Seriously, those who think this way have not played a quality Asian MMO where you have to PAY-TO-PLAY rather only played the poor quality FREE-TO-PLAY.
It's absurd to compare a F2P Asian MMO to a P2P Western MMO....it's simply stupid.
Quality MMOs are P2P regardless of who makes them, western, eastern, doesn't matter. The only MMO that is attempting to break this mold is GW2 and we still have to see it to believe it.
There is much I find admirable about Asian culture, but that does not include their games. I find them shalow and childish and a waste of time. I wish MMORPG would put country of orign in their games list, and save us all some time.
I couldn't have said it better myself: They need to CLEARLY LABEL what country the developers are working from so I can just pass up the piece of garbage rather than waste my time finding out after spending money.

*EDIT: typo
Quality pay to play MMO, eh? Like RF Online was? Anyone who argues the quality of an asian game is either a gold farmer or asian.
I love them, great graphics, more challenging and overall just better.
Only thing I really hate with my deep soul are "westernizations" of asian games I prefer Asian MMORPGs cause they aren't as dumbed down as western games if people can't stand them go play one of the thousand western easymode games.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play." "Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.
When your head is stuck in the sand, your ass becomes the only recognizable part of you.
No game is more fun than the one you can't play, and no game is more boring than one which you've become familiar.
How to become a millionaire: Start with a billion dollars and make an MMO.
I do not know much about every Asian MMORPG but FFXI is clearly one of my favourite games. It was amazing when I played it but that was years ago. Since then I think I have only tried Aion and that was not a in the same class. Just like Western games Asian games have their good and bad too.

Personally, I've never considered FFXI or any FF game "asian". They are Japanese. Differerent culture and mindset there. Love Japan. Loved FFXI too, my first "real" mmorpg.
Asian games usually are bad but do also carry a couple gimmicks that i like.I also feel they may stay true to the class system, where as over here people are crying for a mess of everyone can do everything.
Asian games imo even the good ones ,lack over all depth, everything as we see in Wow,just waddle from quest marker to quest marker.Asian games tend to be more geared towards pvp and item malls, this is why their pve part of the game is so lacking.I think if anything we can see how Wow copied most of Asian gaming, with the quest markers over npc heads, simple linear questing pattern all leading to some pvp. There is really only once difference tand that is the way UI are setup in Asian games when compared to over here.Other than that mmorpg gamign is played pretty much the exact same way in every game.
I sort of liked the concept that RFO had where the pvp was a timed event, not just open random killing. It also had a purpose which was to control the best mining spot, however a heck of a lot more could be done with that one trick pony.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
No question the asian games are getting better, but they are still far behind most western games when it comes to content. Aion is a beautiful game, but as everyone knows a game that has pvp at it's heart suffers greatly with just two factions. Runes of Magic while nicely done cannot be played for free unless a person has an inordinate amount of time to devote to grinding, it is basically a pay to win game.
I have yet to see one with a cash shop that does not gouge you.
We won't know about the upcoming games like Archage or TERA until they are release, but they certainly have possibilities.
They should make an asian MMORPG with a western style game system. Like content, not f2p etc. Some have good art and skill effects and music which is good but still most of them are just crap games.

Haha you gotta be kidding me. That's like saying Spain isn't Western because they're Spanish.
As for the rest of this thread, most of you need to get a clear perspective on this issue, starting by setting some distance from the viewpoint of "us" and "them". The industry is the same, except in different regions. The cultures are distinct, yes, but we all play many of the same games without a problem, or have you ever had trouble understanding how a Korean game works? The basic design is pretty much the same, and the changes are structural but never basic. Following that simple fact, you can see that all MMORPGs walk very similar roads, varying in quality but tending toward sameness. The problem here, perhaps, is one of perspective, because there are a lot more Asian producers that work ten times faster than their Western counterparts and consequently there are a gazillion more games coming from the East. But if you think about it, proportionally the quality is very similar to that of Western games; there's but a few MMORPGs that a majority of us could agree are really worth anyone's time and money, with copycats of all natures filling in the blanks, be they cheap or expensive.
I don't have time to write anything longer to make a full argument, but if you all clear your head of prejudice, I believe you will see that the panorama is pretty much the same for both regions, and opinions in general about this boil down to prejudice first and taste second. With a lot more information I think this article would've been a great read and a great devil's advocate, but with so little research and so many vague statements it ends up saying pretty much nothing about the issue.
I just disagree that the NA makes more better games.
I think we are both fairly even in that respect.
We've made some crap fest mmorpgs too.
Examples of terrible games NA has made:
Free Realms
Evony (Don't really care what other's say, this game is not my definition of a success for mmos. Not to mention their extremely controversial add campaining methods and high the suspicians that the game is linked to a gold selling company. Link on this below if you want to know what I mean.)
Asheron's Call (It was great in it's time, but whoever used this example needs to rethink because this game is outdated and has an extremely low player base).
I can't think of any games at the time, but I'm just tyring to prove that we don't exactly make the best games either.
Also we can't really compare ourselves to Asia because they make way more mmorpgs than we do.
If we made as many as they did we would have way more bad mmorgs too.

Runes of Magic BAD
AION BAD
TERA Cant comment yet
ArcheAge potential Good
You forgot to put the "Mkay" at the end of the title.
The following statement is false
The previous statement is true
Asian mmo's feel cheaply made to me, unpolished, but maybe it's me.
Cant argue with that

I'm not one of those 'Buy American' people. I'm an adult who happens to have better taste in quality and story, and their games are aimed at children.
Yes, I play WoW.
Yes, I plan to switch to SW-TOR.

The art styles alone are enough to turn me away... I look forward to seeing more of archeage though
