It does run quite smooth and that bug you discribed was fixed ages ago. Also you missed my point entirely, trees 800m away will NOT be loaded. The max setting for trees and terrain detail is 376m, Im pretty sure everything inside that radius is constantly updated, allthough I cant be sure.

My main point still stands, what you know about engines in other games is pretty irrelevant.

In the 1.5+ years of beta play before the launch, lag was negligible, and the sector crossing bug was unknown. Population ingame was low, probably the same as it is now, perhaps even slightly higher.

The problems suddenly appeared as the population rose massively on launch day. They persisted for weeks afterwards, even with almost all systems disabled on the server. Clearly, the game engine could not cope with the higher player numbers. Then things started improving slowly. Jooki said he was applying fixes and optimizations, but at the same time people were leaving the game in large numbers.

Now the population is back to where it was pre-launch, and game performance is smooth once again. The problem is that there's no way to tell whether the issues fixed themselves (due to everyone unsubbing) or whether the root causes of the problems were fixed in the game engine.

The stability of the engine under "heavy" load was only ever tested once, and it failed. Hard. Time will tell...

There was never any true closed or open "beta", unless you're referring to the "early access", which essentially amounted to an extended paid closed beta?
