It's difficult to remember a lot of what happened in the gaming world prior to the 90's. During the tape drive years, we played the simple stuff that we could write ourselves; it wasn't until that 300baud modem opened up the world of telecomm that "Gaming" (as we define it) really got off the ground. The 80's were filled with 2-bit or 8-bit classic arcade games (put in another quarter bud) and bad console ports of same. Pong, Space Invaders, and Advent.exe, whoppie--amazing stuff.
King's Quest and the Ultima series, Wolfenstein3D, DOOM, SimCity, Mechwarrior, Warcraft, Quake, and the other 90s classics are (to me) where gaming was really born. We finally had decent media to distribute new games on, we had modems working up past 9600 baud, we had online services (GEnie, Compuserve, AOL) beginning to open up real multi-player experiences. And players were communicating, finally, instead of soloing a console port. "Gamer" got born in that moment.
And (fortunately) broadband was right around the corner.

yeah, those would have to be the ones that stand out the most. i'm sure i forgot some. and didn't mention several on Atari because i'm too lazy to research the names (submarine/shark/diver saving game - and the game with aliens that beam up humans over a city and you blow up the ships and stop the humans from going SPLAT on the ground)
Seeing some of these old classic games mentioned again really brings back fond memories of those old arcades from the 70s and 80s that just don't exist anymore. Galaga, Joust, Centipede, Afterburner (with full cockpit), Battle Zone, Defender, Zaxxon, Tron, Donkey Kong, Q-Bert, Gauntlet, Qix, Robotron, Hyper Olympics (the pencil trick was my saviour), Pole Position, Spy Hunter, Ms. Pac-Man, Ghosts'n'Goblins, Xevious, Karate Champ (FUUUULL POINT! - half point), Sinistar ... the list is endless. Seeing your initials displayed in the #1 spot for all to see. Knowing that next week you'll have to return and wrest it back from some faceless usurper who'd driven you from your throne. Stealing money from mom's purse once the allowance had run dry -- then getting caught. Good times.
If there was one thing I could pull back from my childhood, it would probably be those old arcades.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
