$US 305 New Gaming Rig

CorkCorkCorkCorkCorkCork Member Posts: 70

I am considering purchasing a brand new DIY computer that would cost me $US 305.

This computer will mostly be used to play Guild Wars 2 at the lowest graphical settings, and other MMOs with system requirements much lesser than today's computers.

Here are the specifications:

Intel Pentium Processor E5700 (Dual Core) (2M Cache, 3.00 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)

2GB RAM

500GB Storage

No graphics card

Windows XP

Is this a good buy ? I appreciate all helpful and useful comments on this !

If you want to do without a videocard look into something like the Intel Sandy Bridge which is a very good line of CPUs and has better than most integrated graphics built into the chip. Or the AMD Llano which is a decent CPU and has a better integrated graphics than Sandy Bridge but not quite as good processor.

Either way the build you have listed is worthless I would save up another $100-200 dollars and get a newer gen cpu with at least a modest videocard.

If you want PM me your budget and anyother relevent info and I will try to help you out with a decent build.

Skip it.  You can do a lot better for the money you can chat with a geek friend or wait for black Friday at wallyworld.

Edit: I am not even sure the system specified would play Guild Wars 2.  I don't think it has enough RAM.

For $305 you can get a way better computer than that.  I don't know where you found that, but it is terrible.

If you want a -good- computer, save up $200 more and you will have something that will be able to run Guild Wars 2 on the highest settings.

Just spent $350 on a motherboard, processor, ram, and graphics card.  Used my old power supply, old tower, and the HDs I already had.  Ran BF3 on the highest settings with max AA and filtering, and barely stuttered even in the most intensive fights.  I will soon be buying a new tower and new power supply, which will probably run me another $110-ish.

So for $500, you can get a beast of a computer that will last you several years if you're not the type to upgrade often.  Also, you are wasting money buying Windows XP.  64-bit Windows 7 is the only way to go on modern machines.  7 is designed to make the most out of modern technologies.  Although if you don't have access to a copy and have to actually purchase it, that's money that could be going toward better parts.  Still, even with buying it, you should be able to get a better machine than the one you listed.

Thanks so much for your feedback !

I'll probably pop down to my neighbourhood DIY computer store and see what other better DIY rigs I can purchase. I will also post the specs for the next DIY PC i would consider buying soon !

If you really want to go cheap, get a barebone kit and put in decent hardware.

PS.  I don't think you'll find a PC that will play any MMO released in the next 6 months for $300, even decently.

I would recommend Newegg it's really the best site to buy computer hardware and they have great deals and the reviews are quite helpful for novice builders.

Like one of the other post, wait for black friday if anything:) tons of deals all over. You could build a rig for cheap as all hell that day.

As a minimum you shoudl go quad core as most games now show that as a recommended spec.

I always try to avoid minimum specs, as that puts you too far behind the tech curve.

Sounds like he's looking at pre-built rigs in his local store *shudder*

Also, DIY means do-it-yourself.  Buying a pre-built computer not only doesn't qualify as DIY, but also costs far more than doing it yourself or getting a computer-savvy friend to help you put it together.
