It seems today that everytime you turn around some company is popping out some new fantasy MMO. I think to myself who the heck is playing these? I dont fault them for it if they like it, but IMO Its the same type of story spun some weird way with name changes to people, places, races, and things. Tracking my own game time progress maybe Im just burned out on the genre. I played Rifts couple weeks ago, but just couldnt stay in the game not because its not a good game because I enjoyed it, but the fantasy world felt like the others. AOC is a slight exception.
I played Eve and extrodianry length of time as well as COH/COV, STO (yes i played over 4 months and not embarrased) , Fallen Earth, and lately World of Tanks. Im so looking forward to SWTOR, TSW, (possibly planetside 2), and WOD.
IMO the MMO world needs more "out of the box" games and less Fantasy.
Wanted to get other opinion of this. Please dont use this thread to bash games.

Darth rabbid: Are my non payments making you angry love? Embrace you feelings of anger....
Satele Shan: Oh shut up please! You owe me a grand total of 2 mill plus back pay for being Dark Lord of the Sith and Leader of the Dark council. Dark Pony pays for his kids! Why cant you?
Darth Rabbid thinking how can I get out of this this.......
Darth Rabbid: Big smile. "Awwww pookies I havent given it to you in a while. let me show you again how rabbits do it..**shakes his hips***
Satele Shan: **pouty face** Okay i be right there, but you promise to pay?

I'm not neccessarily tired of high fantasy, but I do look forward to games that shy away from it. I mix up my game playing enought that between STO, DCUO, Fallout and others that I don't get tired quickly of one setting.
What I really want is a decent steampunk game. It looks like City of Steam may be my next hope; even if browser based.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
I am not sure if I would use the term tired, but it wouldn't hurt with a few new games in different settinds.
Top on my list is however a historical game with no magic or crap. And Shadowrun...
Another setting that would make an interesting MMO is Erik Flints Ring of fire.
Of course historical games do need different mechanics than the regular fantasy games, you can't just slap the holy trinity on it. Healers only works in fantasy after all.
Yep, Fantasy MMOs are so stale for me now. None of them are very different to all the others, which makes the boredom worse.
There's no real alternatives to Fantasy MMOs for me ATM. I've subscribed to DCUO for a while, but while it's fun it's not much of a challenge. I'll go back to STO when it EVENTUALLY goes F2P and dabble in that. It's OK for the odd 20 minutes or so, but it's too shallow a game to subscribe to or indeed play for any length of time.
I do agree that we could definitely use more quality MMOs in all genres, but I'm not personally tired of fantasy.
I think anything in any genre can be done well, as long as there is imagination and originality involved in it. I think fantasy is tired if developers are just phoning in dwarves, elves and dragons, but if they mix it up or at least add their own spin on it, then it's ok.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it." -Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
I never liked fantazy much in the first place, and I'm definitely tired of it.
I would like very much if the next half dozen or so MMOs released did not have Dragons of any kind. Or Elves.
But it's really just a reaction to fifteen years of Dragons, and a desire for more variety in general.
Not so tired of Fantasy, I guess; just this branch of the Fantasy tree. It's a much bigger genre than MMOs have explored.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
Kinda honestly. Bit tired of spaceship MMO too (not of sci-fi, just the spaceship part).
i completely agree with the OP, they are definitely plenty of good games in the genre but they all seem pretty much the same, can't wait SWTOR to come out!!
Free online MMOs
Well the problem is that there are so many mediocre fantasy mmos out there. I'm not really tired of the genre, just tired of the current mmos out there.
With that said, I would love a cyber punk mmo kind of like Deus Ex. Out of the mmos coming out, the "world" (different from the actual game) that I'm most looking forward to is The Secret World.
I'm so cynical now that I don't expect SWTOR to be any use either. I really hope I'm wrong, but I'm not holding my breath.
Well Star Wars is pretty much fantasy in space.
Every imaginary story is fantasy anyways but you know very well what people mean when they say Fantasy in terms of MMORPG. And yes Star wars is also a fantasy but for purpose of discussion and reference to MMOS it is very much a sci-fi genre.
No i am not the least tired of the genre,i am tired of the cheap efforts devs are putting out.The trend now days is to find a cheaper way to run the game and ways to cut corners, none of these devs are trying to give us a complete well rounded and in depth game, not even close.
One of these days we might get a dev put in the effort,it seriously is quite doable, then people will be reinvigorated by the genre again.
I feel ArcheAge is making a small step to giving the genre new life but slowly and mainly revolves around pvp.
There is so much to be done in the Fantasy genre it is staggering to think none of these devs can think, they would rather copy everything including UI's designs, quest markers, npc markers, map markers, none of these devs can think for themselves.
That is why i so loved FFXI,they didn't copy the same design and systems everyone else was using, they changed it up gave it a more realistic feel and it did work.We can't even get people to accept grouping in MMO's ,very sad,yet they are ok with sloppy unorganized auto grouping.
There is only so many genres anyhow,sci-fi/space/real modern/ancient/fantasy.The Fantasy genre allows perhaps the most versatility in design,it is too bad devs don't take that versatility and use it.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
While I prefer fantasy, I wouldn't mind seeing more veriety within the genre. More urban, more working sandboxes, maybe fantasy set in the age of discory or americant west eras instead of ancient or mediaeval ones.
There's only so many ways you can have a game with elves, orcs and orges, and make it interesting. I honestly think that a mmo that is set in maybe the mid evil europe days would be ok. I guess set in the time of King Arthur or around that period. I also think a mmo set in prehistoric times would be pretty cool as well. You could have a lot of different races of man fighting for terrotiry and such, all awhile trying to survive the elements and creatures of that time. Would probably be best setup in more of a sandbox than themepark though.
No.
I was enjoying high fantasy through books and role-playing games 20 years before the first MMORPG went live...so it's pretty unlikely that I will ever get tired of high fantasy.
That's not to say I don't also enjoy science fiction...as soon as someone makes a good science fiction MMORPG, I'll very likely play it. I don't see any in the pipeline anytime soon.
I'm tired of point and click games and mmo's without randomly made loot.
If i see or hear another goblin, dwarf or any other fantasy related thing it'll be to soon,
Fantasy mmo's have been done to the death, resurected then deathblowed once more/
there should be more sci-fi or other themes tbh, end the tidiousness please.
The Deathstar destroyed planets...Lucas Arts destroyed Galaxies

SWG | EVE | WOW | VG | LOTRO | WAR | FML | STO | APB | AOC | MORTAL | WOT | BP | SW:TOR
Nope, will never be tired of fantasy.
I also like sci-fi, but if given a choice, I'll go with fantasy.
in short yes
need a good sci-fi game. i know ToR is coming, but there needs to be others. EVE and black prophcy are not bad, but really thats all there is out there at the moment.
i love reading fantasy novels.
i didn't read LOTR and go, "well, that's it. no point reading any more fantasy novels."
to me, mmos are the same kind of thing. they're new worlds, with new ideas and new shinies. sure, they may still have elves in them, but so do plenty of fantasy novels which aren't LOTR. and they don't fail.
so, no, i'm not tired of fantasy settings in my mmos. mostly, they're all i'll play. the urban ones don't do it for me much. if i want to shoot things, i prefer the 3dshooter style of bangbangdierespawn.
Nah, even though I have played a whole gamut of fantasy games / MMOs... I still enjoy them. Past experience includes FFXI (my favorite of the bunch), WoW, GW, L2, Aion, and most recently RIFT (which I just unsubbed from... too busy with work, Skyrim, and MTG to justify the $15 / month).
I think the only thing I am tired of is the monthly fees. Enough good games are out to keep me busy until TL2, D3, and GW2 comes out.... and already busy with Starcraft 2, Skyrim, and Battlefield 3.
Not tired of fantasy MMOs at all, just tired of poorly made and/or maintained ones.
No that is not true. Every imaginary story is fiction. Star Wars does not fit into the definition of SciFi. Star Wars is an epic. True Sci-fi is books like Frankenstein, Cats Cradle, 1984, Fahrenheit 451, most works by Issac Azamoth and Arthur C. Clark.
Star Wars story does not depend upon it being in space. Jedi could be samurai, and the emperor an evil shogun, and its the same story.
Sent me an email if you want me to mail you some pizza rolls.
Not tired at all,I just want a better fantasy mmo than those which are available to play now, before i get too tired with the whole mmo genre and go for a game like Skyrim.
