A look at Warhammer: Wrath of Heroes

Finally read through all the blogs, twitter and facebook information. Lots of little tidbits I put out there that I found unique between the blogs and overall unmentioned. Now for my take on it overall..

Blunt and Honest: It looks like they're taking everything they did WRONG with WAR and fixing that with WoH. 3 factions, continuous action, better balance, better grouping, no gear gaps/levelgaps, no empty tiers, no horrible NPC AI, etc.

My take on what this means for WAR:

While there are extremists on both sides of the spectrum for this, either being a "this will kill WAR!" hater or a "This will be a surefire resurrection for WAR with absolutely no downsides!" fanboi, I remain in the middle ground where I think most people generally are, which is..

Hesitant Anticipation.

The reason I say this is for many reasons.

First of all, the obvious..Theres a new Warhammer IP game to play, yay! No matter what, I think all Warhammer IP fans can enjoy that. However, some won't like the lore-tossed-out-the-window faction mixup and others won't like the scenario play, but still, it seems like it will be fun.

Second, Promotion -- We've been asking for advertising for ages, now this is our route for advertising. I can see giant banners on every WoH website along the lines of "Want more WAAAGH? Play Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning and try out our ORvR Campaign while enjoying the bonuses in WoH for subscribing to WAR."

Third, New Content -- Another thing we've been asking for. And with this whole crossover-synergy they supposedly have going between WAR and WoH, I can see more stuff coming to WAR.

Now comes the Hesitation..

First, this is Mythic. I cannot ignore the past and that time and time again, with their sales pitch, it always fell short of what was produced. Will any of the above actually happen? Who knows. Atleast most people will be able to relent that if WAR goes under, atleast WoH can feed their Warhammer craving until WAR40K.

Second, any new game, especially a Warhammer Game is going to detract from the WAR population (as most people only still play WAR for the IP or the PVP which WoH will have both), if even only temporarily. If people are busy playing WoH, whos going to be playing WAR? Especially given that it will be F2P. I feel this will cause a drop in WAR population at WoH's launch with the possibility to cause more people to leave from further population decline, even if in the long run, WoH manages to bring people back to WAR (for some reason unknown yet).

Third, the whole "WAR subscribers will have bonuses in WoH" doesn't seem like it will do anything to get people to play WAR itself, only pull more WAR players to WoH, or possibly have WoH players sign up for WAR to get the bonuses but never actually play WAR....which I guess is all EA cares about at this point. WAR needs to offer something to WoH players that will draw them to WAR, not lesser 2faction version SCs and a broken ORVR campaign with far more balance issues and timesinks. I just dont see the point where WAR will draw from WoH, only the other way around.

Forth, new content... While WAR may see new content, I fear that it will only be content that will be designed directly for WoH and if it JUST SO HAPPENS to be able to be fitted into WAR, eh why not, toss it in. I don't feel WAR will receive any new exclusive content that is actually designed for WAR, only things made for WoH that can be ported over.

Fifth, as everyone else has said... What will happen to WAR's SC system? Who will want to play WAR's SCs with its 2faction, queue problematic, balance failed, etc when you can just play WoH? How will people be able to get SC Weapons if everyone stops playing SCs in WAR for WoH? What will be done to make the ORVR worth paying the subscription (being the only thing remaining in WAR since PVE has been forgotten and SCs will become obsolete)?

I do see the potential for WoH to help WAR, but I think the underlying reality is that it is simply going to be a slow. subtle(or not so subtle?) merger from WAR -> WoH.

I'm hoping they will somehow have reasons for people playing WoH to want to go to WAR. This could, bring a good amount of players into WAR if they do it right. Do it wrong and they could be worse off than they were before. At least in the WAR "actual" population.

I could be way wrong, but is this going to be the first 3rd person MMO style MOBA? Cause... thats what it sounds like.

It is 'MMO' combat - action button hot bars, targeted aiming, etc. I signed up for the beta. I think I could actually compete in that style of combat. :-)

Well yeah thats why I said MMO style. Its a fixed "Multiplayer Online Battle Arena". You pick a dif character each time. There is no individual customization of skills, class, race, its just fixed on what you pick. Its more like a MOBA then a MMO from what I've been reading. Though I've not goten all the details.

In a MMO you run around as a individual character. Not a scenario character.  MMO's and MOBA do share some things in commen. Like some have lvls, items, skills. But in a MOBA these are limited. Most of all, its not continuous in a MOBA. After the battle is over, you don't keep any lvls items you may have gained. If I got this right, thats what this is going to be. Just a MMO style MOBA. And if its not, I'm sorry. Though I don't see why no one has yet to make a MOBA like this. Its not like a MOBA must be top down RTS style.

Bloodline champions is close to that. It's still sorta top down, but not nearly as much as other mobas.

They basically tossed all pretense of following the GW lore. Any character can join with any so you could have Elves and dark elves on the same team.

Instead of creating a new game that works within the framework of the lore they merely took stuff from war and put this together.

It will probably get a million players the first week. This seems to be a style of game with a large following, and it's changing things up a little bit on the current MOBA combat with MMO style combat.
