Force Junkies: Tour through Bioware and SWTOR

Fansite Summit: A Pictured Story of Our Time at Bioware’s Studio

Found this and did a little reading about the zone sizes. This is some pretty impressive stuff.

There are lots of pics in here and from what the author says, ToR is pretty huge.

Stephen Reid was heading up our tour and he pointed out one really cool printout (seen to the right) that showed different world zones and how they related to each other in size. We saw a simple picture of Hoth, Balmorra and Korriban; by the look of things you can just get an idea of the scope of some of these planets we’ll see.

If you got a chance to play at some of the different conventions, you might of been able to see and play on Korriban. Now take that little spec of a map and lay it over Hoth… Yeah that’s awesome.

Now take that into account and know that Hoth isn’t the largest planet. Take that knowledge and expand it over many, all of the other different planets. It’s an explorer’s dream. From one gamer to another, let me tell you explorers out there that you will not be disappointed.

I can’t really tell you anything specific, but some of the landscapes you will see when you get your hands on SWTOR are truly breathtaking in their size and scope. You really can’t appreciate the scale of some of the environments until you are running through them.

The most reassuring thing is that it sounds as if this is an actual ADVENTURE game with plenty of areas to explore, precisely what's been missing from most mmos nowadays.

Rift you could go from one end of a map to the other in no time which reinforced that small "un-epic" feeling. Knowing that the biggest zones in ToR haven't even been released yet is nice.

Kind of reminds me of GW2 when they showed some huge dragon and said "this is one of our little dragons".

Having played Vanguard for four years i think any mmo would have to be beyond vast to impress me. It would have to have no mountains blocking your way or invisible walls and i should be able to go where i want without loading.A complete open world with no instances.

SWTOR dose not fit that bill.

If you like Vanguard, I suggest to go play it and stay there, or better yet, use Asheron's Call as an example, that had an even bigger world.

As far as themepark MMO's goes, SWTOR looks to be one of the largest in worldsize if not the largest. For those who liked the expansiveness of WoW and Lotro, I'm pretty sure they'll be able to enjoy SWTOR's worlds as well. So far, I like what I've read and seen about it.

It also looks like to be larger in overall worldsize than the upcoming MMO's like TERA, GW2, TSW and ArcheAge as well image

Large maps that are handcrafted reward exploration far more than vast maps with heavy use of random generated terrain, not to mention content becomes spread far too thin in a world like VG.

WTH are you rabbiting on about lol.

Larger than AA,GW2, really! and you have played AA and GW2? you are assuming and wishing.

Vanguard is a themepark MMO so SWTOR being the biggest themepark is bullshit.

You like what you have read..Bully for you ,that still does not make SWTOR the biggest themepark MMO. I played Asheron's call and it is big but Vanguard is bigger.

For your name title you sure do not know what you are talking about.

The expansiveness of lotro and wow.lmfao.

Vanguard has tons of content, you could not see all of the content with three years of play.

SWTOR will not be the largest MMO world at all,it's wishful thinking from people like yourself.

I played VG, was pretty good, expect for the lack of people and the bugs. But it wasnt as huge as he is saying. I played for over  a year. I believe that SWTOR will be one of the largest themepark mmos, not saying it is the largest but one of them. Also you just sound like a troll going after people who like SWTOR.

Vanguard has tons of content, and nobody to play it, so who really cares?

And i played VG for a year and saw all the content.  "bully" for you for liking it so much. But i belive SWTORs numbers /fans will show y SWTOR is better then VG. So go bully other people.

Really nice. The size, openness and details of the worlds is one of the biggest selling points for me too. They look to be really immersive. I've read some complaints from demo players that they had to travel a lot but that's very much how I like my mmorpg's. You'll really be happy once you get / can use your first mount in Swtor, I reckon.

Games like WAR and AoC disappointed me a lot due to artificial world design and mechanics. Really having high hopes for this one. Nothing better than just roaming around in a huge map, scavenging, world pvp' ing or running away from it and stumbling on unexpected things.

On world size: whether you like it or not, it looks like Swtor will be Massive with a capital M.

It has been found that some of the starter worlds are the size of the barrens, and Tython a bit bigger than Elwynn forest.

Using that knowledge and looking at the picture from the link in the OP, makes it look like they weren't exagerating AT ALL when saying some planets were 7/8 WOW zones in size. And I think it's a careful estimate. Hoth looks way more than 8 times bigger as Korriban.

    There will be

4 starter planets the size of a big wow zone

2 capital planets, probably double that size or more (not sure here, but I've read hands-on reports saying they are pretty big)

11 large, shared planets, 7/8 wow zones

That's a total worlds size of around 90 WOW ZONES (not counting instanced content)

Which is bigger in size than WOW and all it's expansions.

Best yet: phasing is only used in limited interior areas for personal story and conversation means. The worlds are OPEN. This has been stated multiple times.

Bestest yet: The worlds are richly detailed and look to be very immersive; no lazy copy-pasta sewed together world design.

All in all I think that is amazing.

    I agree, Sir Pony!

I LOVED to roam the vast realms of Vanguard. Hope TOR is big in this aspect as well. The bigger the better! XD

I loved Vanguard. I loved how big the world was (biggest I'd ever seen) and how diverse everything was in regards to class type, race type and starting zones.

That said, hardly any of it worked right. I remember crossing zones and seeing the "seamless" line that separated them only to crash. Just about every time that line was crossed, you crashed. I remember in the city that you'd fall through the floors and get stuck in walls. I remember how badly implemented the Diplomacy system was. I remember the buggy dungeons and instances.

As great of potential that game had and as much as I wanted it to be the ultimate PvE game, it was very broken and I had to give it up almost a year later.

What good is a Ferrari if the engine only goes to 40 mph before crashing out?
