Every MMORPG out or in development has been ruined for me by Skyrim.

I know, I know. There's really no practical way a developer could make an MMORPG that looks as stunning as Skyrim, a single player RPG. The hardware requirements for a game like that with MMO-level crowds running around would be impractical. Not to mention, the resulting MMO probably wouldn't be as good because they wouldn't be able to tune a world like that to masses of players (or you'd end up with instancing and phasing...and then you're just playing a single-player game anyway).

It's unfortunate, because now that I'm playing Skyrim, every single video I see of any MMORPG- and yes, that means Guild Wars 2 as well -just looks so incredibly bland and boring. *sigh*

Thats so sad. If u pick games off looks u miss some very fun enjoyable games.

By the way once u play tor for yourself the graphics in game to me look amazing. I like them better then skyrim but thats because i like stylized graphics and couldnt stand the gamplay in skyrim the game was pretty but i didnt have any fun

I think that allowing looks to pck a game is sad cause u miss out on so much that may be fun and enjoyable to u.

I know the feeling. Nothing in the works, and nothing for years, surely, could possibly compete. But you have to give up things for a multiplayer experience, graphics among them. It is just the world we live in, and the technical limitations we have right now. Perhaps it won't always be that way, but for now, we have to deal with the limitations of the technology. You can't have a world like that that can adapt to hundreds or thousands of players. GW2 might be great, but it won't be like Skyrim.

    WTF? No subscription fee?

I've played in the SWTOR beta. It was fun (I loved the heck out of both Kotor games) but in the end, it felt like either "Just another quest hub MMO", which is really bad, or "Like KOTOR but with other people playing", which is good. But not good enough.

And it isn't just the graphics that are awesome in Skyrim; it's the world design, the feeling you're never just running past a vague sort of hill-shaped mesh with a crummy astroturf texture applied....ah heck. Getting depressed again. :)

Its a fine balance of appreciating a game on its own merits and using a game as a bar standard for other games.

I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means - except by getting off his back.

i can understand that. I can . skyrim just wasnt for me. i didnt like the way my combat stuff built up felt clunky to me. it was enough of a issue for me i ended up having no fun. I can see why ud love skyrim its a very nice looking game taht ran fine on my ps3. . my nephew by the way loved skyrim.

i just think in mmos u have to look past the looks and just see what u enjoy as most mmos just cant give u the quality of graphics u get in a game like skyrim.

    I don't get it.

I love Skyrim. It's every superlative you can think of, but in the end it's a single player game. Every MMO I've played for more than 5 minutes has been down to the people I met, helped, grouped with, hung out with. They kept me playing, not the graphics or quests or storylines but simply people. Surely that's why you play MMOs - to play with other people?

Bethesda makes some beautiful games, but I've never liked their control schemes and combat mechanics so I just cant get into morrow wind and Skyrim.  The day will come though where photo realistic games will be the norm.  Cant wait :)

FFXIV would like to say Hi, and disagree with you!  An MMO can look just as good as a 1P game, but at the same time I will agree that an MMO cannot quite possess the level of interaction that Skyrim or rather the Elder Scrolls series allows.

I actually dont think thats true. Photo realism doesnt age well and in a medium like an mmo where your game worlds live on for yrs and yrs its not the smartest choice graphics wise to go with

i can see why people lvoe them . Skrim is a gorgeous world to play in ill admit that. Its just stylized graphics like tor and wow age so much better.

That is why mmos use them as much as they do. Its why i dotn see them going to all photorealistic graphics in the future. Until those graphcis can be upgraded for minimum cost and with out to much time invested to do so that will never be teh case in mmos.

I can say one thing, Or two things that actually end up being one thing, which is in referrence to two games that have been mentioned before, AND what this topic is about in a round about way sorta thing! Long run on sentence this may be, but you must listen to me! The Story in Skyrim is what you expect from a good RPG. It's entertaining. It drives you to see what is at the end. Even the side quests make you want to see the end of those quests. It's compelling, it's driving. With SWTOR, the story is also driving, and makes you keep wanting more of the story, and more and more. I played the beta for two weekends, and I swear, no other game could complete me like SWTOR did. I was a lonely soul after the beta was gone. It's all about the story for me, and the immersion. I simple can't wait for that game to release. Skyrim is a brillant game no doubt, and I am still playing it ( 60 Hours + in ) So do not get me wrong there =) But DAMN SWTOR is going to be as epic to me as well!

I know exactly how you feel OP, because I have the same problem.   :(   Maybe if Bethesda would release a modified version of Skyrim for co-op play it would help.   Nevertheless, Skyrim is the game I'll be playing for years to come and I'll be happy doing it.   Once the modding community gets their hands on the tool set and Bethesda releases more DLC.   I'm a happy gamer.

Not me,  I like skyrim alot but the excitement of finding that perfect mmo is hard to top.   The problem as of late IS finding that special mmo....that's the hard part.

Yup!  I've only gotten as far as Whiterun and the initial dragon fight where you learn you're Dragonborn.  Work has been keeping me especially busy this holiday and I havn't been abel to play much, but I'd much rather wait on proper mods and whatnot before playing it complete.

With Oblivion I ran the storyline straight through and thus, didn't enjoy the truly great mods later on.  So I'm going to wait on them this time and slowly progress through the story along with all the additions...

I know...amazing how long I ahve played in and around Whiterun and am still finding things to do.    LOL!   I bet I have spent 75% of my time in game playing my characters in the area around Whiterun.   I just got my Khajiit some new Forsworn armor and outfitted her with new bow and sword she found off a thief that tried to rob her.    I am working on clearing the ruin NW of Whiterun and having a lot of fun.  Amazingly, I was taking my character through the hills near Whiterun when I cam across this ruins.  Been through the area it seems a hundred times on my other character and never ducked into the trees that are nestled in the hills - when I did I found some hidden ruins and a cave entrance.   I swear if you go too fast in this game you'll miss so much stuff.   So I have learned to slow down and really take my time...if you don't you can miss little things like hidden bandit hideouts entrances behind waterfalls or a secret entrance into a fort.    Game is just so awesome...and reminds me of my pen and paper gaming days.

Yup, Skyrim has set the bar for me in terms of what is the next "it" for mmo's.

Same here. Skyrim is fantastic. It's such a beautiful world.

All those posters who say you can't get that old feeling back, you're wrong. Nostalgia is BS. Get some new talking points.

in the same boat i haven't been able to play a MMORPG without wishing it was more like skyrim. i basically quit the SWTOR beta because it wasn't skyrim and the SWTOR world felt dead compared to that of Skyrim.

oh im at quest hub 1, then after i do these quests i will go to quest hub 2 ... and so on and so forth. in skyrim after finishing the dark brotherhood line (HAIL SITHIS!!!!!!!!) i found myself just jumping in and thinking "im going to head west today". then as i said in a post a long time ago I was like the curiosity core of Portal as im travelling ...

    "ooo whats that"

    "what is that"

    "hey look at that thing"

    "ooo hey whats over there"

"oooo that thing has numbers on it"

    "oh whats that over there"

    "whats in heeerreeee?"

sorry but when an MMORPG can make me do that I will probably stick with.

    Agree on the graphics comment.

Disagree on ToR. Even as a long time Star Wars fan and KOTOR fan, ToR was just bleh. Lame quests, filtered....just...same ole same ole and not worth a sub...IMO of course.

If you are big into exploration I can understand where you are coming from. There's a lot of cool places to really explore in Skyrim and just walking around can be a fun experience. The perk system is fun, despite being unbalanced. The skill leveling system is great, but would have to not be as exploitable in a MMO.

Outside of that, something like Dark Souls has done a lot more to raise the bar for my future MMOs. The combat system is amazing, I like the dark world, and more importantly the game has actual tension. Skyrim is fun to play because the world they created is top notch, despite being filled with bland characters. However it still leaves me with the same feeling whenever I playing another MMOs, and really whenever I'm playing most MMOs. There's no real tension in the games. I'm not too concerned about losing and death and it doesn't happen very often outside of PvP that really lacks any sense of loss or enough skill.

Must agree, after playing skyrim for 200+ hours now, (And STILL have not done any of the main questline.) I can no longer find any interest in any MMOs, It's like having used a jumbo sized LCD HDTV, and then trying to go back to a black and white box tv. Not the best analogy, but it works.

I suppose after having spent all my free time playing this after several more months (God help me when the mods start flowing in January.) and after having lost all social life whatsoever, perhaps MMOs will get a small measure of my attention back... maybe...

To find an intelligent person in a PUG is not that rare, but to find a PUG made up of "all" intelligent people is one of the rarest phenomenons in the known universe.

When MMOs have lost the community aspect, that's what happens. They just can't compare to a good SPG.

good for you, not playing any mmorpg again will probably save you alot of paine and frustration.
