Recently analysts have projected that Bioware are looking at about 3 million box/download sales for SW:TOR with pre-orders for the game already far in excess of Starcraft 2 or World Of Warcraft: Cataclysm.
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2011-08-11-analysts-predict-3-million-sales-for-swtor
So we have a debating point here, since SW:TOR looks to have the numbers ready to break into WoW type numbers in terms of subs. Bioware will deliver a polished product may not be for everyone, but hard to see with huge sales likely how they can fail from here.
What does that mean for Blizzard? Maybe F2P, pay-for-premium patch content, cash shop, and cash-based auction house, with rapid patches of content to hold their players attention? Or will Blizzard let it decline and just focus on getting Titan out by end of 2012-early 2013?
Whichever side of the force you are on it certainly seems that as SW:TOR progress from beta to release later this year we are talking the next "BIG" mmo to land.

Why I don't think SW:TOR will kill WoW: China.
the further the term, "WoW killer" is from any game, the better. Its a myth, like compasion on the internet.
Im a tor fan and no. Wow cant be killed by other mmo's. Im sorry but the only thing gonna kill wow is blizzard with there bad expansions. I like alot of cata but are some major issues with it for me.
The truth is wow still has 11 million subs tor may take a few of those but the truth is no other game willl kill wow they have wayy to many subs and loyal ones at that who stay with it through thick and thin.
sure soem come and go but those people do that every expansion while some stay with wow no matter what. When u take in fact china is only on lk and they make up almost half of wows subs i dont see wow going anywhere anytime soon.
No.
Next pointless thread please?
Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy
lol again....??
wow....wowkiller.....wowclone.....
some seem to be just brainwashed by wow bad
get over it...
No, sales don't really factor into it from Blizzard's POV apart from most likely short-term player diversion because what actually matters is subscriber retention. WoW is one of the few MMOs out there who's active player base has increased over the years. If TOR aims to dethrone WoW, claim which could be debated in detail on its own, it needs to at least follow this trend as well.
Don't f!cking jinx it you bloke.
He who keeps his cool best wins.
Meh, this whole debate on killing WoW has been and always will be stupid. Just play the games you enjoy and stop worrying about sub numbers, cause in most MMOs, you can only closely play with 2-40 players at any given time, besides open world events that could have hundreds, but even then you're still not 'playing with' everyone, but rather along side them.
I do hope SW:TOR does good as its my current interest, and the same goes for GWII. Could even apply the same sentiment towards WoW, cause even though I don't really enjoy it all that much anymore, I don't wish it to suddenly die off for the millions still playing and enjoying it, and who knows, maybe I'd be willing to return again someday so having it as a popular option later on is good!
As for whatever Titan is, don't expect to see that one surface until 2014-2015, but I suspect we'll hear something about it at Blizzcon 2013.
Not without China and Korea.
I guess retention means people cancel their subscriptions and chinese hackers hack in and take them over. I guess that's retention.
In a word, NO.
Two primary reasons.
As of right now its still in pre-order. For all we know the game could come out and stink. Then its 3 million suckers who are dissatisfied with their purchase. In that case, WOW won't be dead.
Second New games never "kill" old games. Before WOW everyone talked about what would be the EQ Killer. WoW wasn't the EQ killer, but what WoW did do is change the paradigm of the industry. Pre-WOW, EQ was king with 500k subs. Post WoW, that number of subs looks like chump change. Whats really "killed" EQ compared to its heyday is simply time. Even then EQ is still going strong with many more servers than newer games have.
So, no, KOTOR will not be the WOW killer. NO GAME will Kill wow. There are two things that can kill it. Time and Poor design decisions. Time won't really kill it, but it may, in the end, dwindle the numbers to next to nothing. Design Decisions can KILL it.
So long, and thanks for all the fish!
The majority of WoW's subscriptions comes from China and they don't pay a monthly fee. They pay per hour and thus accounts are never actually canceled there, even if they don't play it.
do they? it seems that the last time i read their finance report most of the money came from the west.

As far as WOW killer, it wont be because of the TOR is that much better. The reason it could potentially "become" a WOW killer is because people wont have time to successfully live in both huge worlds. People that play TOR will enjoy it, so they may not have time for WOW. Wow's lore is a big deal, but generation upon generation have grown up with Star Wars being a part of media culture.

If they haven't paid in the last month they are also not counted.
Id be fine with WOW not dying, but just becoming another korean/eastern grindfest.....oh wait - it already is.

Sure buddy...
Just like soccer coming to the US is an "NFL Killer." And mobile phones are a "Desktop Killer." And Wendy's is a "McDonald's Killer."
Sigh.
'WoW killer' is such an inadequate and unrealistic term to use, for the simple reason that it can be interpreted in several ways making the discussion less constructive.
'WoW competitor' is a more fitting term, or 'WoW contestant' or 'WoW challenger'.
No MMO will truly be able to 'kill' WoW, but MMO's could be thus that they challenge or compete with WoW on a serious level.

Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
Didn't the past taught you guys something? The "WoW Killer" will be Blizzard itself well Chilton and Street combined with Activision are enough.
Also don't give a rats butt about analysts they know nothing about gaming. Will ToR sell well? Sure, does it have the tools to retain the huge base? Judging by what Ive seen so far, no.
I dont even think it will compete with it cause it has the same problem as Rift, they are way too similar. Story, story and story will not be the longtime solution.

"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play."
"Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
Exactly. Time after time after time we get this kind of thread, and they get really, really tiresome.
Let's wait until the game is released first, eh? THEN we can see how the game actually IS, rather than fall for the company hype. So many recent games promised to be 'The Next Big Thing' and they all turned out to be 'The Same Old Crap' tarted up with a bit of superficial eye candy. Players are finally beginning to wise up, which is why so many MMOs are admitting failure and going F2P to claw back some nickels and dimes.
It will be a WoW killer if it lives up to its hype.
I Pre-ordered and i'm super excited but for all i know it could be a bad game. I just hope that it lives up to its hype and manage to keep all subscribers and get even more over the year.
It looks really fun to play and the environments are absolutely stunning, it's the kind of game i could just sit and watch without doing anything for an hour.
where is the information to support your pre-order claim that SWTOR has already outsold WOW pre-orders ?
WOW Cataclysm on its FIRST DAY (which included preorders) sold 3.3 million
http://www.gamepro.com/article/news/217582/world-of-warcraft-cataclysm-enjoys-day-one-sales-of-3-3-million/
only info Ive seen about SWTOR preorders is this
http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/07/26/electronicarts-idUSN1E76P1X220110726
"We're well over 200,000 pre-orders in the first five or six days. From an EA perspective, that is significantly greater than any other EA title we've ever had in the first week," said the company's finance chief, Eric Brown, in an interview.

WOW is just an EQ clone anyway.
they took everything from almost every MMORPG excluding UO (oh what surprise) and dumbed it down.

Or the hater anti-hype?
The thread's pointless because it refers to the mythical wow-killer. Fifteen years of experience in MMOs teaches us over and over that there is no such thing as a "killer", and never has been. Yet, year after year they cling to the myth and rhetoric in thread after thread.
Regardless of which name you plug into the title, pick any one of fifty other titles, it will always be a pointless thread.
