Its because steam is told and held up by a strict contract not to release the game until the official release. Stores already have the product and can give them out with out more then a slap on the hand/fine. But a developer at anytime can tell steam to remove the product from site because of breach in contract forcing steam to have to refund all the preorders if it is caught before release. So if you want to play the blame game, go blame Bethseda.
LOL slap on the wrist?
when the "Video Game Express" near me released Deus Ex a day early, they were firstly no longer allowed to order games from their game provider, secondly Square Enix filed a lawsuit against them and pulled all their games from the store and forbid them to ever sell any of their products again.

Slap on the wrist... haha
Whoops....I'm starting to do what my wife does...mess up all the sayings. lol
This is getting past the point of funny and into the scary territory - this guy (OP) is obviously not going to listen to a word anyone is saying, so let's just call it quits?
It's also realllllly funny how he talks of these big corporate greedy companies... who he continues to buy games from....
I am officially confused. They are playing it in Holland although the release date is on the 11th and you are mad at steam for this. Is that the gist of it ?
You know what is funny and relevant to this thread? This.
No matter if the netherlands are breaking the contracts they signed with bethesda, its still not steams fault. Steam is just following orders from Bethesda. This guy can stop complaining an wait the 3 days to play it like everyone else in the world.
I got a message today from my retail shop as well, saying that I could come and pick up my box version of Skyrim. I was a bit surprised since I didn't expect a message until friday, but I was happy ofcourse. So I picked it up, unboxed it, activated it on Steam but then received a message that I could not install the game. It's too bad, ofcourse, but it's normal and understandable.
So instead of whining and imagining things like Steam being hacked, just wait until friday, and in the meanwhile, just wank yourself off on the box for the next two days, like me.
ya holy crap, steam sure does suck, making you wait till teh game releases to play it, man, its just insulting to make you wait till a game actually releases to play it.
Also after all those drmed games get boycotted have fun having nothing to play.
Steam do suck with singleplayer games. Sometimes you can log on while off line, sometims not.
I actually considered downloading a pirate version of CIV 5 even though I own it on steam because I bought the game to play it when I am riding train and similar and sometimes I can but often not. Yeah, I could get a mobile net but I really don't want to.
Anti piracy gets annoying, not for the pirates but for the honest people actually paying for the stuff.
Steam shuld really stop the idiot idea that you need to log in to play, besides that it is fine and OPs complain seems weird to me since the game isn't out yet. If he can't play it in Friday things are different though.
Set your steam games to offline mode, problem solved.
Oh, so that's how you do it. I never knew. But it's still kinda dumb how you can't go into offline mode when you're... offline... unless you've prepared for it. Or maybe there is a way but I'm missing something?
You can't, but it's because when you go into offline mode it locks the games in your online account until you set your account back to online mode. It's to prevent you from going into offline mode on one PC, then logging into the same account and playing games on another PC at the same time. But if you know you're going to be travelling or otherwise have spotty or no Internet connection for a period, you can set Steam to offline mode prior.
As for the Steam servers going down, I've been using Steam since 2004. In the last several years, I've only once not been able to play my Steam games due to their servers being down, but even that was resolved in about 15 minutes.
They are having more issues lately. Mainly on older games they put on sale though.
Now, i am not one of the Steam haters:) I prefer Steam to boxed games, so i can delete, or Dl a game when ever i want and do not have to hunt for a box and maybe have a bad disc.
But they do have server issues at times. Last sale they had on Civ 5, think it was a week long sale, i was never able to DL the trial of Civ 5 to try it out and see if i wanted to buy game. I tried every single day, and their servers were always too busy. Not just the trial either. there were peoiple that bought the game and were not able to DL it for that entire week as well.
That was an older game, so most likely they just didnt have enough server capacity to handle the load, i doubt that they would have that issue on a new hit game, but we will have to see.
Either way, i have not decided yet to buy the game at release, but when i do, i will be using Steam.
Back to OP: As to all other Steam games, i have been playing a few and have no issues at all. The forum is down that is all. Has had no affect at all on any of my games that i have seen.
This just seems to be mostly an un-informed person, that bought somethging not knowing how it worked. It clearly says when the game is going to be released and be able to be played. As far as i have seen they release is for all PC and the only thing i have seen that may make some want to go for the console (360) version is this:
RPGamers may recall the 30-day Xbox 360 exclusivity deal for Dead Money, the first DLC pack for Fallout: New Vegas. Microsoft have struck a similar deal for the first DLC pack for the upcoming multiplatform release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Those who purchase the game on the 360 will have a 30-day headstart on DLC over PlayStation 3 and PC players, although there has been no news just yet on what the first DLC pack will contain. Skyrim is still set for a November 11 release date.
SO if the OP, or anyone else, does decide to go for a console (360) version, keep that in mind.

That and Kotaku notriously covers rumors without any facts to back them up really. Not that it isnt' real, its just I doubt it is, why would game stores risk their lively hood for a video game to be released early?
Seems sketchy.
Either way, if they ARE Violating the law, that still doesn't make Steam bad for not joining them.
They are having more issues lately. Mainly on older games they put on sale though.

Apparently some people have obtained copies prior to the actual release date, and are able to play it for PS and XBox, but not PC because of Steam integration is locking the game until the official release date.
The only conclusion as why the OP is getting so ridiculously upset considering that it's only the 8th today, is that Holland has encountered a tear in space and time that has propelled them three days into the future.
Are there no dutch people here who can confirm this becouse im telling you guys game is sold here by the bulk almost.
Ive been to 3 different shops and all selling Skyrim this no lie.
I got my copy witch includes a nice map of skyrim.
And again explaining this is my first ever steam game that it maybe all clear to you guys very nice for you but as i told you before i bought games in past 12 years all RETAIL without any DRM.
But becouse im a LONGTERM follower of Elder Scrolls i desided one time buying this new Skyrim. I INVESTIGATE that much about steam that they had offline mode and scan my PC im agains that but becouse i have nothing of intrest on my PC they go ahead. So i pre-order the game with knowledge i could play game as so many more pre-order games in past that i could play.
No concideration that steam could prefend that, ah well so be it and i can live with that np. But there is where my problem lays, becouse i have now a steam related game i bought retail i have no control over my game anymore, if it was as before i would play now but with steam i have to wait, thus freedom gone. This all becouse of all the thiefs who where stealing all there games online im punished for this DRM system.
Maybe in your eyes steam is best system and of all DRM system it prolly is i realy dont know or care its still a restriction i don't want, whats so hard to understand about this? Maybe thick concrete wall around head lol and i can't get through to you guys:P
Steam limited my freedom its simple as that you eather undertsand or don't its up to you guys
Again have fun with all your steam/oroigin/ubisoft and other drm releated games. I will also with my old games and all the free games i can get my hands on my wallet stay closed also with mmorpgs i wont pay any euro ever(i play all the crap free2play before i pay any cents again) i can use my money else where for better things

It has nothing to do with Steam. You (and me) were just lucky to lay our hands on the box version already, which saves us some time considering we don't have to pick it up anymore on friday. That's all there is to this.

Here is my question to you, how are they money grubbers as you said in your previous post?
How are they bad guys for not letting you play a game before its release date?
I offically surrender my thought processes are confounded and am in withdrawal. Thanks Ceridith for the attempt to clarify the primary inversion theory was good though.

I'm starting to suspect that the OP is actually ticked off that he needs to authorize the game through Steam, not that it's already playable by some. I'm not really sure though. I'm not certain Skyrim needs to be activated in this way and I have a hard time deciphering the code the OP is posting in.

If you look at the link that someone posted it clearly is a picture of the game and a receipt. I also went to those dutch forums and it does seem that stores are sellign it. But that doesn't mitigate that fact that they were asked not to sell it.
It still stands that the release date is 11/11/11. If this is a concern for you then by all means start buying games for other platforms. However, the time is coming that many games will have some sort of activation similiar to STeam.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Yes, I think its confirmed that it is being sold in some areas, but thats not really the issue here. Its the op thinking that steam has done something wrong and that he should be allowed to play.
I think the best example I can come up with is you buying some weed from your drug dealer but the cops wont allow you to smoke it. Therefor the cops are money grubbers and are telling you when and where you can smoke your weed.
But in that case as in this one, the cops (Steam) are just following the laws they have to follow by the people that order them, the government (Bethesda). Just because you got some weed (Skyrim) doesnt mean your allowed to smoke it just because it will be legalized soon (Play it because it will be released soon).

But in that case as in this one, the cops (Steam) are just following the laws they have to follow by the people that order them, the government (Bethesda). Just because you got some weed (Skyrim) doesnt mean your allowed to smoke it just because it will be legalized soon (Play it because it will be released soon).
See what I did there?
