I personally try to avoid all hype (not always successfully) when it comes to games and just read up a bit towards release to get a jist of what the games about or get into a beta and take it from there. So the opportunity to play beta this weekend was a great chance to try before I buy and really other than stress testing the servers this is what EA & Bioware intended with the mass beta key givaway.
First of all I'm really more of a Bioware fan than Star Wars fan and NWN1 & Dragon Age: Origins are my favorites rather than KOTOR so I learn more towards fantasy than Sci-fantasy, also I do come from the original Star Wars generation and remember being taken to see Star Wars: A New Hope at the pictures when I was 7. I went into TOR as I said with no real insight into what is was going to be like other than knowing that like Bioware's single player games it would be heavily story based.
Now my initial experience was rather odd as I could not get the client to run smoothly on Friday night and it was grating abit but I still kind off enjoyed what I saw even though it was choppy and frustrating in places so not a really good first impression and of course I blame the client and not my end . So I wake up on Saturday and fire up the client and bingo it runs smooth as silk so I just start playing and before I know it a few hours have gone by and it hits me I've been completely engrossed in my Sith Inquisitor's story and just want to see whats going to happen next that the time has flown by. So the rest of the day I finish up the story do a few group quests that end up with the presentation of my first Light Sabre which was my first fuck me momet and also I've just got my first companion which is an interesting development. I'm now on the Fleet ship just learning about all the different aspects of the game before I go off to Dromund Kass.
I really did not think I'd like this game after reading comments on this forum and others but I've personally been really surprised in how good it is and maybe thats because of having low expectations to begin with. Personally i think we really do have a winner in TOR that will entertain many many people over the coming months and years. It really, for me, is going usher in the next generation of MMO's. Well done Bioware should I have ever doubted the talent that this company has?
Though I do give everyone the right to bash me over the head with this popst in the future if my prediction of TOR being a very big sustained success for many years turns out to "new toy" syndrom but this the first MMO I've played since WoW that has that feel of quality and longevity.

Me, I changed my mind. Just trying to cancel my pre-order. It's rubbish, what a let down.
Currently Playing: World of Warcraft
Are you saying you haven't played any other mmos since WoW? Because I think only someone who is completely new to mmos will find this game interesting.
Rift grabbed my attention immediatley and held it for a couple of months during which i maxed three characters. This game bored me after a couple of hours.
this
100% right, I did try it and that's why I don't want to buy it.
I actually forced myself to play it for more hours than I wanted... I was so utterly bored by it.
They couldn't have possibly made the gameplay more cookie-cutter than it allready is.
Sure the cinematics are amazing and I like the conversations with NPCs.. but the rest of the gameplay is a complete letdown.
This is probably the bigest lost opportunity in gaming history.
Where the hell did that 120+ million dollars in dev cost go!?
..Cake..
Glad you like the game man.
Never EVER use MMORPG.com forums to decide if you should try a game or not....if the posters here had any say, we would all be bitter trolls with nothing to play.
He asked the question 'Who's changed their mind after playing this weekend's Beta?' and I answered truthfully.
What's your problem?
Actually it's over 300 million and most of it went directly to mister George Lucas.
Amidoinitrite?
My brand new bloggity blog.
Totally agree.
Just a shame everytime anyone has a valid and informed opinion on here (from over fifteen years of playing mmos from UO onwards) they get called a Troll.
Noway.. the hate swtor is getting is imho doing the game a favor.
Everyone should always make up their own mind. Why base your opinions on what I like because you may like something completely different. Like/dislike is subjective after all.
But the general feeling about games from serious posters is nothing to be dismissive about in my opinion. MMORPG.com forum boards do not destroy games or their potential because as many have pointed out in the past, forums don't count. But from what I have seen, taken collectively impressions can be very telling about a games potential success or failure.
But I think even if this game is a terrible cookie cutter game it is Star Wars and ofcourse it will succeed and continue for some time based on this fact alone. Had this game been based on an unkknown or completely original IP, the reception would be even less optimistic.
As far as changing my mind....I'm still getting the game but my excitment has cooled considerably.
Posting an on topic response is hijacking? Do you think that everyone who didn't enjoy beta and thinks that others need to know before they waste their money shouldn't be allowed to post an opinion?
I didn't enjoy the game, i've given my reasons elsewhere, all valid and based on experiece of play this weekend. That's my opinion, i didn't tell anyone they were wrong if they enjoyed it.
If you make your opinion on basis of negativity on this site there is not a single MMO worth playing. And if these forums had any influence on MMOS outside of this website..Vanguard would be a smashing hit and WOW would have closed down couple of years back.
Make up your own mind and take everything said here with fist full of salt. These forums make a very small minority of gamers world wide.
Good post.
No it wasn't- The 300M number was pulled out of someones @ss during that EA louse incident a year ago.
So far is the official number "Eas most expensive game ever" which means 115+ M$. Guesses usually runs around 150M$.
Unless of course you have a very good source you can link to?
Lol, everyone knew the number was made up a year ago but now it turned into "fact".
I was going to pre order, just have been putting it off .
After playing this weekend I am on the fence about buying it and glad I did not pre prder. Having been burned a few times it is a rarity that I ever preorder anyways.
So while I wont be in on early access or 1st day of launch I will probably end up buying it in 4-6 weeks when I get bored of the plethora of great single player games out now.
Overall I thought it was an OK game. No glaring issues I found, ran smooth with no lag, disconnects, ect for me. Main thing IMO was it is pretty much general MMO themepark faire, with voiceovers and companions. They played it pretty safe and stuck to the tried and true formula. Which I dont have a problem with at all, just not in a huge rush to play it.
On topic- yeah i changed my mind about preordering But have nothing bad to say about the game. Overall I found it enjoyable but nothing that makes me " gotta play now". For me it will be a few good months of casual play, until something else grabs my attention.
I didn't plan to buy the game, and I still don't. Some of the issues I had with the game before I had played the Beta have been removed whereas others have been completely solidified.
I thought that combat would feel just like WoW or Rift, but it didn't. It certainly felt more actiony despite the horrible global cooldown.
Currently, the most important reason for me not to buy the game has got to be the quests. At level 4 already I discovered that if you are only doing quests related to your story you'll soon find yourself to be outmatched by the foes that you come across throughout the story. So basically, you NEED to do the boring kill X, collect Z quests in order to level efficiently. And that bothers me, as well as the fact that especially the early quests require lots of walking back and forth and the fact that every quest in your level range directs you to the same area. And that last part makes questing a rather linear experience.
This guys sig should tell you everything you need to know.
I was very impatient to test this game but after two days I have no regret that I didn't pre order it.I find the game boring, monotonous and even ugly at times.
I agree with you RIFT is a much beautiful game both background/graphics and art.
In the land of Predators, the lion does not fear the jackals...
same here...
Congratulations sir! You just encouraged people to judge people on their signatures, further splitting the community on this site apart!
CHEERS!
Au contraire mon ami..... I've played probably about 30 MMO's in the past 5 years and there are a limited few that are top of the tree for me, those being WoW, EQ2, AION, EVE and my personal favorite Lineage 2 but WoW has a slickness and production quality that the others lack so I used that one as a comparison.
Now you might remember me in the Rift forums Matt , I absolutely thought that Rift was the second worst MMO I've ever played only beaten by Warhammer Online. Rift for me is a poor cut and paste, simplistic, small world, wack a mole, tiny insignificant game that really should be put out of its misery sooner rather than later. Compared to TOR its not even in the same universe when it comes to quality and immersion.
Just done the Black Talon Flashpoint and man I was in a Star Wars movie, just a thrilling experience all around.

hahaha.
Nope, after beta it, this game still fail to impress me.
