Will this ram work with this mobo?

NagelFireNagelFire Member Posts: 409

My friend bought a pre-built PC off of newegg, and he wants to upgrade the ram in it.

The mobo he is using is the  acer RS880m05.

The ram he wants to put in it is  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145279.

Not sure if it will work, since I cant find anything on the mobo from google.

He's doing this in entirely the wrong order.  First, you're supposed to figure out what to get, and then only after you have some idea of what is good do you buy the system.  If he has to ask questions like this, then he wasn't ready to buy a computer in the first place.  Unfortunately, New Egg doesn't allow returns on prebuilt computers, so he's probably stuck with something where trying to make a nice computer out of it would require replacing nearly all of the parts.

RS880 probably means it has an 880G chipset, which would mean it requires DDR3 memory.  If so, then the memory will probably work if the motherboard has four memory slots.  Which it might not, as one way to save cost on cheap junk motherboards is to only have two memory slots.

Regardless, $80 for 8 GB is ridiculous.  You can get 8 GB for vastly cheaper than that:

Most likely, the memory that the computer came with should be the least of your friend's concerns unless it's outright defective.  If your friend wanted to salvage parts from the computer to build something nice, memory is probably the component second most likely to be useful, behind only the optical drive.

What is the problem that he's trying to address?  And how much memory did it come with?

Tell your friend to have a look at the motherboard, and write down as much writing on it as he can find, and report it here.  Motherboards often like to mark a ton of features on it.  In particular, have him check near the memory slots.

    For example, look here:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128478

Right next to the memory slots, it says:

    DDR3_1

    DDR3_2

    DDR3_3

    DDR3_4

That tells you right there that it's DDR3 memory.  Between the PCI slots, it says "Dual Channel DDR3", which also says that it's DDR3 memory.

Elsewhere, it says "LGA1155" and "Socket 1155", and the processor socket also tells you that it's DDR3 memory.  It also says GA-P67A-UD4-B3, which tells you the motherboard model, and that would let one look it up and find that it's DDR3.

Of course, it also says a lot of other things that wouldn't tell you the memory type.  But my point is, motherboards sometimes like to advertise their features by writing them on the board, and that could say what he needs.

I can't imagine a new PC coming with less than 4GB of ram, if he has 4GB he should not have any need to add more.
