More and more thinking about this genre that I love I am wondering why there have not been any new server types in some time, here are a few that have been buzzing around in my mind lately, let me get your opinions and suggestions.
1.Hard Mode/Slow progression servers- Basically like turning the difficulty up on a console game, this server has the enemy difficulty raised to something like WOW heroic dungeon difficulty with slow progression when it comes to xp. Or slow progression could be a different server type in itself or maybe a feature to toggle on any server. Honestly out of all the ones I mention here I am really surprised that a Hard Mode server does not exist in any mmos that I can think of. This one just makes sense to be honest and would not be hard to do at all, it also gives massive replay value giving challenge to others that already lvled to cap another toon and want to try something more challenging. I personally wouldn't mind a hard mode-rp server honestly.
2. Enforced rp/Active GMs- Servers that have active gamemasters that enforce rp rules and start events aka EQ1 maybe these would have a higher fee as compared to other servers, not only to pay the gms, but to also ensure that only a certain clientele plays.
3. FFA PVP- Not interested in this one myself, but I am sure plenty of others are. I say why not.
Any others people can suggest?

Don't think any of these beats out the PVP/PVE/RP dichotomy, nor do they justify being layered on top. Even RP being separate is a little shaky imo.
If you wanted more interesting "new server types" I'd go more in a direction of each server very clearly ending a certain point (but you carry over your character between servers.) So you'd join a server and there would be some substantial conflict which would eventually resolve after 1-3 months depending on players' actions, and then the world would reset.
But there are a lot of holes in that idea too.
