I just want to talk about the "button mashing".

You can button mash, but I don't think you will win too many fights.

Sure you are "clicking a lot" but there has to be a method to your clicking.

So many clicks do certain things and if you are just randomly clicking..

Click click hold... click hold... click click click...right click, both clicks... they all lead to different abilities that can do different things such as knock them up in the air, knock them back and what have you.

Sure there is a ton of clicking, and even mindless clicking sometimes when fighting mobs, but there has to eventually be a method to the madness in order to succeed.

    At least in my opinion.

Yeah..just mashing buttons without using mouse combos...tap..tap...hold...etc...won't keep you alive too long. I think it is fun ...like I did in beta but I feel I will never pay much...might buy the light powers but thats about it. I just don't know if F2P will save it despite busy queues for the PVE server (PC). I could only play a few times though since it went F2P because the servers were down alot.

  • spookydomspookydom Member UncommonPosts: 1,782

I am enjoying it........Well, when the servers stay up. Teathing problems aside, it's good clean fun. Love my character. I can say though that if I had payed £40 for it I don't think I would have been as impressed. This may be in time though, in my opinion,  one of the best f2p games out there. Can even see myself spending some money on it at some point. This depends on how I find it when the servers are more stable.

This is where I am glad that SOE was honest.  If you go to the FAQ and click on "What is DC Universe Online?" (http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/faq.vm) - they are honest about it:

"DC Universe™ Online is the only next-generation massively multiplayer online action game..."

Notice the word I underlined: action.  They did not state that it is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game.  I'm not sure they could understand the depth of my appreciation in that honesty.  Too many games claim that they are RPG games, when they are action games.  Sure, action games may be loaded up with some RPG elements - but they have a key difference in comparison to the traditional RPG.

Action Game/Action RPG - you are responsible for the actions.

Traditional RPG - you direct the actions.

In the Action Game, the character generally cannot do certain things unless you are able to accomplish certain feats of dexterity on your own (such as provided in the quote above).  In the Traditional RPG, you have full access to direct the character's actions without the need for such feats.

Action Game: tap click, hold click to use Power X.

Traditional RPG: click or use a keybind to activate Power X.

It is not simply a case of tapping and holding.  There is a timing to it.  There has to be a passage of time before the tap where you do nothing and there has to be a certain passage of time between the tap and the hold . . . or Power X does not happen.

As I said, I'm not sure they could understand the depth of my appreciation in that honesty.  I'm having a blast tooling around in the game.  It's not my preferred playstyle at all (I prefer CoH's playstyle), but SOE did not lie to me about.

I despise games that lie about it.  There are many that do - they claim they are a RPG or MMORPG, when they are just an action game.  They deceive and set false expectations.  It ruins the experience for me - an experience that may have been different if they simply had not lied about being a RPG when the game is an action game.

So thank you, SOE.  Thank you.

Overall I like it. It is truly more an action game, but that is nice compared to most MMOs out there...you feel a little more involved because your powers are really secondary bonus attacks, while you can continue to fight in interesting/unique ways without them.

That said, the one thing that noticed me right away and still sort of bugs me is the limitations on powers. There just isn't that many. THe best most obvious example of this is making a "Superman" character, without a doubt one of the most iconic DC heroes (if not the most...Superman vs Batman?) and your powerset is Ice? ICE? Granted I'm not sure what I would call Superman's powerset but it definitely wouldn't be Ice...that just seems silly.

I just go through the "inspired" by hero sets and realize how many of them use, say, "Gadgets". While I agree Batman, Lex Luthor, Green Arrow etc... all use some kind of "tech", I wouldn't lump them together. Looking through the two trees for Gadget powers it seems like it would be difficult to really differentiate yourself.

The other thing I noticed right away is I only see evidence of Metropolis and Gotham City as major world zones. Is that correct? Are there other large scale free roaming zones? (Assume from the "Hubs" for heroes and villains). I think they could stand to add some of those as well. Metropolis and Gotham City are big, don't get me wrong, but there could definitely be more open world exploration. If they wanted to go the city route maybe Star City?

To be honest its a alright MMO. I am glad I didnt purchase it, it looks and feels like a clone of city of heros. The pvp isnt nothing speical and all the missions seem the same. Over all it brings nothing new to the MMO world. Yet it is worth a try becuase its free, and I can honestly say it was a smart move to make this game Free-to-play on SOE part.

All in all, I'm still having difficult coming to terms with the arcade nature of the game.  It definitely feels like a game that was meant to be played with a controller rather than keyboard and mouse.

Tap, Regular, Hold... on a mouse, index finger - world of difference compared to doing it with a thumb.  Could just be that I've had well over thirty years of using my thumb in that way - while I've only had several hours trying to do that with the index finger.

The majority of the focus feels like it is on the Weapons side of combat rather than the Powers side as well.

I'm still toying around with different toons (I've never rerolled this much before) - trying to find one where I can actually play the game.

The thing that is standing out the most to me though, is that I'd rather that CoH just updated their graphics engine and that they added the option for three colors (not just the three color palette, but actually the option for three colors instead of two).  I'd probably resub to CoH if they did that...

I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to go Premium with DCUO or just walk away.

I've played quite a bit now over the past week, so here are my impressions:  This game is surprisingly entertaining.  The questing is embedded in enough story to not be entirely annoying, the voice acting is pretty good and sometimes the dialogue is even funny.  I still love the way the game 'handles'.  Running up walls and over buildings at blazing speeds, flying, and leap-gliding are all entertaining and usually combat has a nice feel to it.  Except the damn controller mobs.  Nevermind the players, controller mobs are an annoyance unto themselves.  But overall, it's fun.

However, on all of the many, many alt rerolls of various power/weapon combos I've tried, soloing gets tedious very early (think: level 8 early).  This is true even in open world, where you can help random people and vice versa and everyone gets credit. This is a game for highly social players.  Which means it's not really for me.  But it does have a surprising number of features I've been looking forward to in upcoming games.  I could get used to voice acting, story, and open world missions where players get to cooperate instead of compete to finish missions.

I'm finding this not nearly as bad as many of the reports I had read on this site.  You truly feel like a super hero unlike some other games (mainly CO).  Fast running and running up walls is incredibily fun.  The graphics are great and the polish is there.  The voice acting is great and the story isn't bad either.

The combat is fairly fun, although not much strategy involved.  And honestly as far as action MMO combat goes Dragon Nest has it perfect IMO.

Overall, I find this a fun occasional diversion.  It's possible that due to low expectatons I'm finding this more appealing than I would have if I had no info on it.  Although I'm finding myself playing more Dragon Nest than this.  I don't find this appealing enough to ever pay for it though.  Good choice to go ftp.

This game is truly horrible. It's everything I hate about console games rolled into one. Really didn't like it. Also really disappointed with the customization options, especially the amount of colours you could use. It seems to be quite buggy too, like when I was getting killed repeatedly trying to complete an open world mission as I couldn't harm the mobs I was attacking. I tried attacking other mobs thinking they might be linked somehow, but couldn't do damage to them either. After a while I went elsewhere, only to find everywhere I went, I couldn't harm anything. Nice bug! A combat game where you get a bug that doesn't allow you to damage anything. Jeez..

I can't see me playing this again, even with it being free. All I can say is I'm glad I never gave in to boredom and bought it before it went free to play. I would have been very annoyed.

This exactly.  I've tried a LOT of MMO's and this one holds the record for quickest uninstall on my system.

Let me put it this way, If I said you could dig through my dumpster for $50 and you said no, would you then do it for free?

'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.

    Great fun for casual players

  • PukeBucketPukeBucket Member Posts: 867

I didn't care for it at first.

I got a lot of COH pals who really enjoy it so I stuck it out and now I'm kind of fond of my shape shifting dual wielder.

Coming from a few other games with more choices it's kind of painful to deal with at first, but no one explained to me how the system worked and it's a little more flexable when you get inside.

The PVP is kind of fun. I still have no idea what any of the goals are on the maps so I often lose, but I can kill more people than I die.

I like being a healer that can get in on the combat, but I do miss being able to focus on a team member and save them with a big heal. All AOEs isn't as great of a system as I had figured. (Kind of made me worried about the pacing of Guild Wars 2 honestly.)

Targeting and the camera response is my biggest problem. The action is nice and fast, but being able to see and accurately hit anyone in a room full of barrels or a bunch of trash mobs I tend to just mow through and let auto target eventually get me to the "big bad" just because that's only slightly less annoying than tapping q or tab to try and find the right target.

My girl hated it outright until I plugged in the XBox controller and I think she's enjoying it more than I am with a more ranged style of Sorcery healer.

It just feels kind of small, but it's fun. Should've launched F2P. There's no way I'd have paid a monthly fee for this game.

I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

  • Fly666monkeyFly666monkey Member UncommonPosts: 161

    I was not impressed.

Combat felt very clunky. Targeting did not work no matter what I tried, and manuvering in battle is impossible. I was playing on a gampad on my PC, I can't imagine what it's like playing this game on mouse and keyboard.

Customization felt very limited, but it may be unfair to say that considering my main MMO is City of Heroes.

I found the F2P limitations to be very restrictive. I managed to get 1/3 of the way to the money cap by level 6.

While I will admit the Voice acting for the main heroes and Vilians is pretty good, the rest is god-awful, and NPC's and mobs repeat the same poorly acted lines over and over and over and over and over...

The initial loading screen took 3 minutes on my pbrand new gaming rig. Not cool.

The worst part for me were the bugs, and not just the minot stuff like graphical problems, or major issues like the audio for quests overlapping each other when I get more than one at a time, or cutcenes with no audio at all. The one that got to me  the most was that thecooldown for my first ability was not consistent. It actually took longer for my first sorcerry ability to recharge indoors than it did outdoors.

According to steam, I quit after 29 minutes of running the program.

The game has potential, but right now  I would not reccomend playing it. F2p is a joke, the combat system needs work, and there are just soooo many bugs that need to be taken care of.

You can cap in the game, do vaults, and all the raids without paying a dime. What do you see yourself spending cash on?

I was referring to in-game cash, not RL currency.

In-game your character as a F2P can only have a total of $1500, and I had roughly 500 by level six. Considering I could not buy much equipment with that when I checked the shops, this did not bode well for later on.

Think he was talking about the in-game currency caps.  Free 1500, Premium 2000, and Legendary Unlimited.

He's basically saying that at level 6, he's already at around 500...

I didn't find there to be enough of a difference between this and City of Heroes and CoH has more overall content than DCUO being the older game.  The combat was neat at first but lost it's luster with me really fast.

Also, I find that gear really didn't have much place in a super hero game unless your character has some sort of technology background and was used as more of a treadmill in DCUO.  Dunno if that changed later.

Most gear is from missions or drops. Just spend cash on keeping 4 or 5 stacks of soda. Really since most gear at end game is token grinding (which I'll never do) cash seems a bit of an afterthought save for buying health / power regen stuff.

Unless you like to hawk the auction house where people have level 6 gear for a few hundred thousand grand.

I'm at level 11 and have over 25 styles (some badge) and not had that problem. Then again since gear is tier based anyway  I don't think it's that big of a deal. Plus isn't upping that cap one of the cheaper market buys? That's typically not the case in F2P.

For people who like the game that's a pretty easy purchase to move up into the premium tier anyway if you planned on sticking around.

I've decided I won't do such a thing until I find out just how annoying token grinding for gear is going to be. Once a day for marks or what not.. That seems to be the truly painful part of this game. Such a stupid time sink mechanic.

I really wanted to like this game and I tried to but alas it just didn't happen. No wonder this game went F2P in such a short amount of time. The game as a whole wasn't fun and the missions were as dull as dishwater and the character creation was the dullest and most uninspiring part of a so called superhero game.

Thankfully I waited till it went F2P before trying it out as I nearly bought it upon it's release but held back long enough to read the masses of negative reviews and saved myself a few quid. I don't know what will save DC Universe though as I doubt F2P will.

Maybe one day a decent superhero MMO will come out but I won't hold my breath. Luckily, SWTOR is released next month so i'll keep my fingers crossed that it will live up to the hype and I can play a decent MMO once again.

I haven't even gotten to play the game yet, and unfortunately not sure I will even bother anymore.  I downloaded it on Tuesday through Steam.  Fired it up yesterday and the first thing I noticed is that took quite a while to install.  I've got a great computer, but for some odd reason it sat there at one of the five steps installing, timestamps.exe or something.  After ten minutes of that the launcher finally popped up.  I've got a station account already, so I log in.  Ok not bad, looks pretty cool.  I spend maybe 20 minutes making a character which was fun, not as detailed as Champion Online's but cool nonetheless.  After that, I attempt to log in to a server, BAM.  1700 queue.  Great, that's just what you want your first impression to be.  Just love waiting to log into a damn game.  Whatever, I just alt tab and wait it out.  15 minutes goes by, I'll go check on my place in line.  Game crashes.  Apparently the game does not like alt-tabbing on my computer in fullscreen mode.

So...I quickly log back in, BAM, 1750 in queue.  Eh eff this, not worth my time.  Time to go free up 17 gb of HDD space.  I know the game just went F2P and everyone in their mother is trying to log in, but stuff like that, when it's my first impression of  a game, is not good.  I tried alt-tabbing again, apparently the game does not like that, crashes every time for me.  I have hundreds of other games to play :D  I really don't want to play a failed p2p game that bad heh.   Good luck everyone else!

i wasn't even gonna try this game but a friend conivinced me to try it. it's more fun then i thought it would be, but it's not an mmo you'll ever take seriously or stick to for long. it's just way too easy and dumb especially the combat. it is fun to just mess arround for an hour every once in a wile or for some hilarious, no consequence pvp. it really feels a lot more like an arcade game then an mmo. it's definately good for F2P.
