SWTOR wins Best Online Game at Gamerscom 2011

I dont think this has been posted, but impressive?  Sounds like it. http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/17/gamescom-2011-swtor-wins-best-online-game-and-introduces-huttba/

As one that is anticipating this title, Im not really anticipating more timed lobby-system shoe-box claustrophobic PvP match content.  But it appears that they introduced new PvP arena content and it helps get attention.

I need to look to see if there is any more reveal about more open-world organic non-scripted community-centric and massively-multiplayer content, but this is what I found so far, and I'm not disappointed in "it" in particular per-se, but was hoping for more....I'll continue reading other news reports to see.

personally i doubt they will have any real big pvp reveals at games com.  i think they are saving those for pax since they will have one of their big panels(assuming of course that they still intend to give us info like they said at comic con).  big problem i see with that though is their show is scheduled for sunday so no one gets to ask any real questions about it in interviews.

    Best 'online' game?

Doubt it, but seeing as GW2 was ineligible due to winning last year my own vote would have been to BF3. I would usually go with the MMO in this instance since it tends to retain a lot more actual online playing hours and is more suited to an online environment as a whole than a FPS game but between the lack of progress SWTOR brings (other than one thing that has been beaten to death in at least 5 games major games since 2007/2008) to the table and the complete jaw dropping awesomeness that is BF3 I just can't not vote for in my own mind, hell it would have even given GW2 a bloody good run for it's money.

Before i seen the gamescon stuff I was well pumped for BF3 but after seeing the 64 player map today I just wish DICE and EA would take my wallet from me right now rather than in October.

Yeah that's cool, they will all be successfull in different ways I think. But in terms of 'best online game' BF3 comes out well ahead of SWTOR for me, personally. Again, todays revealed stuff just sealed the deal... take my money already, damnit!

    @ Ragnaven

They won very convincingly last year, what makes you think the decision would have been reversed this year given that GW2 was showing what was probably the most anticipated feature so far and seems to be being recieved very well?

I've actually been looking forward to GW2 now for a while until I started really researching it last week.  Needs a LOT of improvement before I will be interested in spending money on it.

Anyways, since this thread is supposed to be about Star Wars, I have to say I continue to be impressed by it.  That new Battleground looked fun too.  Hopefully we can see it in english soon.

Here is a list of the other MMO's that were at GameCon, not all of 'em were demoning, and some just had trailers or reveals:

    Taken from a Massively Article

    Guild Wars 2

Hot off of Guild Wars 2's Sylvari Week, ArenaNet will be setting up shop in the NCsoft booth to shine a big ol' spotlight on its upcoming title. The studio has plans for a full weekend's worth of Q&A sessions, contests, and demos to get the crowd worked up about this promising MMO. It's here that players will be able to tinker with the game's character customization features for the first time.

In addition to the demos and panels, the Electronic Sports League will be hosting public Guild Wars 2 PvP matches in its arena. The devs are expected to mix it up in there as well, so this could be an excellent choice for those curious about how PvP functions in the game for real instead of in theory.

    Star Wars: The Old Republic

The buzz word for SWTOR at Gamescom is "endgame." Selected community members will be able to check out the title's PvP action in the high-level Alderaan warzone, while the fabled Eternity Vault will be showcased by BioWare staff for all to see. Additionally, anyone who manages to get close enough to the booth (Jedi mind tricks are encouraged) can partake in a hands-on demo of the highly anticipated title.

With The Old Republic launching "holiday 2011," it's no small understatement to say that the public interest in this title is reaching a fever pitch, and millions of eyes will be combing through everything shown, revealed, and discussed this weekend. Some players have expressed concern that the game would launch with a skimpy endgame, a perception that BioWare obviously wants to change with the focus of this convention.

    Carbine Studios' mystery MMO

Speculation is swirling around NCsoft's Carbine Studios, which is set to announce its new MMO at the show. We know very little about the project, apart from the fact that it's being supervised by MMO industry veteran Jeremy Gaffney, that it's presumably fantasy-themed (based on released concept art), and that the studio has been working to make "games that adapt to you, instead of the other way around."

The announcement should happen the minute the doors open at Gamescom, so attendees have the chance to be the first in the world to lay eyes on this future title.

    Firefall

Our last hot ticket may not be considered a "proper MMO" by all, but it's certainly become one of the the biggest massively multiplayer games to watch. Developed by Blizzard alums at Red 5 Studios, Firefall looks to meld the fast-paced action of team-based FPS shooters with a cool sci-fi setting and a persistent world. Considering that it's going to be releasing this December, we have many questions for Red 5 and are looking forward to the opportunity to get a closer look this week. Lucky players will get to play the game demo, including "intense" co-op missions.

Strap on your walking shoes if you're going to Gamescom because the impressive list of exhibitors will have you questing all over the place!

•Funcom (Hall 6, C61): The company will be showing a 20-minute demo of The Secret World's dungeons in a closed auditorium for those 16 years and older as well as and talking to the press about the game's PvP.
•gamigo (Hall 6, A53): The free-to-play publisher has a slew of upcoming titles to promote, including Jagged Alliance Online, UFO Online, and the world premiere of Grimlands.
•Trion Worlds (Hall 9, A21, B20): While RIFT has proven to be a major success this year, Trion will be sharing RIFT's spotlight with End of Nations (especially after its recent free-to-play reveal) and Defiance.
•Valve (Hall 7, B50, A51): Not only will Valve show Defense of the Ancients 2 for the first time at Gamescom, but it will be hosting a DotA 2 tournament with a top prize of $1 million.
•Hi-Rez Studios (Hall 4, C19): In addition to hosting Global Agenda, Hi-Rez will be showing a demo version of Tribes: Ascend as well as revealing its MOBA SMITE.
•Nexon (Hall 9, B20, C21): In preparation for its European release later this year, Vindictus will be on display.
•Wargaming.net (Hall 9, A14, A33, B32): Can lightning strike twice? We'll see, as Wargaming.net is unveiling World of Warplanes as its follow-up to its mega-successful World of Tanks.
•NHN (Hall 4, D14): It'll be interesting to see what an MMO looks like when powered by the CryEngine3, but unfortunately NHN will only be showing ASTA in the business area.
•GamersFirst (Hall 9, A10): The company will be throwing a free-to-play party to celebrate the success of that business model in titles such as its revamped All Points Bulletin.
•Turbine (Hall 8, C20, B21): Turbine will be crowing about Rise of Isengard, and word is that visitors will be able to get their hands on spiffy new White Hand buttons to celebrate the expansion.
•gPotato (Hall 9, C40): Not only will the busy publisher be showing off its upcoming Age of Wulin and many other established titles, but rumor has it that it will be announcing yet another MMO at the show.
•Activision Blizzard (Hall 6, B21, C30): Blizzard's full line-up, including World of Warcraft, will be on display, and the studio has a full stage schedule with contests, demonstrations, and interviews planned.
    •Electronic Arts (Hall 6, B53, B60, B61, B70, B80, A70, A80, C61)
    •Frogster (Hall 8, B40, B48 and Hall 9, B10, C10)
    •Red 5 Studios (Hall 9, B41)
    •NCsoft (Hall 9, A11)

mainly because TOR has constantly improved in graphics, gameplay, and features. They showed off a lot of stuff in the last months, and added more. Where GW2 looks the same to me as it did the first time I looked at it.

Yea .. none of those look very impressive aside from some that have probably won before and weren't eligible. We are hopefully coming to the end of the driest spells in the history of MMOs .. not a huge victory imo.

How useless can they possibly make these rankings and awards?

Diablo 3 apparently got "Best PC Game"

This game is a PC game that got "Best Online Game"

Did they give out an award "Best Game"

or "Best Game that Plays like a Game"

    Maybe "Best PC Online Game"

Not being skeptical, just curious and all.

A few different places here and there.

No insider knowledge or anything but basing it mostly off of what I seen online and seen from friends and other folk I know both online and in rl. I know quite a bit of differing people when it comes to what they know about upcoming games so that's sometimes refreshing to get the chance to see what they think of games on the face of it. Some of my friends keep themselves well up to date and the others only hear little bits and pieces. Some people prefer WoW, some prefer EVE or something like Mass Effect etc. I also considered what I had learned personally while looking into it. (I was a lot more unbias a year ago initially when it came to gw2/tor/whatever since I was in the midst of playing a MMO anyway and hadn't really decided one way or the other for any upcoming titles). These days I don't mind saying that I'm looking forward to GW2 more because I believe it is pushing the genre as a whole forward more so than any other game that seems to be on the radar just now. ArcheAge looks nice as well and I might dabble with that but I'm not entirely convinced of it's longevity yet. I might very well pick up SWTOR as well, it depends on what's happening at the time, but I don't think it will hold my interest for long.

But yeah, from what I seen almost every single person who I talked with who knew similar amounts about both games pretty much agreed that while SWTOR will be quite cool it doesn't quite match up to the attitude and change that is powering GW2. Everyones main concern seemed to be that they might not pull it off and all the feedback we are seeing from the demos seems to be saying that they are doing a grand job of it. Of course I did fill in gaps in things they didn't know or things they had wrong to the best of my knowledge. (We get a lot of quiet spells in my work as well so I usually get time to fire off emails with links to threads on mmorpg and other websites rather than try explain it on my own if I'm struggling to word or phrase things properly. It also lets me do a great deal of research into games I'm looking forward to or currently playing).

I'm by no means saying I'm of course 100% correct and really it should be taken with a grain of salt but I didn't see how TOR could match what GW2 was bringing to the table. If you are talking about popular game then that's a different kettle of fish entirely, but then again 'best' is subjective anyway.. When in doubt I tend to favour what I think will be best in the long term and for me GW2 comes out well ahead in what it is trying to achieve and since the last gamescon I don't think I've seen anything that changes my opinion on that.

Sorry for such a long post but now and then people take things the wrong way, I don't want to start trolling and flaming and stuff about the whole GW2/TOR thing that's going on, I'm just calling it as I see it.

So essentially you have no knowledge that it was a landslide win last year, and it is purely coincidence that you say it was a landslide because it matches your point of view.

    Gotcha.

By the way, did you hear that it was a complete landslide this year too? I mean, it was.

Dont take it the wrong way but other than me taking it on faith that "people you talked to", who likely arent the judges of the event (were they?) there really isnt a whole lot of credible sourcing to your statement it was a landslide win.

Good for SWTOR.  It won't be winning my "Best Subscription Award" though......lol.
