made a game similar to SWG?
with all the talk recently about the closing of SWG in a few months it got me thinking.
the game itself, while buggy as all hell. had so much to offer. yes i am a "SWG veteran" but i am not one of those who only see the game thru rose colored glasses. I know its strengths. i know how it sucked.
BUT
with the seemingly endless line of people who loved pre-CE and HATED NGE, one would think some developer would try to capitolize on that by creating a game with similar features.
I dont want this to turn into yet another p"precu was the best game ever" or a "phuck snedley" thread.
I'm just honestly curious as to why it hasnt been attempted.
at the time it was what? the 2nd or 3rd most played game? behind EQ and maybe UO or lineage? and that is with it being a buggy, nerf this because we cant fix it mess.
to this day nobody talks more fondly of a game than people do about pre-cu. not the UO people, not the vanillia wow fanboys, not anyone.
why oh why has a studio not attempted to recreate some of the awesomeness that was a pre cu SWG?

Because you can't compete with nostalgia. If such a company did make a game along the lines of SWG as it used to be and about as good, then many of the early SWG fans that are the target audience would declare that isn't nearly as good as SWG was and refuse to play it. Not all would, of course. But games usually aren't as good as you remember them being.
You know how, if you discover that you're not allowed to do X, that sometimes makes you want to do X? Even if you had no interest in doing X before discovering that it wasn't allowed? That effect applies here, too. Part of why people want to play pre-NGE SWG (how's that for a mess of acronyms?) is that they can't.
Now, that's not all of the old SWG fanbase, of course. There are quite a few who loved the game then and would gladly play it again now, and would pay to play for years. But it's not as many as you think it was--and not nearly as large as the SWG playerbase was when NGE hit.
I will call my MMORPG Nostalgia so that nothing can compete with it!
