Honestly, I wasn't overly into it at first... but then I watched the Smuggler videos, and suddenly my interest piqued. I've seen bits and pieces of the gameplay for a while now, but have never been overly interested in the game enough to be really into it and follow the game for longer than like a half hour at a time.
Now I can't help but keep watching these Smuggler video's because it looks so damn fun. All the other classes look boring to me, but there's something that just clicks with me when it comes to the blaster, the cover system, the shadiness of it all, lol...
Maybe I will be picking this game up after all, even if just for a little fun on this one class.
Anyone play the beta and try out the Smuggler yet? What are your thoughts?
PS: I expect to read mostly negativity on this forum, so I won't be surprised when I see it. But whatever.

smuggler is by far the worst playing class IMO. The videos presented look good but when actually played its not fluid at all and everything just feels wrong. First is the enemy AI or lack there of. With a cover system and no AI it makes the whole combat experience insanely stale and unispired. In melee it's no big deal cause you are just exchanging blows but when you add a cover mechanic this aspect sticks out so much and makes it just unenjoyable. Oh and forgot to mention the green cover indicator is just such a bad design feels so out of place.. anything would have been better there even a little arrow
Having said that playing bounty hunter is like night and day. I found bounty hunter to be a ton of fun and everything flowed very smoothly and enjoyed everything about it.
I remember watching all the videos back when smuggler was introduced and was so excited to play the class but man what a let down.

Your opinion, I felt that the IA played very well, and now that AI takes cover you can't just post up and shoot them as they will get out of range or get behind something.
I will be playing smuggler on launch.
I on the other hand enjoyed my experience with the smuggler. The cover mechanic was fun and the smuggler story was to me the most interesting story of all of them. I enjoyed upgrading my blasters with enhancements as I progressed and I was really excited when I got my ship and the story expanded further. So, as is always the case, no class is for everyone.
* edited because I can't type
they do which I read in the patch notes which adds a lot to the class but if there is no cover around the enemy will still shoot at your cover while you blast at them two feet away ducking under your two foot rock(according to my friend who is in the beta now I was not lucky enough to get invite for this last beta)

This is about as true as if you play any ranged class and they get in melee range, they won't cancel out your ranged abilities.
Its good to not force a minimum distance for ranged skills. As an IA or smuggler you also have close range weapons... and some of the AI, like Melee characters are focused on getting behind your cover which makes it useless.
I have been in situations where ranged characters can get on top of a box that I'm using as cover, and they just shoot me at PBR, but if they are on the opposite side of the box you still can mitigate damage completely. Not sure where the issue is here though.
I suppose I could make a few videos on the IA.... but I really don't want to continue playing.. just don't see a point when the wipe is going to come in a little over a week.
I was more pointing out the fact the AI is so dumb it will shoot at your cover from two feet away instead of running around and trying to hit you unless they are a melee npc. Cover systems don't really work well in MMOs because of this. When you think of good cover system like Gears of War then you think of how this plays its pretty bad. Now obviously differn't circumstances since its a MMO not single player game but its the tiny things like looking for cover(which they added thank god) that make a big differnce in how the combat experience goes for this type of system. The green indicator thing bugs me I think the most though it just feels so out of place I really don't understand what they were thinking.

Out of all the classes I played during the beta weekend - Jedi Sage, Bounty Hunter, Sith Inquisitor, etc - my favorite for story was the Smuggler. Gameplay wise the Bounty Hunter was just too much fun in combat, but for the story and conversation responses I loved the Smuggler. Some of the comments made had me laughing out loud.
For gameplay, I think the Smuggler works fine. Hide behind cover and fire out shots and grenades, then they get in close and you smack them with the barrel of your gun or kick them where it hurts (at least that's what the kick does when playing a female). I enjoyed it and I think the Smuggler will be my first character, followed by the Bounty Hunter on the other side when I've max'd it out.
What mmo has good enemy AI? this is not skyrim.
already stated that and thats the issue to bring in a system the revolves around AI to make it interesting and have no AI

i went in just to see what cover system for smuggler ws like and it takes getting used to . The story though drew me in i was just amazed at how good the smuggler story was it may be the bvest story i tried although the inquistior one was almost as good if not as good .
I played the smuggler to 10 inquisitor to 7 beta ended that weekend, warrior to 16, and bh, agent, jedi knight and counselor to the level 5 area and smuggler was if not the best one fo the top 2 stories i tried.
I played the first few levels of Smuggler on the first day of last weekend's beta, and I got bored. I would have agreed with your post almost entirely at that point. But on Monday, after I had gone through the story line levelling a different toon to mid-20ish, I came back to the Smuggler to give it another chance and I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. I think the cover system does need some work, but I generally started to pick my own places for cover instead of always relying on the game's choice for me. I also had plenty of mobs blow my cover line altoghter (especially melee ones), so I am not sure where you're coming from with your AI complaint.
If you only use the suggested cover in a pinch for mobs that are currently targetted, it works well.
Bounty Hunter was fun as hell too, but it isn't the mirror class of Smuggler.
The nice thing is that if you don't like the cover system, you can simple choose to play as scoundrel or operative and have an entirely different gameplay while enjoying the same story line. That, actually, is pretty ingenious.
which is what I plan to do:)

melee ones will go after you since they are of course melee, my issue is ranged npcs who do nothing but auto shoot and there are a LOT of them out there.

I was actually surprised to find that smuggler was one of my favorite classes to play. I think I just preferred ranged to melee. I did have fun rp'ing him as completely self interested.
BH also was fun and to me was a more interesting story. Can't wait to start up again.
Well you just have to accept that for gameplay reasons.
The Smug / IA are built around a cover mechanic, if every mob was smart and ran around the cover it would make cover a usless ability. You kinda have to suspend belief a little in these games and just accept that some things are the way they are to maintain game balance and *fun*.
Negative. The OP is correct. Smuggler is a ton of fun to play. You just have to be willing to use the cover mechanic as it is intended and not play it like a retard. I'm actually surprised the OP found a good Smuggler video, because most of the vids I've seen are of people that don't have a clue how to properly utilize the cover mechanic. I do agree with you on the Bounty Hunter, though. That's still my favorite class. Too bad my stupid guild is going Republic at launch.
To the OP, the Smuggler was one of two class classes (with the IA) that I had no intention of ever playing. They just didn't look like fun from the videos I'd seen and the cover mechanic seemed clunky. After playing it for just a few hours, I fell in love wih it. The combat just felt more reactive than any of the other classes, although I admit that cover makes the Smuggler WAY overpowered in PvE.
The cover mechanic IS clunky. The cover classes would've been far better off without it, especially since all it does is allow you to use certain abilities, most of which don't even make sense in relation to cover. I'm fairly certain it doesn't give any additional bonuses from being in cover.

Me and a Friend are Bad At Games
That's true, but when I was without my companion, they were hurting me enough from cover to make the fights interesting, and when I had Corso Riggs as my companion, they were all aggroed to him anyway.
Congratz to you m8, since u managed to be lucky enough to find the class for you even before the game release, most will just keep making classes to midd lvl at start then eventually keep lvling them till max, wich is sad.
Again gz.
Glory to the Empire
I played Smuggler (gunslinger) to about 16th two beta weekends back and had a load of fun. It was a class I had NOT planned to play at launch but now I am torn . The gunslinger was effective in both PVE and PVP as well. I was planning on Trooper as my guild main and will probably stick to that but I will have a Smuggler character.
If you want to see how a Smuggler does in PVP, Taugrim on twitch TV has a good stream that is recorded. Go check it out.
ha didn't know taugrim already started posting star wars videos. I palyed a lot with that guy in rift. Still watching his video yes they do fine in pvp but god the gameplay just looks horrible. Any of the other classes just look and feel some much more fluid.

The smuggler actually played quite smoothly . Even though i only made it to level 10 . The cover system is kinda cool but a new element that takes getting used to and im nto sure i actually did get used to it.
that said its a ncie neat little system but the smuggeler game play wise is just as smooth as the other classes i played.
I just loved Smuggler in beta. Sure, storyline is not that good compared to some other classes, but gameplay is unique and different. I started with Jedi Knight and went on with Bounty Hunter. I have made Smuggler just for fun, never thought about playing it, but after few hours, i changed my mind completely.
