Same as everyone else... is the game worth it?

Guild Wars Community,

Sup guys, it's simple... is this game still worth a buy?  I was dragged into WoW for years and got tired of it, went back to console gaming, but I really want to play a PC game.  My question is simple and I'm sure others have asked it and answered...

Is GW still worth a buy even now? I know GW2 is coming, but with the free online play, GW I feel will still keep the attention of people. I am looking for some good advice on this.  Suggestions are good too. I've been watching videos and looking at different things about this game and all of the reviews and videos have been really great so far, so I just want an opinion from another player.

Thanks guys,

GW is a decent game by most standards, even today. However, there are alot of people that complain about certain aspects so if any of these is a dealbreaker then don't bother.

1- instanced gameplay. You only interact with people in towns or by having them in your party.  You can take henchmen to fill your party if you prefer to solo

2- you can't jump, walk over cliffs or climb over obstacles

3- you character will only level to 20, then after that it's all about collecting skills to improve your characters build or builds

4- there is very little in regards to equipment progression. At level 20, you can purchase max level gear easily, and gear grind is solely for cosmetic or minor improvements.

If you don't mind any of these issues then Guild Wars is well worth the money, with a well done storyline and challenging gameplay.

If you  do head into GW grab Eye of the North with it.  It's an expansion of the original game and it does a great job of adding tons of level 20 content.

I've been trying to play it. I'm not sure I like it. For one, I feel the whole dual class thing is a neat idea but it makes my character feel like she has multiple personality disorder. For now, I'm a ranger that shoots fireballs. Seems to be working... ok... for the most part, but I feel like I'm doing it completely wrong. The game really drags on between the big campaign missions sometimes in my opinion. Like yesterday I did a mission where I had to walk for 15 minutes before I got to the goal, only to find out I had to walk some more. At least the scenery is kind of pretty.

Also, sometimes I just want to punch the monitor in frustration. I might be doing something wrong here but the henchmen/hero AI I've experienced so far is... well... retarded. Like I'm fighting this huge pack of mobs, and then one of my henchmen/heroes decides that it would be a neat-o idea to go aggro a bunch of other monsters. This is also the only RPG where I've been one-shotted by some random monster. And one time I was being spawn-camped by enemy AI. That was fun. They literally patrolled the resurrection shrine.

I want to like it but it just feels wrong. I think I'll finish the main campaigns just to experience the story, though.

Well the game is well worth the money

unless you don't like what the other poster said above, but honestly, you get the all the campaigns for like $30? or $40? with EOTN, Just skip one single player game and its well worth the price.

For your build go here. As for henchmen/heroes, i find heroes have a much better ai, but ya they are all a little retarded.

ps heroes can be flagged and told to either fight, guard or avoid combat.

Woah, thanks, didn't know a place like that existed. I'm looking at some pretty rad builds, but something they all seem to have in common is having elite skills. I don't have any elite skills. Should I just continue to use my sucky build until I can get my hands on some? I just got the Signet of Capture.

Also, for heroes, am I supposed to give them builds too? I've left their skills alone for the most part... this could explain why my party gets defeated so easily :( Yep, I'm an idiot.

EDIT: Also, I found a R/A build that seems interesting, but I don't have the skills needed to pull it off, since you apparently get them in Factions, and I'm on Nightfall. Can I somehow do the Factions storyline as well with my Nightfall character or do I have to make a new one?

Well, originally, henchman was just a way for Guild Wars to function without making player too dependant on others in order to advance in the game, but it seems like people were WAY too dependant on henchman to play the game.

For for getting one shot, I really don't see a problem with that. It just indicates that you are either overpowered by the opposing group, or you are just serverely underpowered/under level. I much rather a game that focus on dodging to survive, than taking damage like a retarded meathead.

Guild Wars was FAR FAR FAR from a perfect game, but it was worth the box price at least, and its different from the rest of the field.

Don't get me wrong, I don't regret buying it, I've already gotten more out of it than many games I've played that cost the same (or more).

Anyway, about getting one shot, I seem to have the worst luck. In one of the Nightfall campaign missions five-six archers fired at me simultaneously, and they were the same level as me, or maybe one level above, and that took me down before I could even react.

Maybe it's because I have such lousy armor. I haven't gotten any better equipment (except for my bow) since like level 7. I just can't seem to find where to purchase/craft better gear.

You are definately not the only one who have this kind of first experience with Guild Wars. Luckily you show some perseverance and you will beat the learning curve if you keep it up.

GW are in many ways different from a regular MMO. Some of the major differences have already hit you over the head:

Aggro is different in such a way that it basically destroys the "holy trinity" idea of tank+heal+dps. Monsters are not mindlessly  attacking a taunting and heavily armored tank. Instead they go for the softest target first. Low armor = easy kill = move on to next lowest armor etc. At level 7 in starter armor, your heroes probably have a higher armorrating than you so ofc. the rangers attacked you - And it worked didn't it? :-)

You need to treat your heroes just like your own character. Equip better weapons for them as you find them ingame, but insignias and runes for their armor etc. Whenever you get new skills or have the chance to buy some, remember your heroes and think about which skills would be an asset on them. Don't go overboard on healing: Use one hero as a healer/de-hexer and the other one as protection monk. A monk casting Aegis on the team could have saved you in your example. Damage prevention is in many ways more important than repairing with energy intensive heals.

Heroes like to spam skills until they run out of energy: Try to limit your healer-hero to 5 energy point skills!

Try to find a decent guild ingame - They will make the experience a lot better even if you do not group much.

We dont need casuals in our games!!! Errm... Well we DO need casuals to fund and populate our games - But the games should be all about "hardcore" because: We dont need casuals in our games!!!

Yes, yes, yes.  I never gave this game a serious look before about a month ago. I did the free trial and fell in love with it.  Granted...it's dated, so don't expect it to hold up to what's out today...but it's solid.  By the way, there are tons of new people playing GW1 now so there are plenty of people to group with.

I wouldn't say it's dated, unless graphics make up your world and even then GW1 is a good example of aesthetics trumping raw graphical power. Gameplay and design-wise it really isn't a typical MMO so there isn't much to genuinely compare it to these days because it's, to me personally at least, more reminiscent of Diablo (minus the hordes of enemies) than of other MMOs.
Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.

If you decide to purchase the game do some research on character builds ( another poster here posted a link) as well as where elite skills are. There are even links on armor and where you're able to get new stuff =)

IMO the game is a lot of fun. I don't play it every day but I do come back to it often. I haven't finished the campain for Factions yet nor EOTN.

;eyelolled,  That's pretty close to what I would of said regarding the game.   You have to look at the game as just an Online RPG and nothing else, it will play different then most MMO's out there and I found the gameplay and the zones in the game quite enjoyable.

You can download the game trial, I believe it's still  a 14 days or 10 hours of gameplay.

    Wildstar (2013) & Elder Scroll Online (2013)

    Playing: Diablo 3, WOW, Far Cry 3 & X-Com.

Enjoyed: WOW 5 1/2 yrs, LOTRO 3yrs, GW 1/2yr, DFO 1yr, EVE Online 3yrs, and Huxley (Beta).

Failed to impress: GW2 3months, Tera Online 6 months (best combat system in any MMO I've played) STO 1/4yr, Aion 1/2yr, AoC 1yr, CO, Fallen Earth, DDO, EQ2 1/2yr, WAR 1/2yr, Lineage 2 and FF XI 1/2yr, FF XIV.

I played guild wars for about a year when It first came out and thought it was one of the best PvP games of all time (along with shadow bane), the PvE is good and the story line is good you wont be killing 10 boars (I am looking at you LOTRO) but the real thrill comes when you hit your first arena at about level 8, and of course when you hit lvl 20 and can play much more involved PvP, after awhile I got tired and moved on but it is a game worth playing

These are relevant quality observations! (And yes I am about as much a GW loving fan as you can get.)

Most of us (GW veterans) consider 3 of the 4 points advantages as opposed to "issues" and even the jumping seems a little silly, all things considered :-)

BUT: If people expect Guild Wars to be a "smaller, but free" WoW or EQ they WILL walk away disappointed. Guild wars are something completely different and while a lot of people love, and repeatedly play the PvE part of GW, it is basically built with controlled & balanced PvP in mind.

While thinking PvE, let me just add point no. 5: The holy trinity of Tanking, healing + DPS does not work in Guild Wars. Monsters will go straight for your healers, then dispose of DPS in 2 hits and finally have your tank squealing like a piglet.

My biggest problem with all the "real" MMO's have been the gearbased PvP, amazingly stupid PvE mechanics + the need to keep subs going by enforcing "Way of the grind".

If gearbased grind and time>skill is what you are looking for in a game: Pay attention to what "eyelolled" said. You will probably not like GW and that is perfectly ok.

Yes. Great amount of content for the money. Fun gameplay and great graphics. But alot of the world is instanced and that is definitely different from some of the more popular MMORPGs. GW is a CORPG.

  • LurvLurv Member UncommonPosts: 409

I just can't get immersed into a world that has bounderies like invisible walls or the inability to jump off a random bridge into the water like Aion. But at least Aion has more going for it than GW. Like FFXI, its time for these servers to be shut down and put everything towards GW2. GW players are going to have to accept that GW won't be around forever. Devs will move on. Like 8 track cassets. Sure you might have enjoyed them. But times change to make way for new things. If an MMO has had at least a good 4 year run, then there should be no reason for people to complain. If GW2 is to be a success, I would prefer them to devote all of their time on it and pulling away from working on keeping GW going. Let's hope that isn't instanced as well. I kind of prefer 'WALKING' into a new zone instead of being transported or magically appearing there.

No offense to you GW lovers. But its time for an upgrade. At least you're getting a 2. Most decent MMOs won't get a sequel. That would be like Blizzard starting a new WoW. (Which they should)

Getting too old for this $&17!

This is really a tough question to answer, especially given your background in games.

I absolutely loved GW. I still play it, and enjoy it, however it is quite a bit different from other MMOs. For this reason it's hard to suggest it to people who might be used to other games, because you really need to approach it with an open mind. On top of that, the game plays quite a bit differently now, then when it first started. The entire thing can be soloed, and PvP atm is mostly arenas and guild matches. I tell you this, because if you want a real multiplayer experience, you are going to have to go through some effort to find a decent / active guild that will take you on. Most of the players have been playing it for years, and have most of what they want unlocked already.

The community is pretty friendly, but like I said they are usually doing stuff well beyond what you will be working on.

I'd say, unless you are pressed for cash, it's worth the buy. I think they are even having a special atm to get all the content for cheap, which makes it even better. Just don't go in expecting a game like WoW, or Rift, etc. A lot of the play time will be with henchmen or companions, for the PvP content.

This means NPC teamm8s to help you kill things.

This means looking online for skills that work well together (guides), and seeing what skills your team should have once you get good henchmen. This'll help you out while you are trying to get a feel for the game, as the sheer number of skills you can get, and their combinations can be overwhelming.

The controls also may feel a bit wierd, as they are different from pretty much any of the other MMOs out there. It plays more tactically, and less action-oriented. The game revolves a lot more around choosing the right targets with the right skills / choosing the right combinations of skills for the areas you are in.

    - Hope that helps, and I hope I didn't just confuse you more. It's a tough decision, unless you can spare the cash, then I'd just go for it.

If you're tight on cash, you have a number of good games coming out soon:

    Skyrim, BF3, TOR, etc..

First of all. A small live team that maintan gw1 is not part of gw2 team. If you follow ncsoft you'll notice that they don't shutdown their games. Lineage is so old, even Lineage 2, and they are still running. Guild Wars is their most succesfull game (+Aion), and if ever shall it be shut down, it will be among the last ones.
