Only if you going looking for trouble or are one of the less "tolerated" people on your server.

Otherwise, PKs have not happened that frequently.

Unless you plan on being an active PKer and changing that? :-p

Yeah, it's amazing that the games that I got harassed the least in, have been games like Lineage 2 (played for 3 years) and Darkfall, Shadowbane, old UO, etc...

The same games where the people you harass are given the freedom and tools to bite back! The same games where "reputation" isn't some in-game coded mechanic of faction.

In 3 years of L2, I only got harassed a couple of times, and I likely deserved it one of those times :)

By "harassed" I am talking about a higher level player that i have no shot against (or no shot getting away from) continually killing me for no reason.

Heck, people left me alone for the most part even when I was red! (from killing gold farmers in the early days)

Is it true that I'll get PKed everywhere i go for simply farming in an area that an OP character has staked their claim to? Is it true that its just another whiney PK community unfriendly to PvE players?

If i dont want PvP, would you say stay away from this game?

As people said before me, you should have researched the game and what it's about, before complaining.

L2 was always open world PvP, and yes, you can get killed everywhere outside a town.

I wouldn't call it PvE unfriendly, I mostly do PvE, but hell, my Destro can take care of bussiness if someone bothers me.

Thanks for the feedback.  I dunno if i wanna try it. Maybe I'll keep looking a little more. I've never been in a PVP envirnoment...

BTW, I love carebears. They taste great with extra ketchup and hot sauce.

Try it. It's free so you have nothing to lose. If you play smart you'll rarely be PK'd. You just have to know where the PKer's like to hang out. If someone runs up and hits you don't hit back unless you're prepared to fight. Also as others have stated being in a good clan helps tremendiously. I've seen PKers run right past people with clan tags and go after the loners as they know they won't have some god-like clan leader showing up to hand them their ass. 99.99% of the people who play Lineage II rarely PK as there is no challenge in it like regular PvP and has some really steep penalties. It's really only that .01% of douchbag cowards you have to worry about.

Funny thing is... I logged in last night, on my Tyrant sub-class (a wee level 41) and ported over to Gludio to see what was going on there, to find the same thing I found in every other town I visited... a lot of people just standing around not doing much other than lagging up the towns.

    Anyway!

Poked my head outside to see what it looked like out there and notice several dead bodies lying around. Moments later, I get hit with a Hurricane spell. Doesn't do much damage. I get hit again.. turn around to see a red standing there, nuking all the lower level players.  Not entirely unexpected given all the new people flooding into the game..

Even at level 41, they weren't hitting me for as much damage as I'd have expected. It took them like 5 hits to even get through my CP. Then again, my character's pretty well geared and was fully buffed up... and it's been a while so I don't really remember how they take damage anyway...

So, I think "Ahh... a higher level PK'er picking on the newbies. This should be fun".

I duck back inside Gludio, switch over to my main (level 77 Spectral Dancer), swap in my higher level gear, equip my shiny +8 dual swords... and decide to go help the newer players do their thing without being harassed.

    Who can predict what happened?

Hint: The same thing that happens when you go after most any other griefer/ganker who only preys on far weaker targets...

If you guessed "Ran off like the wusses they actually are", you're right!

I didn't chase them far.. just far enough to where they were out of range of attacking anyone else. I'd go back into town and wait.. Sure enough... about 5 minutes later, they were back outside the gate attacking lower levels again. Griefers are extremely predictable.

The song "The Bravery of Being Out of Range" by Roger Waters always comes to mind when I encounter these people.

I ran back out.. they ran away again. This time they nuked me with Hurricane, trying to be "tough" I guess. I ran closer to them and they ran off further. I PM'd them asking why they kept running away and they said - I kid you not - that they were going to report me to a GM if I didn't stop bothering them. I asked "Have you happened to notice what color your name is? You're a walking bulls-eye. I'm just helping those players actually play the game by keeping you from griefing them".

They said "This is PvP MMO and I'm not carebear like you. I'm hardcore PvP. Go away carebear". I said "Oh, I disagree. I'd say standing at a safe distance, nuking far weaker players and then running away when confronted makes you a Certified Grade-A Carebear. " I quickly ran a few meters toward him and he ran off again. I said "See? You keep running away. That doesn't seem very "hardcore PvP" to me".

Then he said - and I kid you not - the most perfectly telling and unintentionally honest thing he could have said.

He said, "I can't kill you".

I said "Oh, so it has nothing to do with you being hardcore. It has everything to do with you only wanting targets you know you can kill. Well that's definitely not hardcore".

Then I figured "Okay, point made..." and said "Lay off the lowbies." and went back to town.

    Did he learn? Nope.

A few minutes later, he's right back at it.

This time I went out the other way and before he had time to react, hit him with "Arrest" so he couldn't run off (wonderful skill when you can get close enough to use it), and dropped him. I said to him, "You didn't listen".  He disappeared. I think he must have logged out after that since I didn't see him after that.

It's always fun giving lowbie gankers a taste of their own medicine.

If anyone's going to ask "Why didn't you take him on with your 41?"..  My goal was to get them to leave the lowbies/newbies alone so they could actually get out of the gate and do what they needed to without being harassed.

I'll take it one step farther:

Don't play MMORPGs at all if you're afraid of your character dying.

In fact.. don't play practically any video game at all, ever, if you're afraid of your character dying.

Here's the thing... It's not a matter of people not wanting their characters dying. The concern seems to be people concerned that they're going to be PK'd/Ganked constantly whiel they're trying to do something else not PvP related.

It's a question of frequency, not whether it happens or not at all.

In that regard, L2 has never - at least since Chronicle 3 - been a MMO where you had to worry about being PK'd constantly. The chance is always there. But it's not something that's going to happen non-stop. Most people have better things to do, frankly.

The exceptions are if you happen to be in an area that a serial PK'er has chosen to be their "hunting ground" (chances are it's going to be an area far below their own level for easy pickins), you're in a clan actively at war with other clans and you happen to cross paths.. or you're a well known idiot on your server and have done things that make people want to actively hunt you down and PK you.

If you're a regular player who doesn't fall into those categories and you're just minding your own business, you have very little to worry about.
