Star Trek MMO

PonziniPonzini Member UncommonPosts: 534

Has anyone read the FAQs on the new Star Trek MMO?

Personally I dont like Star Trek to much but the game has some amazing ideas. Me and my friends have been saying for years that a game exactly like this would be awesome except I had hoped it would be focused more on PvP but time will tell.

If you havent read it then you should and tell me what u guys know about it image

Oh ya anyone know if there are screenshots yet?

In case no one knows what im talking about the FAQ page is here:

    http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/gaming/news/article/6632.html

Ok ill try to get everything im liking about this game so far!

    - This game is gonna focus more on the CHARACTERS not starships. Not everyone will own a ship infact it sounds like it will be hard to get one.

How many people will be on a starship?
Starship crew complements range from little more than bridge crews aboard small ships to hundreds of players aboard the larger vessels.

-That right there is just awesome the game says that you will need LARGE amounts of people to run large starships and each department (engineering, sick bay, bridge, etc.) will have to be run to work the ship.

What will starship combat be like?
Starship combat is slower and more strategic than ground combat; the Enterprise wasn't built to turn on a dime. It's more important to make good decisions than get a target into one's crosshairs. That said, the action can be furious and requires the contribution of all of the departments under the direction of an experienced captain.

-Ground combat on planets or when boarding ships will be fast FPS combat while starships will be slow and require lots of teamwork it sounds like.

    Will there be housing?
Yes. You will receive quarters wherever you are stationed. It will display your earned trophies and other decorations.

-There are suppose to be areas for you to have quarters on ships, planets, AND space stations. That is awesome.

Well I dont want to go on to much but the game sounds amazing to me. I only wish they would build the game from ground up for PVP and I would love to be able to take other players ships.

I also hope the graphics are decent image

Well we've already been talking about this in the rumors forum, but I dont think it'd hurt to repeat here.

Now, I'd like to say that I'm not a Star Trek fan. Didnt really like it. However, looking at the game itself, I'd be willing to live with the theme if the game actually comes out with the things listed in the FAQ. The housing model is amazing, with non-instanced housing on ships, or actual CREWS on ships, not you on one ship with your friends on their own ships. Also, I love FPS style combat in an MMO, so I'm liking this. There really isnt much with the FAQ I dont like so far. Only thing is we'll have to see what the game will really be like. If it turns out like expected, it's getting my subscription money.

dude sounds like it will become more of a cult game then anything else. Because if starship crews are really dependent on so many skills EX. engineering, tactician, transporter due. their could be at least 10 types of engineers. This i think is the main problem, because lets say ur main engineer gets sick or his wife has a baby etc. ur screwed for that whole combat. it seems like more time will be spent planning and gathering crew tehn doing anything combat related. BUt however this may not be the case thats just my first impression.

Second hasnt planetside proven that FPS combat does not work in this type of game. Thats just my opinion.

It says in the FAQ that if someone is missing an NPC will replace them just not as effective. If someone logs off they will be replaced.

So players won't be able to control their own personal ships like the can in EVE? Bummer, I was looking forward to that possible Star Trek experience. The thoughts of being a crew member and working with other players to operate a starship does sound intriguing and like a good idea, and actually fits Star Trek more than the former. I'll be keeping my eye on this one.

One good thing: we can play as Klingons. ::::01::

One bad thing: we can't play some of the other cool ST races (Ferangi, Romulans, or even the Gorn) ::::21::

Havent read up much on it, but frrom what you are all saying having to have an actual crew to run the ship sounds like good fun. Course I hope I dont end up in the engineer's chair, I would probably blow up the ship on accident.

It's a good day to beleive

Engineer sounds fun to me, but I like the idea of navigation myself. I can see everyone wanting to be tactical officers, security personel, or science officers. Medical crewmembers will probably be on high demand/low availability like most MMO's I bet.

I'm a Star Trek geek so I am eagerly awaiting this release and have been following it. However, the game is so unbelievably far from release and meaningful development that I'm not holding out on what they say at this point. I'm not saying that they don't have a clue as to the direction they want to take this game, but I am saying we can't realistically determine or discuss the details at this time.

It's all speculation and I hate reading/coming up with a great idea only to find out the game I envisioned is nothing like the game they made.I'm going in with no expectations at this point, only hopes.

Just like priests LOL. But I hope they move past those basic tank, damage dealer, healer, etc. cookie cutter types. A pilot doesn't fit into any of those roles.

Hmmm, well if its a "class" or "profession" type system then some would probably be:

    • Doctor
    • Medic
    • Security
    • Engineer
    • Pilot
    • some form of political officer

Just what I thought off the top of my head.

What about the Quark, Deanna Troi, Neelix types...would they fit in anywhere? Like negotiators I guess...

Thats why I threw in political officer. I probably should have kept it abit more broad. I wonder if they will have non federation players in the game? Like civilians that partipate somehow as well.

I wonder what races will be playable? I am going Klingon right now if they make that playable!

I'd pick a B'lanna type - half Klingon - half something else! Or Worf, Klingon but raised by something else!

  • ScarisScaris Member UncommonPosts: 5,332

Now what would be very sweet was if you could go romulan and have large space battles against the federation, ship to ship. BUT at the same time that could turn the game into yet another combat focused game and I am not sure I would like that. So I take it back!

Sounds cool to me. The fact that they have smaller ships also means smaller clans/crewes can be accomodated. I think the team play element will really set apart this game and make it interesting.

I wonder if aboard Klingon ships they'll allow PvP so you can beat the snot out of the captain and take over.

BAHAHA, OMG, that would rock! If your captain you gotta make sure to keep everyone straight or you may get ganked for command!

Quark would be a scoundrel or rougue, likely not employed by starfleet in any official manner, Deanna is ships councellor and prolly fit under medic somewere, she is a shrink after all. For Neelix we would have to come up with a new class alltogehter, lets call it, "annoyer" ?

Thats not bad, your idea on Troi, the medical profession would actually branch into specializations.

    Amen on the annoyer class!

Well You can control your own ship if your a captain. Most likely it would be a small one because the big ships dont sound easy to get. You can also act like you control one on the holodeck and pvp in there with it. image I wouldnt mind being a crew member because you can climb the ranks and one day be a captain to and get ur own ship.

When I think of an mmorpg being "new", "innovative" that's what I think of - something past just being able to kill x number of things. Actually role-playing different professions and moving up in different ways. As a medical officer I should not have to kill anything to "level". I just don't know how you'd put that in a format of a game - how would you move up the ranks? Save x many lives? I'm not sure - but it is fun to think about.
  • PonziniPonzini Member UncommonPosts: 534

You are suppose to be able to train in the holodeck and do away missions which then you will have to heal injured players and stuff. Not much is know about the game yet since it was just announced.

    Hopefully we will know soon.

the idea of clans doesnt sit well with me within starfleet, totally acceptable for the klingon empire tho

my biggest concern is exploration, thats what star trek was about ....i certainly hope combat is only a minor minor thing

  • tethratethra Member Posts: 3
If they do the game the right way it could be alot of fun.  I love the idea of having to need groups to run a ship, that prolly one of my favorite aspects of the whole thing.  I can't wait for screen shots just to see things like UI and what not.  I am also curious to see how they are doing the whole skill thing, obviously it would be better to have more than one engineer on board but when more than one is on players will need other skills so they can keep busy... I guess only time will tell though
  • PonziniPonzini Member UncommonPosts: 534

Ya I wish I had some more info on this game because even with the Star Trek theme I think it will be a big success if they keep it this way.

Even though graphics dont matter much to me I can usually tell how an MMO will do by looking at its graphics. Games with good graphics usually are good because they dont settle for second best on everything else. Games with crappy graphics tend to do crappy jobs on everything else (at least with my expierience).

I hope we get some screenshots soon
