Objectivity of gaming sites?

MetentsoMetentso Member UncommonPosts: 1,437

After seeing how conveniently MMORPG.COM has published the "No elves manifesto", obviously aimed at given SWTOR and extra push, like it needs it... but well EA and Bioware will see MMORPG.COM as a "friend" site now, or if they did already, the feeling is reassured. Anyway I want to ask the community, what you think about the relation between gaming sites and publishers and developers. Is there any possibility of any objectivity, given the mutual interests they have in common? Points at SWTOR add in the background.

Alot of sites have no objectivity.  I think the only one that does is metacritic, and that is because they aren't really doing much besides averaging all the reviews of magazines and online reviews of games.

This site doesn't like you talking bad about games.  They want you to say all games are good.  Even if you quit a game for valid reasons.

The game is dead not, this game is good we make it and Romania Tv give it 5 goat heads, this is good rating for game.

You are seeing way too much into it. i doubt 'no elves manifesto' is a push towards being friends or on good side of EA / Bioware. As far as SWTOR adv in background, it is the same with every big release. Would you still complain when GW2, TSW and other big releases will hug background for days? probably not.

How many servers SWTOR will launch with on release?

ShredderSE - Umm how many do they need? Maybe 6.
US, EU, Asian, France, German and Russian.
Subs will be so low there is no need for more
    Snoocky-How many servers?
The first 3 months a lot...after that 2 i guess, one for PVE and 1 for PVP...

Thorbrand - SWTOR doesn't have longevity at all. Might be one of the shortest lived MMOs.

I have to agree with this person, also.  The already have SWTOR's advertising dollars.  On the flip side, you usually don't want to bite the hand that feeds you.

Yup, I'm sure their article is based on Star Wars having no elves. It would have nothing to do with being an off-take of Global Agenda's No Elves advertising campaign. It's all about Star Wars.

So basically, you're looking for objective opinions?  Good luck with that.

All media sources are biased.  It's only a question of what their biases are.  And that bias isn't necessarily a bad thing, either, as without it, there's no way to decide that this event is big news and that one is irrelevant.

Simply mind numbing to see how much you bitch about TOR.

You speak of objectivity, found on this site, on the main forums here? Are you kidding me? Where were you when myself, and others like me were being told if we didnt enjoy SWG, we didnt have a clue?

I seriously doubt you are a themepark gamer, as EQ was the epitome of themepark gaming. Some ideas in TOR descend from games like EQ, and yet you spew hate about the game constantly. Something doesnt make sense. That something being you of course.

It is in MMORPGs best interest to attract players of games like TOR, instead of sticking with the jaded fan base that is still whining about "We want the PRECioUs". If that entails printing articles that shed games in a positive light, then so be it. It sure beats the write up we had to Darkfall, and the amount of fail that game delivered.

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

I think a website specialized on MMOs shouldn't be objective. Reviews should be objective, but articles with biased opinions and a clear stance for or against something are usually much more fun to read.

No, jedis are the elves, top jedis are the wizards, and the stormtroopers are the orcs. The ewoks are the dwarves, the cheewakas the ogres and the gnomes are those guys with the orange eyes. All the archetypes are there with a different skin. So you are playing SWTOR? you are playing a fantasy MMO. It's well known SW is fantasy sci-fi anyway.

Key factor is this, MMORPG.com is a hobbyist / fansite. This is what just about any gaming site is, objectivity goes about as far as what the contributers find fun or what they find frustrating.

Contributers are both advertisers and visitors. I don't know if all visitors are like the forumers, but I see many polls in the forums supporting sandbox games, and not so much mmorpg.com.

I think you will find that used to be true but isn't really now.

MMORPG.com is a professional run business these days. It's 'fansite' status is long gone...

Very true, and it is designed to entertain it's audiance, being a totally objective new source is not its purpose at all.

But in the case of the OP I don't agree, there's no correlation between the two events and no, EA/Bioware is not directly buying favor with the site, even if they are purchasing adverstising on it.

Jon has repeatedly stated the business side of the site is completely separate from the editorial side.

Does it really matter that much? Gaming companies and sites focused on gaming live in a symbiosis. It's just good business to write an article about a game that's about to release - get the word out and create hype. Everyone get's paid!

I have nothing against it - just as long as it's honest.

Writing a bullshit review or fairytales from unfinished games because you get paid more is where I draw the line. And so far mmorpg.com staff hasn't yet shaken my belief in them.

But it's not an article about a game that's about to release. It's an article dissing and riduculing all the MMOs that are high fantasy, indirectly making MMOs without elves look like "the cool thing", which is... oh what a coincidence, for instance... SWTOR.

It was supoosed to be funny and humorus which it is. I have no idea why you are taking it so personally as if elves really exist. If they do i would rather let them come forward and protest.
