You can get a full refund from steam until the game releases. So get your refund and go buy one of the PS3 or Xbox versions you are so keen on.
Sometimes reading these forums really makes me worry about the future of our species. > sigh<
As i said before this is my first game i bought with a steam account and as i also explained in the countless yearsbefore i bought always my games legit in gameshops i just install and play.
Now for first time i bought a game that needed steam and i have to wait untill friday normally no big deal but if any of you Fans of steam/origin or whatever gameportal users understand is steam controlls now how or when you play. A PS3/xbox360 can play right now(why i should refund and buy a console box is beyond me?)and i have to wait ive not ask for this steam activation, ive never illegally downloaded any game ever. When i pre order this game i thought i could play but gues not.
So only i can say now ill wait untill i can play and after Skyrim ill never buy EVER any game that need steam or any DRM.
To guy about offline mode(i know about offline mode at least we have that as pc gamers) if i format my PC i cant play before i install steam again or if i want patch i need to patch through steam, im still not sure how it will go with mods but i can not bring game with me to some other pc that have no internet and play becouse i need steam so as you claim i never need steam ever again is not true.
Hope to build full AMD system RYZEN/VEGA/AM4!!!

ya holy crap, steam sure does suck, making you wait till teh game releases to play it, man, its just insulting to make you wait till a game actually releases to play it.
Also after all those drmed games get boycotted have fun having nothing to play.
Steam do suck with singleplayer games. Sometimes you can log on while off line, sometims not.
I actually considered downloading a pirate version of CIV 5 even though I own it on steam because I bought the game to play it when I am riding train and similar and sometimes I can but often not. Yeah, I could get a mobile net but I really don't want to.
Anti piracy gets annoying, not for the pirates but for the honest people actually paying for the stuff.
Steam shuld really stop the idiot idea that you need to log in to play, besides that it is fine and OPs complain seems weird to me since the game isn't out yet. If he can't play it in Friday things are different though.
Set your steam games to offline mode, problem solved.
Oh, so that's how you do it. I never knew. But it's still kinda dumb how you can't go into offline mode when you're... offline... unless you've prepared for it. Or maybe there is a way but I'm missing something?
You can't, but it's because when you go into offline mode it locks the games in your online account until you set your account back to online mode. It's to prevent you from going into offline mode on one PC, then logging into the same account and playing games on another PC at the same time. But if you know you're going to be travelling or otherwise have spotty or no Internet connection for a period, you can set Steam to offline mode prior.
As for the Steam servers going down, I've been using Steam since 2004. In the last several years, I've only once not been able to play my Steam games due to their servers being down, but even that was resolved in about 15 minutes.
This is my first post here ever, despite having been a member for a few months. Mostly I just read the threads and what not.
But are you stupid? The game doesn't come out 'till Friday.
I only signed up so that I could see the results of polls. Congratulations. You sir, are a winner.

You dont get my point lol.
Its my first game ever i bought with steam account becouse long term fan of series and for ones i wanne try it then with steam.
But this reason why i HATE STEAM, PS3 players can already play it saw it myself today NO ACTIVATION needed but me PC gamer also pre order the game but i can't play.
For god sake its solo game i should as i done countless years before BUY GAME and play no bloody activation through steam becouse 11-11 lol i dont have any control over my own game anymore ZERO NADA nothing.
If its whining fine i dont care but for me its reason why steam and all those who inflict DRM on games should be boycot by all PC gamers.
P.S Personal attacks btw can get you banned your lucky i dont report becouse i dont care what others like you say about me.

Take a look at the DRM Ubisoft uses. You need to have a constant Internet connection to even play, and if your Internet connection shutters or Ubisoft's auth server goes down and your connection drops, the game forcefully boots you out and you will lose any progress as it will not save.
With steam you can activate it once, set the game to offline mode, and you will never have to login through steam to play that game again. As far as DRM goes, Steam is one of the least invasive methods. If you're complaining about Steam, believe me, you would be howling if it was one of the other modern and overly invasive DRM on the market.
steam is one of the worst drms out there, forcing you to use it on hard copies is way worse than some lax 5 install limit.

Steam, or rather Valve, does not decide when a game releases. The developers and publishers do. The steam platform merely abides by those dates. Which is fair, simply put, to prevent the shops that sell early ("illegally") to get more sales because everyone wants to play early.
That said, there's no discussing this with you, because you're being impatient and jealous, and quite frankly immature. Good luck waiting for another WHOPPING 3 days.

Install steam, install game, activate game, set steam to offline mode. There, you never have to login to steam again to play that game.
Again, I point you to Ubisoft's DRM that forces their hard copy games to authenticate online all the time, not only every time you want to play, but while you play as well. Steam will not boot you out of a game if your connection drops in the middle of playing.
And at least with steam you get the piece of mind that if you lose the game discs you can always re-download the game via Steam.
Steam is probally one fo the best things to happen to PC gaming for a long long time.
So many games available to buy/install at a click of a button, really fast downloads, awesome deals nearly every day the list goes on really.
Also steam does not control when games are released, they are told by the publishers when they can make games available. IF your mates already have it on PS3/Xbox then they are either running a porated version or they got lucky and the store the brought it from sent it out early.. unless of course the XBOX and PS3 release date was earlier than PC but i dont think it was as there are no reviews up. Again nothing wrong with Steam here because they dont control any of this.
As for getting hacked... well anything can get hacked really hell the hole sony network was down for weeks because of hacking.. or have you totally forgot about that ?
Best thing you can do is change your password a lot and keep it complicated. (Numbers, letters upper and lower, symbols)
IF for some reason you cant access your steam account then contact their support.
Also steam games can be run in offline mode, I dont believe i have had any issues doing this before..
No pirating AT ALL im talking about big Gameshop chain in holland here most gameshops selling LEGALLY SKYRIM PRE-ORDERS and they also playing it in gameshops on the console i ask how come they can play while i as PC gamer cannot they said the game"Don't need any activation" <===== this was always case for pc games back in old days.

Actually, you're technically not playing Skyrim legally, as the game store you purchased Skyrim from broke the street date for the game. It's not illegal persay, but it is breech of contract on behalf of the store you bought the game from. Besides, it wouldn't be any different if you bought any other game with any form of online authentication (which is pretty much any other game), and tried to activate it prior to the release date.

you understand what one of means right? doesnt matter if theres something worse, steam is up there, what you list is one of the few thing worse than being forced to use steam, there is absolutely no good reason to force you to use steam.

** edit ** I've never had any issues with Steam. The added convenience of being able to just download games and have them automatically update more than makes up for any DRM I've had to put up with. Of course, I do not travel and my internet, while not up to European or Asian standards for speed, never goes out. If I traveled or depended on a shoddy internet hookup, my opinion might be very different.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Wait. Wait. Wait. Now you are saying they are playing it in the store? You need to clarify a bit here. Are they taking it home and playing, or are they just playing on a unit the store set up?
The drama here is getting thick.

The best part of this is that the OP will be back here in a couple of days complaining how the company sold him a game he can't run on his PC. It is clear that he has a tenuous grasp on the world around him and his inability to do simple pre-purchase research and make educated decisions has failed him. This is not a personal attack, it is merely a deduction using the facts at hand.
OP, Steam is not to blame. DRM is not to blame. Slow down, read a little and make educated decisions. It would also serve you well to not post such things as you can see it just invites the ire from others. Good luck.

The game isn't released until November 11th, so if this big gameshop chain you refer to is selling copies, not preorders, allowing customers to purchase games early, they have broken the release date and can face major fines and lawsuits.
In regards to Steam, it acts just like any gameshop when it comes to game releases. When you preorder from steam, they release the game to you on the release date. When you preorder from a gameshop, they release the game on the release date. So if everything is done LEGALLY, and the release date is not broken, then you would be able to play the PC version at the same time as people can play the consoles version.
So I don't see how this it is steams fault that a gameshop in Holland is releasing, illegally, the console version early.

Well I can verify that even in the US most of the special pre-order bundles of Skyrim got sent via UPS to many of the stores that are selling it. Yesterday, along side Modern Warfare 3, the normal Skyrim boxes are in stores waiting for the 11-11-11 date.
Europe probably has more relaxed distribution laws and are therefore voiding the normal release date.
This always happens when games opt for that weird Friday release rather than a Tuesday release.
But it's understood since this week had Metal Gear's HD collection and the new Call of Duty coming out on the normal Tuesday release.
But yeah, Steam's just following the rules in North America.
So wait until Friday like the rest of us / you.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

I was under the impression, though I might be mistaken, that the release date is part of the sales contract between the publisher and distributor? I'm not familiar with European law, but I'd assume they still have pretty strong contract laws, so the publisher should be able to sue based on breach of contract....
Of course I wouldn't expect to see this happening unless the broken street date occurs on a massive scale.

Well said.
Steam is one of the most trusted and safe video game distribution systems ever. So you can download from a list of over 10,000 titles including getting games the day they come out without ever leaving your household. If steam did not exist we would all be buying physical copies of game AND be required to log into the game servers, the video game market is ripe with pirates of all types (casual "pirates" like your mom playing some hacked downloaded version of peggle). Steam's offline mode isn't intuitive, but its one of the best anti-pirate DRMs that cause the least amount of strife with customers.

It dont have to be a Valve game to be intergrated with steam. Any company can opt in to use steamworks stuff it means you will have the DVD but you still need Steam installed to play it.
To those people complaining about steam and saying its the worse thing ever.. I think your could not be futher from the truth, like it said in my other post its probally one fo the best things to happen for PC gaming..
I have brought so many games via steam including some really amazing games that I never would have come accross if it was not for steam. Jsut the other weekend I brought every single GTA game for around £8 inlcuding GTA IV and its extra mission packs.. you dont get those kind of deals anywere else..
I am a happy steam user and have never had an issue with it.
Who cares i BOUGHT GAME RETAIL why should i bloody wait i pre order it, SAME AS PS3 and prolly XBOX360 players who CAN PLAY NOW on 8-11-11.
All you guys realy dont get it do you omg people are so easy ensalved by all these companys its real sad:(
For now it cost me 50 euros with DRM over past 12 years i play PC games, but its already my LAST one lol.
As it was already stated, the game is released on the 11th. That is when the company wants their game released.
The store that sold you the game shouldn't have sold it to you. I suspect they were doing you a favor in letting you get it early so you can avoid any store rush.
I imagine that the people who are playing it now on x-boxor playstation should not be playing it now.
So essentially you are upset that people who have procured the game ahead of schedule when they shouldn't have, are playing it before you because of their platform of choice.
I has nothing to do with being enslaved by companies.

So not pirating they LEGALLY playing Skyrim right now.

Skyrim isn't due to be released until FRIDAY...<face palm> ^^
you understand what one of means right? doesnt matter if theres something worse, steam is up there, what you list is one of the few thing worse than being forced to use steam, there is absolutely no good reason to force you to use steam.
Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling"
Sig typo fixed thanks to an observant stragen001.
Skyrim isn't a Valve game. You're talking about Origins, the EA equivalent to Steam.
** edit **
I've never had any issues with Steam.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
Steam forums was hacked. Not the game account side which is protected by a beefy game guard sucurity feature, unless you opted out of it.
I posted links about the situation here yesterday. http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/331280/Steams-Forum-Security-compromised.html
Also, skyrim cant be played on Steam until the release date. That is why the op cant get it to authorize.
Good luck.
Get a refund from Steam and buy the console version.
Just l o l......
OMG, OP!
Available: 11 November 2011
This game will unlock in approximately 2 days and 9 hours
what the hell are you?
