This is sort of a statistics game or speculation.
What do we know that could help us make more educated guesses?
- at the Thanksgiving beta weekend there were iirc 88 servers of which most of them were full or had queues.
- there was talk of 750k 'unique' player accounts logged in that weekend
- an MMO server usually can house 10-20k player accounts on average, sometimes more (Aion), sometimes less (Rift)
- in a very rough estimate, the number of players logged in at peak hours is a lot of times something about a fourth to fifth of the total number of players that are linked to that server. Of course, shortly after launch that percentage is higher.
- SWTOR has 900k-1million preorders of US boxes, usually sales vs digital sales is 50-50% and NA subs/players vs EU subs players 60-40% to 50-50%. Which would imply that a projected sales of 3-4 million isn't that far out into the realm of the imaginary
- Aion catered to about 900k NA/EU players with 32 servers, AoC to 500-600k with 49 servers and when Wow had 8 million subs, it also had 390 servers
So, with this data, what do you think the amount of servers will be at launch? 100? 200? 400?

heard somewhere it would be in the 125-150 range at first....sounds good, so I'll go with that.
There were 88 servers in total during beta weekend. Take a guess ,;) I would say maybe 100
How many servers SWTOR will launch with on release?
ShredderSE - Umm how many do they need? Maybe 6.
US, EU, Asian, France, German and Russian.
Subs will be so low there is no need for more
Snoocky-How many servers?
The first 3 months a lot...after that 2 i guess, one for PVE and 1 for PVP...
Thorbrand - SWTOR doesn't have longevity at all. Might be one of the shortest lived MMOs.
Not enough !
MAGA
They might start with around 140 between US and EU but they might have to up that number up real quick.
300+ wouldn't surprise me.
You should ask how much servers will be up and running a day or 3 post launch.
My brand new bloggity blog.
42
120 servers I think is waht is the amount at release, but really it wqill depend on how many pre orders they get
before the 13th . I heard people saying it was 120 . There possibly is about 1200000+ Pre orders right now whcih works out about
10k people on each server exactly. Thats just for preorders though. There maybe a ton of people who buy the game outright on 20th without preorder, but god knows how you work out those stats.

Isn't the answer inherently unpredictable without also speculating on sales totals?
Making a guess based upon a guess--can you see the two degrees of separation? Might as well pitch darts at a dartboard.
Oh, uh...hmm. They'd be foolish to buy too many, so....110-ish, if they can get them installed and updated in time.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
TOR servers can handle 3k concurrent players, using the rule of thumb (which doesnt apply to first 30 days) Only 10% of your playerbase will be online at any given time.
3k x 10 = 30k
Its not viable to go totally overboard in those first 30 days and meet the 20% online at any given time you usually get in the first 30 days as you only end up with server merges within 6 month.
I'm shooting at a 4m sales figure.
4,000,000 / 30,000 = 133.33
So Im gonna go with 135 servers within 3 weeks of head start begining.
I don't know how many servers there'll be but I hope there are more EU English speaking servers than there were in the weekend beta.
Sure, the UK has less population than Germany and France, but there are way more English speakers in Europe than German and French speakers. This was obvious during that beta weekend with the over subbed English servers, so I'm cautiously hopeful.

A bazillion
Hrm, interesting. Those people don't speak their native language, I always assumed English was a secondary language over there?
On topic going to go with 115. With some more added later possibly.

Mount and Blade is having a renaissance fair so she's busy.
All kidding aside, no matter how many they open with it will be too many. It always is, but it shouldn't be anywhere as bad as it was with other games due to the Pre-Guild Registration because Bioware already knows who's going where and when they hit a number to shutdown/reserve spots.
Even with that there is always going to be someone with "HEY! I CAN'T JOIN WITH MY GUILD! SCREW YOU BIOWARE!"
"TO MICHAEL!"
last i heard they are looking at 150 servers.
Lots.
Of course after month 1 alot will close (its the natural order) Then around mo 3 more will close and the population will become stable. Why people see this as a bad thing is beyond me .. its just the way things happen. The game (IMOHO) will be very profitable, of course that wont stop people who want the game to fail to point out each server shut down as a massive fail (Which its not, its just what happens when these games go live)
MMOs are not like other games in this respect. They sell a product and are expected to provide access, which they do. The people who dont like said product (Dont be fooled there will be many) leave and they shut down the servers no longer being taken advantage of. This is NOT a bad thing for a new MMO, its just the nature of how the market works and I do wish people would accept that rather than get freaked out by servers closing.
It only becomes an issue when the game population falls below the profit margin the company has set for it.
What the... i can't believe someone actually think that SWTOR will actually have 6 servers.

I sure hope they put up more servers for English-speaking Europeans. One of the servers had 2 days and 14 hours as queue time in the beta I played.
<childish, provocative and highly speculative banner about your favorite game goes here>
OVER 9000!!!
whaaaaaaaat?!
i lived in belgium for years....there were WAY more french and german speakers than english speakers. infact, almost everyone in my village spoke both french and german, whereas maybe 10-15% spoke even broken english. for the most part, i found that to be the case in france, germany, and spain as well. although.... europeans have a bad habit of pretending they dont speak english when they find out you are an american though... so my experience could have been slightly scewed.
