It's a strategy game with cute and interesting animal designs. The battle system is very basic and easy to understand, but it can still be difficult to win certain fights. While Pokemon is far from perfect, it is an excellent time-killer and a lot of fun to play. Also It's an interesting, simple RPG concept. The animals are intriguing, powerful, and boast a wide variety of abilities. It's not the typical medieval RPG. The "Gotta catch em all" concept gives a wide but not too overwhelming goal. You can trade with friends and it encourages interaction.
In my honest opinion, most "gun and shooting" games are boring. They're all the same.
The first reason why Pokemon is so popular is because of its mascot Pikachu. He is a little yellow creature that has the ability to control lightning. The only words he says are "Pika Pika". Many people find Pikachu adorable. He is like a teddy bear, and much fluffy merchandise has been made about Pikachu and other cute Pokemon. The cartoon is the second reason why Pokemon is so popular. The cartoon brought life into the world of Pokemon. Ash Ketchum is the main character of the cartoon. He is a young boy who wants to become the best trainer and his first Pokemon is Pikachu.
Correct me if i'm wrong but one interesting fact is that there is no pokemon clone.....shows how strong it is. I also wonder how it'll port to MMO, god forbid.
Where have you been? theres been plenty of pokemonesque games, the reason you dont see a down right clone is because theres nothing to the game, run around doing random battles and trainers with the cities named after trees and a bunch of stupid animals.
Correct ME if I'm wrong but didn't Dragon Quest put out a similar monster battle type game recently. I never played it, but I hear good things.
I didn't think it was still popular...but then, I'm an old fuddy duddy who was too old to get why folks liked them when they first came out. Now let me tell you how much fun it was when I was a kid playing with sticks...
It's a proven historical fact that beer saved humankind.

No no the cities are named after colors and its the professors that are named after trees, and then there are the animals.
I've been playing pokemon since before it released in the US and own at least one game from each gen. The games are fun. It is such a simple rpg yet you have so many options. Personally I hate using overpowered legendaries in my party so Im working on a team of Breloom, Crobat, Zoroark, Metagross, Lucario, and Lapras.
Bulbasaur is a reptilian creature that somewhat resembles a toad or a young dinosaur with a spotted blue-green hide. It has three white toes or claws growing out of its four legs. Its eyes are a bright red, but the most notable feature of this Pokémon is the onion-like bulb on its back. This bulb has a symbiotic relationship with the Pokémon, growing from a seed planted on its back by its mother at birth. Unlike the parasitic tochukaso mushrooms growing on the back of Paras, which eventually take over its body as it evolves into Parasect, Bulbasaur's bulb shares a symbiotic relationship that is beneficial for both. This allows Bulbasaur to get an enhanced boost of energy from the sun during the day and the bulb to remain growing and strong at night. The bulb also contains many seeds from which it draws nutrients.
Though they usually walk on four legs, a Bulbasaur can rise up on its hind legs. When it evolves into Ivysaur, the bulb becomes a larger flower bud, making it nearly impossible for one to rise on its hind legs.
No no the cities are named after colors and its the professors that are named after trees, and then there are the animals.

Ah Metagross... it's so tiring to be constantly fighting Metagross, along with every other pseudo-legendary and Lucario.
I wish they'd go back and rebalance the Pokemon. Lots and lots have been thrown to the side. It's gettting to the point where people can't deal with non cookie cutter teams because they don't know what the non-common Pokemon are. I played this one dude who got wrecked by my Nidoking because he could not for the life of him figure out his type.
I'm skipping Gen 5, and I'll probably skip the next ones as well unless they decide to go back and show the old ones some love. But I'm guessing doing something like this would probably upset the current metagame a lot, so it probably won't happen.
I think pokemon is popular due to its general patronage and appealing for kids of all ages. The stylish harmonious relationship between a pet friend and a owner doing their own adventure of a life time. It also have great color that people will be attracted to and don't you think pikachu works fine as the mascot of pokemon and how he talks nonsense all the time (Cute!!!!)
Pokemon is a simple game that you can play for a little while and then put down. The game system is portable which makes it handy when your on a trip or have a bit of free time at lunch from your job. Although simple, there are some complex aspects for those that are hard core (usually adults) in that you can cross breed pokemon and can get special moves. Uh... Don't ask why some crosses are possible and don't try to picture it. You'll just hurt your brain.
Pokemon is popular because it has the best PvP of any turn based RPG, and the collection/trading aspect lends to it a sense of community not found in many handheld games. In addition, there is an incredible level of complexity to competitive battling, so much so that to be considered "knowledgeable" at the game requires months of study and practice on all the aspects such as common sets, type matchups, proper breeding, prediction games, tiers, rulesets and more. Playing the game effectively requires many of the same skills as Poker- strong mathematical prowess, the ability to predict and bluff opponents, and being able to react to any situation in a decisive manner.
Historically it was popular because it was one of the first handheld titles on any system that wasn't complete garbage, and the ONLY worthwhile multiplayer game on the original Game Boy. Monumental titles tend to have a lot of staying power even decades into the future.
I think its because the game can just be mindless entertainment. You catch all these little crazy freaks of nature and have the beat the hell out of each other. It amuses me.=D
I'm sure the fact that the animation has a billion episodes helps with promotion too. Heh, and according to the cartoon they like beatin the heck outta each other. Kinda like a smaller version of Gladiator.
Oh god, I recall pokemon being the only thing in my childhood that completely consumed my attention for years. The game was revolutionary, addicting, and only game for th gameboy that was worth WAY more than the pricetag. Add to that the fact that all your friends in elementary school had it and you had a community built around it. I even collected all the trading cards later on, even though I had no interest in cards. Hell I even went to the North American pokemon championships where the top players got to challenge the execs from nintendo. (Nobody beat them, those japanese cheaters. :P )
Sadly I lost all interest in pokemon with the release of Silver/Gold, they added all those new pokemon that looked laughably bad. Packed up all my old pokemon stuff, put in in the attic and moved on with my life, by then most everyone I knew had anyway with us getting into middile school. Still it's actually a fond memory of my childhood, and I wouldn't change any of it if I could go back in time.
Now days I can't say why it's popular, perhaps I'm too old now to see it, but nowdays it just seems silly, and despite trying a few of te new ones, they just seem awful, and god are those new pokemon ugly as hell, guess the artists ran out of ideas.
To find an intelligent person in a PUG is not that rare, but to find a PUG made up of "all" intelligent people is one of the rarest phenomenons in the known universe.
Heh, you should see some of the pokemon in Black and White. They have a pokemon based off a bag of garbage. I mean WTH! I know they are hurtin for new ideas but sheesh. There are people dedicated to making fakemon on deviant art. You think they would hire one of them. Of course.... It could be a plot to put the worst pokemon in Black and White and save the cool ones for the 6th gen so that the next game can benefit from the upgraded Nintendo 3DS. Rope em in with cheesey pokemon in Black and White so you can shock and awe them later. Probably will go through a series of cheesy pokemon spinoffs before they get to 6th gen tho.
The Pokémon games have some cute, original creature designs, but beyond their cuddly forms. And unlike many other games that make the player start over with each new iteration, Pokémon (with one exception) allows players to transfer their previously caught creatures to the next title in the series. The exception occurred when the Game Boy transitioned to the Game Boy Advance -- the original cartridges were incompatible with the redesigned system, leaving no way to transfer Pokémon between Red/Blue and Gold/Silver over to Ruby/Sapphire. But Game Freak rectified its mistake with the fourth generation of DS titles: Diamond/Pearl provided the ability to transfer Pokémon from GBA to DS. But it's all another way to maintain the audience; when players feel that the Pokémon they catch today will still be viable party members in the next iteration of games, it encourages loyalty to the franchise.
When Pokemon was first made it was actually very good. As the seasons went on the show started to plumit. At first everyone loved the show but after a while it lost its touch. I guess the writers of Pokemon lost their creative abilities and their minds. The plot also got very prodictable Ash and friends set out on adventure, go to an event of some sort, team rocket causes havic, Ash and Pikachu save the day. Hello give us a break we don't want the same old crap over and over. This show is extremly boring and I don't reccomend that you watch it. After all these years I can't belive Pokemon is still airing. Like who is actually nerdy enough to still watch Pokemon. But I do have to admit that most of the Pokemon are adorable then again the names are really cheesey. I wonder why the Pokemon can only say one word. It gets very annoying when they say the same thing repeatedly. Over all this is a disgraceful show that I think should be put to an end.
The new show discontinued their contract with the company that provided the original voice actors. Thus all the major characters such as Jesse and James left. I believe the company was 4Kids and they provided the voice acting for like 145 episodes and some of the movies. A lot of the personality given to the characters of pokemon died when they switched to the new voice actors.

Because people have genuine fun playing the games? :P
Well, that's true for me anyway. I keep a Nidoking on my keychain just to remember my childhood. Good times were had.

Because its a commercial for collectable toys marketed at children.

I'd say it's the PVP mechanics. Even for people who don't particuarly like to duel other players, they'll do it and enjoy it.
Toss in trading, great mechanics, good visuals, a story worth telling.
It's the best pvp game you can play besides Chess.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
