I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

It's difficult to remember a lot of what happened in the gaming world prior to the 90's.  During the tape drive years, we played the simple stuff that we could write ourselves; it wasn't until that 300baud modem opened up the world of telecomm that "Gaming" (as we define it) really got off the ground.  The 80's were filled with 2-bit or 8-bit classic arcade games (put in another quarter bud) and bad console ports of same.  Pong, Space Invaders, and Advent.exe, whoppie--amazing stuff.

King's Quest and the Ultima series, Wolfenstein3D, DOOM, SimCity, Mechwarrior, Warcraft, Quake, and the other 90s classics are (to me) where gaming was really born.  We finally had decent media to distribute new games on, we had modems working up past 9600 baud, we had online services (GEnie, Compuserve, AOL) beginning to open up real multi-player experiences.  And players were communicating, finally, instead of soloing a console port.  "Gamer" got born in that moment.

And (fortunately) broadband was right around the corner.

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

First Seven are most Influential & favorite in order, not just in being a gamer:

    1. Legend of Dragoon (PS1)

    2. Warcraft 3 & Xpac (PC)

    3. Spyro the Dragon Original 3 (PS1)

This Game is the worst game I've ever played, but it did influence me as a gamer, taught me early (10), not to look at just the cover, I loved cowboys. Oddly I got this game and LoD same christmas from my Aunt.

    1. Gunfighter: The Legend of Jesse James (PS1)

Just noticed Most of the list are games that are 5 years or older...need new loves in my life. Guess that's what happens when you mostly played MMO's in the last 5 years. PSVita will do it for me, PC and big console gaming just doesn't do it for me anymore.

I'm a bit of a one trick poney when it comes to gaming, that trick being RPGs.  I've played tons of other great games like the Metal Gear series, God of War, Prince of Persia, and Gears of War, but I wouldn't say any of them have really had a profound impact on me as a gamer.  Beginning with Pokemon and the Final Fantasy series, I've become an RPG gamer through and through.

Since all the below listed games are my most influential - and favorite - and equal, I'll start from my first game and work up to my latest. I'll just leave out the duds though. I'll put an asterik next to any game that was actually one I waited for via hype at the time and gauge my hype. I would like to add that no, I didn't leave anything out - this is a thought out, extremely nostalgic list that is in order of when I first beat these games.

    1. The Legend of Zelda (NES)

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.

I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.

Seeing some of these old classic games mentioned again really brings back fond memories of those old arcades from the 70s and 80s that just don't exist anymore.  Galaga, Joust, Centipede, Afterburner (with full cockpit), Battle Zone, Defender, Zaxxon, Tron, Donkey Kong, Q-Bert, Gauntlet, Qix, Robotron, Hyper Olympics (the pencil trick was my saviour), Pole Position, Spy Hunter, Ms. Pac-Man, Ghosts'n'Goblins, Xevious, Karate Champ (FUUUULL POINT! - half point), Sinistar ... the list is endless.  Seeing your initials displayed in the #1 spot for all to see.  Knowing that next week you'll have to return and wrest it back from some faceless usurper who'd driven you from your throne.  Stealing money from mom's purse once the allowance had run dry -- then getting caught.  Good times.

If there was one thing I could pull back from my childhood, it would probably be those old arcades.
