fun if you are willing to take things slowly and not concerned about rushing to end game, and probably the best RP MMORPG around.  The Landroval server is full of dedicated RPers.  Also, LOTRO does have a form of alternate advancement at later levels with the Legacy Weapon system.  It's not as in depth as EQ2, which has the best AA system, but it's pretty solid and will give you things to do late levels if you aren't interested in raiding.

Anyway, good luck in WoW.  I just got bored of the game after a while, but if I was to ever go back, I'd do it exactly the way you do.

Nooooooo...... Well if you can still find entertainment in the game then have at it I say. To the RP server, if that's something you either like, or dont mind then more power to you. I played on a RP server by accident in my early days and It almost killed it for me. As long as people don't overdue it. I was actually messaged for running through the town when I was informed I should havebeen walking because people don't run for no reason -.-   yeah that ended well.

I personally can't find enjoyment from it anymore. My last venture was shortly after CATA released because over the christmas holidays I visited old friends and they raved about all the changes and well    it lasted a couple months I supppose. Once you've tried every class and spanned multiple servers from rp pvp and pve there was little left to see for me anyways. I dont condemn you for it though since there reallly is very little out there that is as polished. I give them that much the game is pretty good at the few things it does right.  Good luck to you and hope something comes out sooner than later because starting from scratch won't bring back any luster. Me and the wife tried that as well and it didn't last.

Thank you for extending to me....some hope.  I'm not into the raiding and endgame any more either.  Been there, done that, wore out the t-shirt, you could say.  So I really am wanting to stay super casual and just have a little fun.  I'm TIRED of "serious" gaming.  Too many years....blech.

I have played LotRO to level 37 (minstrel)and 29 (runekeeper).  I liked the game, but....I logged into it since it went free to play and I frankly don't care for it now. Something about it just feels different.  Oh...and I HATE their housing.  Coming from EQ2's housing...that housing just doesn't fly for me.  I'd rather have NO housing than what LotRO has.  But I loved making music. :)  I played with Bards of a Feather for a while. :)

Going back to LotRO would cost me more as I'm several expansions behind now.  I left off with Mines of Moria, so....I guess WoW it will be and I will just hope for the best.  If it's horrid....I can always try something else. :)

My friend started playing MMOs just recently, and has "heard" about WoW so he wanted to play it, I haven't played in 3 years.

It has been O.K. fun for me to play again, but all I do is run dungeons and BGs, hehe, but I also engage in "other" things.

    For example...

I went and bought about 150 leather balls from a merchant outside of shattrath and started a ball throwing war in Ironforge with 5+ people, that was fun.

I also am an engineer and make lots of steam tonk controllers and give them out to people to War with me.  We had about a 7 person battle going on, thats always fun.

Of course you can RP, RP silly games, or what not, I guess the game is what you make it.

Lots of new MMOs comming out though pretty soon, so keep your eye out for one that peaks your interest! :)

And yes starting with 0 gold and having to "earn your keep" is fun.

I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.

Don't do it! Just ask yourself, "What would April Ryan do?"

    Probably not play Warcraft!

LOL!!!!!  April Ryan would not have played WoW in the FIRST place, so...I've already screwed up there!  ;)  April is very brave.  She would probably play TSW, to be honest.  I think we have a long wait for that one though.  I'm waiting on GW2 for myself and for my friends to decide if they're going to FORCE me to play SWTOR. lol

Ugh, the housing.  I've never been able to get into EQ2 myself.  The gameplay just didn't do it for me.  But I would KILL to have their housing system in an MMO that I enjoy.  LOTRO's housing system flat out sucks.  No nice way to put it.  Oh well, I'm just biding my time until SWTOR and GW2 come out anyway.  And looking forward to Archeage down the road, as that definitely has the kind of housing I'll want in a game.

I think it may be possible .I kinda jump around mmogs myself.I spread out my time doing alot of things from various alts to tradeskills checking out different zones, working on achievements.Believe it or not even after 6 years in WoW I have yet to level up a horde character I figure if I ever do get totally bored I can do that and see a different part of the game,.

  • yuweeyuwee Member UncommonPosts: 16

As a player that had a similar plan, I wish you the best of luck. The only thing I can recommend is that if you want to last more than a week avoid the repeated use of the LFG tool. Once or twice is ok to get the dungeon quest done.. but you will soon find that it gets dull fast. On top of that you will level up far too quickly, making the quests that you are currently progressing through seemingly unsatisfying.

  • AglarannaAglaranna Member Posts: 204

Eh, don't feel bad. I know how you feel, and I'm doing the same thing. I tried all the other games (LOTRO, AoC, Rift, etc) for the last year and a half since I stopped playing WoW. They are ok, but seem to lack something. And what's worse is I could not get my friends or guildmates to try these other games. Basically it was just me and my husband, and I don't play MMOs to solo-play.

So I'm going back to WoW too, to rejoin my old guild and hang out with a few buddies until SWTOR or GW2 comes out. Gonna start a new toon also, although I don't need one cause I've tried every class, but just because I actually have not done the new revamped 1-60 experience.

  • SirAoSSirAoS Member Posts: 203

Really funny i just came across this post. I just got off WoW after getting the 7day thing for one of my accounts. It was my first time on since the beggining of Cata. I OMG. i can never get back into it again. Its been like that for me since WoTLK. But now. I log on for 2 seconds and im gone for months. this time though i think i'll never return again. everytime time i come back to check it out, its more sad than the last visit. Its nothing more than players sitting in towns que popping sitting on mounts they bought from a cash shop. Makes me actually sad this is what happend to MMOs. Im going to give FFXiV a try and im going to continue to play UO.

Anyways OP, don't waste your time. You wont get that feeling again. When i mentioned, i used to return to check the game out. I used to try and play to get that old feeling. And it used to work. but seeing the old world is gone forever, what i remember of it does not exsist anymore making it pointless to ever return.

  • teakboisteakbois Member Posts: 2,154

    OP:

If you are just looking to relax and waste some time and *start fresh* then WoW is probably a great fit if you dont mind quest content.  Simply, WoW's themepark questing is BY FAR the most entertaining out there 1-60.  The revamped Azeroth is 100% worth checking out if you enjoy both humorous and serious mini quest lines.

Itll be familiar yet fresh at the same time.  Quite a lot of nod to old quest lines as well and a very large assortment of extremely amusing new NPCs.  Maximillian of Northshire FTW

I would reccomend truning off experience at times just to see all the zones.

  • MogcatMogcat Member UncommonPosts: 193

OP WoW is WoW basically. You know what it is and you know what it does. If you like that then play it if you dont dont. It wont be anything except WoW. I enjoy it so I have tons of fun in WoW.

  • AuzyAuzy Member UncommonPosts: 611

    DONT DO IT!!!!

Immerse yourself with a single player game instead? - Witcher 2, Mass Effect 2 is cheap.

So many good MMO's around the corner (SWTOR, GW2) that you really shouldnt waste ur time with WoW.

Its like owning a halo game, if u own 1, u own them all.

    Uhh... what?

I agree with him, when cata released the horde side revamps were very epic feeling and enjoyable. So if you haven't done those yet, go back for that and go from there. There is enough content to casually sift thru 1-60 several times to catch all the changes for 1-2 months.

I have 10 Horde toons and only one Alliance and she's from clear back at release, so....I guess Alliance is what I should play for a "new" experience.  Either that or just roll a baby Hordie.  I mean, all my characters are 80 or 85 and I've never really done the new Cataclysm content other than the 80-85 parts.

    Good idea.  Thanks.

And thank you to everyone who has responded both positively and negatively regarding WoW.  I value all of your input.

Alliance has a TON of memorable stuff.

Westfall and Redridge are musts, they are memorable because they are highly amusing.  At the same time, Darkshore is worth doing for different reason, the after effects of the shattering.

Both Plaguelands zones are worth a look (now 30-35 and 35-40), with Fiona's caravan being notable

Badlands has both HIGHLY amusing and serious quests.  Searing Gorge introduces you to Lunk, the anti-killing ogre (who sadly has too few appearances).  And then there is Burning Steppes...the return of an NPC from one of the prior zones (I wont spoil it) and an absolutely hysterical cutscene at the end where you see your sabotage plans pay off.

And no leveling run should be complete without paying Maximillian a visit in ungoro.  FOR DOLORIA!

The Badlands quest where the npcs are telling the story of how they dealt with Deathwing...freakin' hilarious.  And loved the whole caravan questline in EPL.  Really enjoyable.

You know what? WoW isn't perfect, no MMO is but i've gone back again myself. This is the second time i've gone back, I played at launch and got turned away by some other MMO i cant even remember now. Then years after I went back, and started brand new and had a blast.

It is a good game, especially on RP servers. You gotta try to look past the gear grind though, RP a little bit get into your character enjoy the lore, the story the scenery, do some dailies RP some old raids and dungeons. It can be fun, its a beautiful world that gets ruined by the "run these dungeons over and over to get l33t gear" mentality.

P.S. I am on Moon Guard horde side. "Grendelar" is my name feel free to whisper me if you'd like a friend.
