Gamestop opens sealed game packages and removes free coupons:
Yesterday we reported that gamers who purchased a copy of “Deus Ex: Human Revolution” from retail outlets would receive a redemption code that could be used toward a copy of the same game on OnLive’s cloud gaming service.
Last night we began hearing reports that GameStop removed these codes from the games prior to selling them. At first it seemed as though it was just a bunch of people who didn’t like GameStop that were making these claims. However, this morning, evidence began to build, and many of our community members began reporting the same news.
We also received a copy of a letter that reported was sent out to GameStop employees on yesterday afternoon. In this letter, employees were asked to, “Please immediately remove and discard the On Live coupon from all regular PC versions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Our desire is to not have this coupon go to any customers after this announcement.” (letter can be seen below).
What could the reason be that GameStop requested the removal of these codes? Gamestop is set to release their own streaming game technology, which figures to compete directly with OnLive in the near future. The service which uses technology from Spawn Labs which is a company acquired by GameStop back in April, promises to stream games similarly to that of OnLive.
edit: oh...just see someone else did write about it already. Sorry, delete please.

Another reason why when I want a Retail Boxed copy of a game I go to Newegg
The thing is, that none physical copies is almost a ripp off aswell. You dont hold anything in your hands which you can sell later. They want to destroy the market for used games and make you dependant on online services...
Yep you are just paying for Pixels....The Kindle is another example of this,no paper,no logistics,no ink just digital DL material that you never really own and it's "Pennies on the dollar" to produce this and they want to charge full price for book DLs of a hardcopied book,They don't get my money.
Same here, I dont buy from Steam and support it except I use it if the game is free i.e. TFC2. Wheras as the business concept itself is quiete clever and profitable, its amazing how this concept did succeed so fast and so many are using it.
I did read about Onlive a bit, its a streaming service. The allegedly advantage is the avoidance of a console upgrade, they claim that you have to buy every 5-6 years a new console and this can be avoided with their service.
You have to pay a monthly fee for their service, around 15 $ a month...of course. And I bet they will lower or even offer free service when they have a higher number of customer. But at the moment it has a monthly fee and I dont see any advantage at all, except that you pay for something you really dont need.
I have bought from steam berfore but havent in the last year and a half because I came to the conclusion that you are really just renting for use and if the company ever went bankrupt you have nothing .Your games ,hundreds maybe thousands of dollars are gone for good, a lot of people dont realize this
edit* Don't anything about Online..I have pretty much moved back to retail boxed games, something that is tangible that I can hold in my hands and has the extras that you paid for and not getting with DL content like maps and a printed manual/game guide and maybe even nick nacks like posters
I think if Steam ever went bankrupt (not likely in the forseeable future given the amount of business they do) I would think their last patch would be one to remove the online reliance of the games they sell. I seriously doubt they would just shut down the service and leave everyone hanging as that would open the door for a whole slew of class-action lawsuits.
Edit: oh and about the topic... It doesn't surprise me in the least when Gamestop is involved. It's business practices like this that made me stop shopping there years ago. It's their own business practices that made me start using services like Steam and Direct-2-Drive.

If Steam ever had issues, a single line of code could easily update your whole library and turn off any need to log-in. Currently once a game is installed you don't even need to be connected to the internet anyway. In the freak chance Valve did go under, I couldn't imagine they wouldn't do that as a final thank you.
Nooooo!!! (((
Damit wanted one.
The Secret World
Simple, I have kindle and I download all the books in less legal way, specially for uni this is very good, instead of carrying 5x500pages books I carry my laptop+kindle and a notebook for notes, all fits in my laptop backpack.
"I am not a robot. I am a unicorn."
This is gonna hurt Gamestop for sure. Down with Gamestop!
