Hopefully I will start playing SWTOR tomorrow. I had a LOT of FUN in a couple of weekends and some week days in beta.
I will play SWTOR until it stops being FUN. 1 month, 1 year? Who knows? And it doesn't worry me at all...
This game is a MMORPG and follows the "conventional" route, adding some of its own features. To me and millions out there who play the "same formula" MMOs it seems to be good enough. To others it isn't. In the end of the day I will have FUN playing it as others will keep pursuing the "ideal" MMO that can or cannot ever come out.
What is wrong, untrue, biased, call it whatever you want, is presenting TSW (I have some high expectations here, balanced with horrendous fear of what Failcom is capable of), GW2 or Tera as games that are bringing something completely new.
TSW will have classes; progression inside classes will be done more freely (well, rule number one, don't ever trust FC, so we will see what will really come). However MMOs without classes aren't a novelty (Fallen Earth for example).
Tera's combat... "first-person-shooter styled combat" is new? I haven't tried Tera's way of delivering it, but again in Fallen Earth you have a combat like that. You mentioned DDO; from my very little experience there it seems to have a similar combat (here I can be wrong because I only tried it for a couple of hours).
GW2. Here I expect some different things from the usual. The introduction of a new group dynamic without the conventional trinity. The continuous dynamic quest presentation (because sporadic or regular dynamic events are not new) will also be different from the traditional model. As for combat as far as I know it will be in a cone of damage base model, wich fails to be a new feature.
So it seems that many of those expected new features will be majorly a recycling of lesser used features from other MMOs.
However, bringing a lot of novelties doesn't mean that those games will succeed. The amount of people having fun with them will dictate that. Personnaly I would love to enjoy all of them; that would bring me more options. By now, just waiting for tomorrow...
No, I blame WoW for the horrid direction ALL MMOs have gone as of late. MMOs are dying because they try too hard to become WoW... they want to make millions and they think the only way to do it is to replicate the formula in WoW. Well guess what, if it was so great, why are all these players trying out other MMOs? Take a hint, scrap WoW as a model, and start over. Completely over. Make a game that can't be completed in less than 2 weeks. Build it, and they will come.
Well swtor is so linear so dumbed down, that you are better go watch a movie.
Its mindless themepark
Go there (battleground), do it with these (tank, heal, dps or you fail), do this (raid you have to stand on boulder x, and player y has to cast spell z to win) , you do it. And call it FUN
And when you will do everything what is prepared to you, bam, new expansion folks, wow another 5 levels and new bind equip gear yaaay, so you do it over again and over. But you are having fun right?
these games are brainwashing imho. You are about to loose all free will and creativity, dont let these so called developers manipulate you like a mindless herd and robots.
EA hasnt made UO or DAoC F2P therefore I think it's highly unlikely that they'll make SWTOR f2p...EA DOES have track record of closing down online games that doesnt bring them profits, and remember Lucasarts took away SWGs licence before letting it go F2P too.
You bet I'll be playing but not when it comes out but days before that (hopefully tomorrow) with early acces. My CE box will arrive on Thursday.
EDIT: Just received a mail from the retailer, it will be coming tomorrow!
Oh and I'm quite sure there will be other Traditional MMO's. The cow hasn't been milked completely. And no TOR won't go FTP ever, in that case they could have done the same already with SWG (which will be closing in 3 days). LA only goes the way of the coin.
Not because it's Star Wars. Not because it's a Bioware game. Not because I hate World of Warcraft and believe that Blizzard is being managed by demons from hell.
I will be playing Star Wars: The Old Republic because it's new. I haven't played it.
If it continues to keep my interest beyond the first, free month, then I will subscribe. I will continue to subscribe until it fails to hold my interest. And then I will move on to the next, new game.
I couldn't care less about others' opinion of a game. I prefer to form my own.
Forming your own opinion is always the best way to go. I also plan on playing. I enjoyed my beta time and hope that Bioware did not over simplify the game since I last played.
I'm looking forward to playing the game, enjoying for what it is...entertainment.
Oh, and I really look forward to Lacey Chabert doing Mako's voice overs, live, next to me, when early game access time comes around. True story. Then again, I might get distracted and go AFK...
Well if the graphics were better and all, less cartoonish, better animated, maybe. But they are so 2005 and we are in 2011... Compared to the next releases (GW2 and TERA mostly) this looks sooooooooooooooooooooooooo outdated already. Hell, it looks even worse than DOTA2...
About mechanics, well it's more of the same. Some stuff is new like the pvp badges, the flashpoints aren't anything that hasn't been done before (like even in SWG for example) but they've got the story for them.
Problem is that i don't see any end game content worth mentionning, lvl 50 raids, challenging ones, PVP dailies, OW PVP with some scenarios, maybe even PVP events. This can be fun if they add it the couples months following launch. If not, then, well, people will probably play a couple chars to go thru story (granting it's not the same for everyone once you're 30+) then stop for something else.
The ball's in Bioware's camp, because for 15$ a month, they better deliver.
You're a Hardcore Survivor!
You not only survived the zombie apocalypse, but did it with style! Your mastery of zombie knowledge, survival tactics, and weaponry is nearly unmatched. Congratulations, for you are hardcore!
"Traditional" is such a tactful way of putting it, but it's not in the tradition of UO, or AC. Nor of AO, SWG, or DAOC. It's even quite a stretch to say it's in the tradition of EQ..
I'm still on the fence as far as how "non-traditional" these other MMOs will be, though. I will be, until I see for myself, but I am hoping they will be as diverse from one another as the aforementioned MMOs were in their day.
Looking forward to finding out, but in the meantime, yeah.. I'll be giving TOR a more serious chance than I gave it during beta. Maybe it will open up at higher level, as they say...
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Onthesticks post above is beautiful, I think someone should do that for every troll posting here, key is to read the post right before his too the timestamp shows about 10:30 eastern if your looking for it.
I think SWToR has raised the bar for entering the market successfully as a subscription game. I don't think it's a Swan Song for the genre though. There's going to be another dry spell after GW2 and TSW release, but it won't die.
Yes, I have to agree SWTOR has raised the bar for mmorpgs. Will be atreat to play this one soon.
Swtor is going to completely change mmorpgs and world of warcraft will die, people will cream thier pants everytime they log in and out, in and out, this is way more than a swan song its bigger, harder, and better then you could ever imagine its a 2 chord porn song with glowsticks and multiple exoctic partners get your jelly ready, how did you prepare for this? You worked out

Cartoon yes they are and I would prefer another direction, but isn't GW2 cartoon also?
So 2005? That one deserves a big LOL. Have you tried to play with AA for example? And just for you to remember, if you tried it, you were in beta...
However I don't think graphics are the most important thing in a MMO, that's for sure... And for GW2 and Tera, well they can have good graphics, but the art direction is very very far from my personnal taste (have you even look at the size of the weapons? And elves again?!

I agree with a lot of other posts in this thread. The game will have strong sales initially, but 4 - 8 months from now subscriptions will drop off sharply. The game will go f2p by next Christmas.

All I really care about is the fact that in TOR's beta I had more fun than in any other mmorpg (WAR, Aion, SWG, Lotro, Dndo, FFXIV lol, DCUO, CoH, CO, AoC and some other crap I cant even remember) since back in the day when I fired Anarchy Online on.
It could have some bigger twists or features, but regardless I really enjoy the game. Bioware makes the future for this game, not some C-B predictions. It's a good game if you like traditional RPG's, if you dont, why bother wasting forum space and your time?

I have already played KoToR on Xbox, and I see nothing new here. I would get just as much enjoyment watching any of the first 3 movies (not the prequels) as I would playing this game.
Sorry

Well maybe sometime around 2022 you'll finally get your chance to consider playing it . This wont be going free to play for many many years to come .
The argument that its a 'Lucas' product and they will never do F2P so will never go F2P is flawed.. they already have a free to play Star Wars product. Clone Wars Adventures, a browser MMO lite. That said, its unlikely it will happen anytime soon because of the cost of the games production. Which I personally think they will make back in the first few monthes anyways.
I do enjoy the game and totally am gonna be playing, I like star wars but its not enough to hold me into a game.. and I'm not a fan or hater of biowares past offerings. So I am going into SWTOR purely as a MMORPG fan looking for something different story wise to play. I'm tired of high fantasy, I get my modern fix from FPS I play... I want sci-fi, and with the possible exception of EVE which is too fiddly for my tastes, and AO which is just painfully dated... the market is BADLY devoid of even decent sci-fi MMOs. I don't care that the play is like all the other games that came before it, because I enjoyed playing those too. So why is that a problem? I enjoyed the beta, and each new beta weekend only made me love it that much more. So thats why I am playing.. I had fun in the game.. and isnt that the actual point of a game?

See if you agree or not and then discuss the article in the comments.
Pretty much only one way for the thread to go after that.
But yes, it has raised the bar some, (especially for wanna be themepark makers) but we still won't see every MMORPG follow suite.
