Anyone have some suggestions for someone who's just watched the mentioned movie and looiking for some more? I watched it 20 years ago a couple of times and just watched it again tonight after reading the comparisons of Avatar to it, I have to admit that i remembered not one single line from the movie and it was like watching it for the first time.
It was a good movie but won't go down as a favourite, any other suggestions of similar and hopefully better?

Similar in plot or time period or just good westerns?
Similar for the empathy if that makes sense.
"Answers.com definition of empathy: identification with and understanding of another's situation, feelings, and motives; the attribution of one's own feelings to an object; Sympathetic, sad concern for someone in misfortune. "

I would say Apocalypto, as you empathize with the lead character all the way to the very last scene. Here is a pretty awesome music video set to seens from it Apocalypto-Escape dont watch if you havn't seen movie yet as there are some spoilers, but I cant imagine there would be many that havnt seen the movie yet.
If you want something along the lines of the "world's longest drama movies", I would recommend Apocalypse Now, The Seven Samurai, or (obvious) Last of the Mohicans. That's like 9 hours of movie right there.
Seven Sam is like my fav of all time, and i'm not trying to be a pretentious ass when I say that. Saw it on KPBS a decade ago and it changed everything. They made a western take of it called The Magnificent Seven, same plot and outcome, just wild west. Never saw it, though.

Now Playing: Skyrim, Wurm Online, Tropico 4
Waiting On: GW2, TSW, Archeage, The Rapture
The Last of the Mohicans.
I've already watched Apocalypto and wasn't impresses with gibson, then again i wasn't impressed with Costners monotone narrative in Wolves either but still enjoyed the movies.
Of the ones you mentioned, i grew up on apocalypse now, and last of the mohicans i've watched a few times. I don't think i've seen the seven samurai though. Favourite of all time you say? Consider it watched tonight, and thanks for the suggestion.
For some more Samauri suggestions there is:
GOEMON for awesome story, has some over the top anime stylings but I still loved it.

Goemon is by the same guy who made Casshern if you have seen that and liked it you will like Goemon even more I think.
And for a more down to earth realistic one:
13 Assassins (2011) - Official Trailer [HD]
This one is kind of a modernized take of Seven Samauri/Magnificent 7 but not really protect the village theme but the nation from a corruptted authority type thing.
Wish to see a brilliant movie...check out Mongol.
Good one ^
Thought of a few more:
A Man Called Horse (and its sequel The Return of the Man Called Horse)
The Missing
Little Big Man
Jerimiah Johnson
Also outside of Westerns theres:
Braveheart
Rob Roy
The Patriot
Legends of the Fall
Can't believe no one has suggested The New World

You wish for long and boring movies? How about Roots?
If what you are asking for are movies where the protagonist somehow finds himself amongst those he considers his enemies or primitives, and then comes to appreciate them to the point of defending them (and I believe you are) then I have a few suggestions:
The Last Samurai - This one is recent enough that I bet you've seen it, but it's very similar to Avatar or Dances with Wolves.
Enemy Mine- This one would seem to unrelated, but it's exactly what you are lookin for. A Sci-Fi movie where a human pilot and an Alien pilot whose races are at war with each other crash land on an isolated planet and have to coexist. It's fairly popular as well, though much older, so you may have seen it as well. Either way, worth watching again if it has been awhile.
District 9 touches on this same thing if you haven't seen it yet.
American History X is a great movie that fits too.
Remember the Titans is also about race relations, but less one-sided.
Personally I love movies like this and enjoy as many as I can. I knows there are many more of them out there that I have seen and liked, but can't think of them just now.

It's the complete opposite view to dances with wolves.
Based on a story written by Rudyard Kipling and starring Sean Connery, Michael Caine, and Christopher Plummer.
Two old army buddies set out to an unknown region of the world with a 20 rifles and a simple plan to become the kings of the people living there.
Dances With Wolves II - How Costner Got His Groove Back
Maverick - Comical but same theme
"Henry Pool is here" and "Little Miss Sunshine" two very good under the radar drama/commedy type movies with powerfull endings.
