No Market? No thanks!

I recently went back to check out CoH after Freedom was released.  I actually resubscribed to the game not that long ago, but I ended up leaving again shortly after I realized that I couldn't really do much without buying the Going Rogue expansion, which I wasn't really up for buying.

So about the restrictions.

Restricted classes:  I loved my Mastermind, it was my favorite class in the game, period.  It's now restricted to me as a Premium player.  Well... alright, I can just try playing another class.

Restricted slots:  Getting 4 global slots as a premium player seems fine to me, it's actually more than I expected to get, so that's cool.

Purchasable content from the cash shop:  Seems cool, some new power sets, travel abilities, and costume parts available.  Might pick them up if I get back into the game, I figure.  If I level a new character and like them, I might also pick up the expansion when they hit cap.

However, this is where the "ok" ends.

When I came back, I had no idea that the market is restricted unless you buy a pass.  You can't sell-- well, ok, I could PROBABLY deal with that even if it will suck to vendor a Salvage that's worth 1 mil infamy.

The big problem is you can't even BUY without a pass.  What?  REALLY?  You can't buy off the Market without a pass?

Ok, I'm sorry guys, but this game isn't even F2P in that case.  Not in any way shape or form.  In a F2P game, generally you can play without spending (much) and still do alright, as long as you're not the competitive type.  I'm a casual player, and I can get along without being the 'best'.

However, you CANNOT play this game without the market.  The market will be your source for salvage, enhancements, respecs, etc.  It is also your source of currency, by selling rare Salvage etc.

Without access to the Market, what are you supposed to do about your Enhancements?  Hope you'll get all the Enhancements you need as drops?  Buy the terrible enhancements available from Vendors?  You'll be crushed in any instance that isn't easy-mode.

Seriously, if you're going to put a restriction on the Market, you might as well leave it as subscription only.  The market pass lasts for 30 days, a month basically, so you're going to end up paying a monthly fee anyway because you just can't go without market access, period.

I know, nobody likes people whining about having to buy things from the cash shop in a F2P model, but I think restricting the Market was unnecessary.  It will just turn people off the game.

How many reward tokens do you have?

Once you have earned 8 tokens, you'll permanently unlock the auction house.

Either drop some cash on some points or resubscribe.

As a note, subscribing gives you full and complete access to everything you would have had previously + Going Rogue.

Well, I feel like a heel now.

I guess I didn't really think about reward tokens... actually... I don't know if I have any or not, I don't really know much about the system.  I just assumed I got what I got and that's all I got.

So I can still participate in the reward for time spent in game system, or is it just dependant upon how long I played before and I'd have to be a VIP to gain more rewards?  How do I even tell what how many reward tokens I've already earned?

I'll have to check that out...

Wow, now I wish I had waited to resubscribe then.  Getting Going Rogue just for resubscribing would have been a good deal, and I probably would have just stayed subscribed in that case...  :P

If you ever bought a box for the game in the past you have at least one token.  Past that you'll have a token for every 3 months you played the game with a bonus for every year.  From here on out you get a token for every month you're a VIP and a token for every $15 you spend in the store (with a one-time bonus of a single token the first time you buy any number of points in the store).

You can look at the paragon rewards window to slot the tokens (or just see what you have) by clicking on the little button that has the laurels around the outside and three little stars.  On the character select screen there's one along the top right next to "unspent tokens: X".

Link to the Paragon Wiki entry for Paragon Rewards.

If you didn't know, if you were to subscribe now you'll still get access to all the Going Rogue content I believe.  You'll just lose access to it once you drop out of VIP status.  Still though, it's a nice way to get yourself a couple tokens if you're not in a terrible hurry.

To make a long story short, don't let the "limitations" deter you as they are honestly quite fair for a FTP game.

Reach out on this forum or the CoH forums, and someone will be happy to help answer questions.

The auction house is no big deal for me.  I have never used it yet.  I have been playing for many years too.

I have a few 50's and 40's.  I enjoy the game very much.  Guess I will check out the auction house and sell some of my salvage.  I am loaded with them...LOL

The only issue I have with this is that it isn't a F2P game.  The devs have been very clear on that.

The only thing I've really used WW for is the salvage used to get the extra costume slot. It's not 100 percent necessary for the game.
I do like making story arcs in the Architect system, so I'm a little disappointed there isn't the license for it like there was in Beta.

My issue is not being able to have a perma IO liscense, with over a year playing time, and most expansions (CoH CoV GR). I thought at the very least I deserved that.

I'm not really sure who decided where this line was made but I don't agree with where it was made. I am exactly halfway in the rewards going by the red bar on the side.

For me to get enjoyment, I have to alter my play style and create new characters. Since the only ones I played were my few lvl 50's that were IO'd or getting there. That was a big part of the game for me was just making the builds. I guess I can still enjoy the Mids editor........

You may not agree with where the line was made, but games are quite the financial undertaking.  If they gave everything for free right up front, how would they make money?  You can argue as much as you want about it, but they are offering a product or service at a particular price point.

You apparently desire said product/service enough to vent frustrations on the forums but not enough to actually purchase it.  This sucks for both you and Paragon Studios as that line is just a bit off for you.  Sadly, according to the market research that they would have done prior to launching Freedom, they must have found that the majority of players would purchase the license at this price point.

The license is only like $2 per month if you reconsider.  Hopefully you can find something else to keep you busy in game if you don't purchase the license :)

Lets agree to disagree, I have purchased their products/service for several years. In fact I have been a player since the beta in 04. Paying them off and on, when I could keep my subscriuption going. I do not want to get into how I feel about it in detail but. To me it kinda felt like a thanks for your help, but you didnt help enough kinda thing. I took that as an insult plain and simple...

I dont exactly agree with having perma market access being premium either, what am I to use the market for anyways. You dont get salvage drops, or invention drops. What I am gonna sell or buy my SO's at an inflated cost there when NPC's vendor them?

If it were possible to trade these liscenses around that would be great I would trade my AE perma one, for the IO. I was never a fan of AE and rarely used it as a customer. Dont plan on using it either. I feel these rewards should be more dynamic to cater to everyone, and not just the elite few who could pay a sub for x amount of time.

Of course I will express my feelings on any and all medium I can, I care about this game and I like it. It should continue to grow and prosper, but not at the cost of some players.  I do not expect for them to give everything away free, but if they can offer free GLOBAL access, they can change a few things around. If playing the game off and on since 04 doesnt spell loyalty then I dont know what does... It really concerns me that games now days seem to be evolving into more about making money then the fun factor.
