Is Diablo 2 worth buying in 2011?

KanesterKanester Member UncommonPosts: 375

Hey guys, I've been having a break from MMO's and since I ended my WOW and Aion subscription I have had a blast playing some old games and games such as League of Legends, Starcraft and Mass Effect 2.

I've got my list of games ready to buy over the next few months and boy is it long. Diablo 3 has really caught my eye but I was wondering If Diablo 2 is worth buying? Just to get to grips with the whole Diablo thing. (I know I know, I've never played it!)..

Dirt cheep on ebay, Worth Buying or outdated in 2011?

Cheers Kane.

The graphics haven't really held up that well in my opinion, but the gameplay is still great.

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

I dont recomend it the grafik will make you disapointed, i reinstalled the game when i herd that diablo 3 was a fact and it looked crap it was not like the glory days when i played the game, so if you want to trye it dont spend more then 5 dollar on the game!

D2 is quite old now, I'd say buy Torchlight instead. Or maybe you could wait for Torchlight 2

No its just a shadow of its former self:

cartoony graphics no gothic feeling what so ever

    no custom stats

    no talent trees

    no horadrim cube

    no inventory tetris

    no boss runs

    no death penalty

    no necromancer

    no lan/solo mode

so basically its world of diablocraft

We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

i will dissagree with most posters higher

i would even recomend to get the combo pack at wal-mart or something for 9,99 and play them in order from begining to end.

    diablo 1

graphics outdated of course but gameplay still amazing lore is deep and you actually go down to the depths of hell to fight diablo himself. (dont worry i wont give spoilers)

    diablo 2

you keep following your hero from diablo 1 from another person's point of view and again (of course) you  go down to the depths of hell and fight diablo...

yes diablo 1 and 2 have very outdated graphics... but the gameplay, story, quests and lore are incredible... i still play diablo 2 and after some point i forget the shitty graphics. hell even diablo 1 is still good

then again i come from a generation of gamers that prefer a good gameplay with bad graphics than a bad gameplay with good graphics. my computer can run the cry2 engine without a hickup on max and i still think diablo 1 and 2 are great games to play nowadays. (less D1 than D2)

    recomendations for D1 (warrior class)

Recommendations for D2 (Druid (expansion) or amazon regular, easy mode with the barbarian))

Clearly you saw Torchlight 2 screenshots, please view some D3 screenshots

    no custom stats

    Please look up Runestones

    no talent trees

Please look up Active & Passive skills

    no horadrim cube

Please look up Nephalm cube & Artistans

    no inventory tetris

    Please look again

    no boss runs

Please look at the new difficulty settings, you can do boss runs but now it wont be the same boss over and over

    no death penalty

10% durability loss, there is also the knighmare mode ofc

    no necromancer

D3 is not D2 blizzard gave us new classes to play with

    no lan/solo mode

Looking at my calander it's 2011 not 1999 & their is solo play though you need to be online to play it but in 2011 that's not an issue for 99% of gamers.

so basically its world of diablocraft

    No it's D3 not a copy of D2.

You want D2.. well it's been released for some 12 years you can buy it from blizzard shop.

For those genuinly interested in D3 the last few days the offical website has exploded with class, skills and system information. http://www.diablo3.com, also check out youtube for 1080p video of the beta.

I have to agree with this post. When D1 & 2 came out i was out of my gaming phase and too busy with real life. I picked up D2 & the expansion cheap perhaps 3 or so years ago fully expecting to hate it with it being so old and outdated but i made myself stick with it for a couple of hours just to see what i'd missed out on and ended up completely addicted to the game.

It's old and ugly but very very addictive and fun. One of the only games to remind me why i loved the simplistic games when i was a kid playing on systems like Amstrad CPC464's and that grpahics don't make the game.

I recommend getting the patch to increase the screen resolution  before playing it though. It won't make the game look any better but on todays monitor sizes an 800 x 600 window is tiny and a little off putting. If you end up liking the game then I highly recommend trying out Baldur's Gate if you haven't already.

Sorry but you are clueless in some ways.

Runes aren't doing what custom stats did back in Diablo same with active passive skills, thanks.

Diablo 3 is not a MMORPG so I should be able to play offline, period.

Sorry but you are clueless in some ways.

Good to see you agree on most of my points

Runes aren't doing what custom stats did back in Diablo same with active passive skills, thanks.

Yes you're right they do much more, Whoopie'fing'so i can increase my dexterity by 3 points (D2), in D3 I can slot a Rune and change how this skill works,  If I don't like the skills I have chosen I don't need to respec I just swap out my passive and active skills, slot in different runes.. hey presto a new build... so much more choice in D3, please look it up don't assume cus you dont need to balance 5 or so stats it some how reduces choice or builds.

Just for example take the wizards actve skills (29 of them)  http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/class/wizard/active/ see how they change based on what rune you use, (skills unlock as you level up).  Effectivly you have over 120+ skills for the wizard at top level  add on top the 20 passive skills.

And bare in mind at any one time you can only have 6 active and 3 passive skills active, thats a huge amount of choice and builds.

Runes, Passive/Active skills replace the talent tree/stats system of D2 - choice/builds have not been removed in any way.  again D3 is not D2.

Diablo 3 is not a MMORPG so I should be able to play offline, period.

Blizzard choice to stop bots, hacks, piracy etc but come on it's 2011, get broadband and get used to it in 2-3 years it's going to be the norm.

Diablo 2 is still a good game but you really need the resolution patch. Baal and Diablo runs are fun

Yes.  Snag the battlechest.  Necromancer corpse-explosion in the bug lair is well worth the money.

Diablo 1 & 2 are still pretty decent games themselves.  However, I would NEVER pay the price a bunch of stores charge for the games still.  I've seen them range $30-50 USD, namely for the D2 collection.  This 10+ year old game is not worth that.

If you can find them cheap, then it's worth a look.

We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." Watch a gameplay video of it on youtube, if the quality and gameplay looks great in your eyes, then yes.  purchase the

    Diablo Battle Chest Box Set

There's also a game called Path of Exile, it's in Closed Beta which anyone can sign up for and everyone that's register get a chance to get a beta key sent to them. The site has a random member generator and every 20 to 30minutes a member gets a beta key... This is an upcomig  F2P Action RPG, it looks like Diablo 2.5 modified to the extreme. I would even watch a video gameplay of this game as well. The game is set to release at the beginning of next year.
