Is it too late?

Hi guys,

Need a new MMO to play and was wondering if it's too 'late' to start playing WoW?

I know there's a fair amount of expansions and such so would it take too long to get through it all, would I be slaving away for a ridiculous amount of time because of the lack of lower players since it's late into the game?

I've been playing Final Fantasy XI for about four years but I feel it's time to switch to something new and FF XIV is terrible at this stage, Diablo 3 doesn't interest me and Guild Wars not too sure about.

But original question do you think it's too late for me to bother starting once I get a new desktop?

Appreciate all answers like 'never too late' or 'yes definitely' but can you give a reason maybe?

Thanks!

As long as you like pandas it isn't too late.;)

However you can probably start with your old desktop, even most ancient computer can run Wow, while some of the graphics have been updated, it is both well optimized and have rather old graphics.

WoW is still a good game, despite what the hypocritical haters suggest.  It's likely that since an expansion has been announced that the player population will begin to drop slightly as well as the activity of players in instances as it will be all but useless to grind out gear now that a higher level cap is on it's way.

If you are starting a new character, I'd suggest starting about 1mo to 2weeks before the expansion will hit if you are a casual player.  Not sure if you can start at lvl1 as a Pandaren, if you can, it might be worth waiting for the expansion.

I think they have a "play for free until 20" deal so you can feel free to test it out even though those levels will fly extremely fast.

No it's not too late, wow has a pretty healthy population. Just remember to look at the realm list and choose a realm that says either New Players (blue), High or Full realms. At minimum go to a Medium realm.

if I would suggest any game that isn't to late to try it's definetly WoW.

Best thing about the game and its popularity is there will always be someone around your level while you are leveling. It is a very alt friendly game so I wouldn't worry about it.

have fun playing the mmo millions have enjoyed you won't regret it.

It's not that I'm worried about my current desktop not running it, just new desktop in general and don't feel like installing/downloading it again onto the new one haha.

Ah I see, is there a lot of group/party activities needed for certain parts at low level and will I be generally stuck for ages or can I mostly do things on my own until I get higher?

    EDIT:

Possible to change realm after chosen or permanent choice?

There is plenty to do for a new player. When the new expansion arrives there will probably be a decent number of rerolls so there will be people out and about.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

That will be a while though, They announced the last expansion 1 1/2 years or so before it actually released.

It is possible they hurry a bit more with this one but I will never bet for Blizzard to hurry anything (The remade Diablo 2 3 times from scratch before actually releasing it, and worked on Diablo 3 since 2003).

In my book is the only MMO that it is too late to start with right now SWG.

My advice to OP is doing that free 20 level try first, and maybe do the same for another game that seems interesting and then choose the one that fits him best. A day or 2 in 2 games never hurt since it usually is free and it is always smart to not put all your eggs in the same basket.

With all the wow hate going on right now its easy to get the wrong impression of wow, but the fact is its still a solid and very enjoyable game. Starting out is great now with all the retooled starting areas and stuff, and you'll level quick anyways I wouldn't hesitate to recommend wow to new players, Its getting a lot of flak at the moment, but its still the tightest and best produced game on the market right now. If you're serious about starting give me a yell, I can set you up with some starter cash and gear.

I don't agree with that, but it is solid enough, a bad game would never have become that huge.

Still, smart players do a free trial before deciding anything, solid or not.

When I get my new desktop next week friday I'll make sure I get the trial and such and try it for 20 days or levels however long it was and let you all know. Thanks for the opinions!

I can respect you disagreeing, but which parts do you disagree with?

  • BarelyEinsteinBarelyEinstein Member UncommonPosts: 251

I totaly agree with the trial thing, its up to level 20 btw, its always good to try before you buy. I would however recommend using the recruit-a-friend system since it offers a bunch of benefits for both people. I'd love to refer you myself, but its totally up to you who you go with, if you have friends who play they would be a great choice.

I'm wondering - what would be "really healthy population" in your books?

wow is very solo friendly,  and if thats not for you theres always the dungeon finder which you can use to level to max if your a tank or healer

I think he means wow has a pretty, healthy population. =P

Won't have any problems population wise with starter zones or main cities and you can meet new people / alts there if you are just starting out or bring afew friends along etc. Outlands and Northrend seem a bit barron and can be boring without a guild. I got an offer in my email for free 7 days but have a feeling I won't be able to get back into it but hope you have fun with the 20 level trial. Should be enough time to know if you like it or not.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

  • teakboisteakbois Member Posts: 2,154

Definitely not too late.  If you solo and like questing its got by far the most entertaining leveling experience quest wise.  If you like to group once you hit level 15 with the dungeon finder you can get groups usually within 15 minutes as a dps, instant as a tank, and near intsant as a healer.

You can also do battlegrounds within 5 minutes, but that will be where being a newbie will be most noticable, as low level BGs are dominated by people with 'Bind on Account' weapons.

As far as server population, WoW is still the king of the genre in that department. No other game has servers as populated as WoW, as long as you dont pick the handfulof low pop PvP ones.   At 4 AM east only 2 of WoWs servers are low population.

op, do take note, without the expansion packs you can't play some of the race, and you can't play a darkknight due to the requirements of having a character at least at level 55.

either than that in a medium or above population servers you will always finds lots of players, either new like you or rerolling, so no worries

Its not too late to start playing . Also you wont have any knowlage of what the game was once like and how much better it once was . so you may find seeing it with fresh eyes that its enjoyable . If its not your first mmo and your a gamer that enjoys a bit of challenge it probably wont be something you'll enjoy for long .

Not to late at all, 3 weeks and you could get your first 85.

After that it's all about gearing up.

So one month and you'll be ready for the low end "end game" content =)

Come on in, you can play for free till 20.

I would NOT start playing now.  WOWs heyday has come and gone, the game you will see now is not the fun atmospheric, pvp, pve funfest that was Vanilla and BC, the game is dumbed down, and the fun has been literally sucked out of the game. It looks more like an asian grinder crossbred with WAR than what WOW was. If you want to play something similar to WOW at least play a new WOW ish game like TOR which you can get your feet wet early in and build lasting freindships. Honestly the older a game gets the more players all swell at max level cities. You wont get much commutity out of WOW these days.
