I've never played the game before, but for years now. People have been telling me how great this game is. Never tried it because I was playing Star Wars Galaxies, then Age of Conan, and now DC Universe Online & The Lord of the Rings Online. To me it looks like a cookiee cutter Korean grinder. With all that said, I ask again. What is the appeal of this game? Why would I want to try it? What makes it a must try?
When we get back from where we are going, we will return to where we were. I know people there!

There is no appeal to the game at all. Keep playing what ever it is you have been playing.
^^^This^^^. It went f2p just awhile back, and I thought I'd see what it was like. Pass.
The same question has been discussed on this page...
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/333930/What-makes-this-game-special.html
These questions make me so tired... always the same.
In short:
-Server poltics
-Clan wars
-Castle sieges
-(Massive) PvP for raids/resources.
-Open PvP which enables all of the above.
Ive played beta back in 2003 and first 2 years after launch. Now after so many years its free so i thought lets check it out.
Man this game has change alot its totally different game plus i see mainly people from eastern europe i think i wonder if there are any english speaking people on euro server?
Start area with new character L2 sucks this is totally different L2 i knew from first years after that its fast real fast lvling im lvl60 in 3 days lol, plus PVP is dumb down so much its now not worth anymore to pvp and almost nobody pvp other wise they dont progress and have win there karma back by killing millions of mobs lol. I dont even know if your red you drop items when your killed?
L2 is no fun anymore its dumb down version to please the themepark crowed who want hold hand ezmode version.

People PvP for the primary reasons PvP is implemented in the game: Castle ownership, Fortress Ownership, Clan Wars, territory control, claim over raid bosses and/or hunting areas. That hasn't changed. It's quieter now as everything's basically been given a complete reboot and everyone's getting their bearings. Given time, however, everything will return to normal. It will also help when NC gets their server situation sorted out so you can move around a populated area without lagging every 10 seconds.
Outside of that, the only thing that would have been "toned down" is random PK/Ganking which hasn't been eliminated but rather has had its repercussions stiffened. L2 differentiates between PvP and PK/Gank. If both people are fighting, both go aggressive and if one dies, neither goes red. That's PvP. No harm, no foul.
However, ganking/PK'ing someone who doesn't fight back (AFK, not wanting to fight knowing it's pointless, etc) does incur a cost because it *wasn't* PvP. It was a random, and likely extremely one-sided gank/PK job. The risk in that situation falls entirely on the ganker/PK'er and forces a decision: Is PK'ing that person worth the cost of having to work off all that karma, while making themself a bulls-eye at the same time? If yes - if it's a revenge kill or whatever, then it may be worthwhile. If it's not, then they have the choice of not attacking. It gives people pause and encourages them to choose their fights more carefully.
At the end of the day, though, the only part of L2's PvP system that's been affected is the one that has the least affect on the game overall. The only ones I really see complaining about it are the ones who thought they were going to run around freely ganking to their heart's content without repercussion, as though they were playing a MMO variation of Unreal Tournament or something. Or, that they'd be able to just grab a sin-eater quest and go hide in a dungeon or remote corner of Aden somewhere and wash their karma away in almost complete safety.
There will still be PKs, and there will still be Ganking.. There will still be perma-red characters haunting certain areas preying on other players (likely much weaker ones), etc. In the long run, having such stiff penalties for random PK is a benefit to more people than it is a nuisance. There's nothing "hardcore" or "meaningful" in people standing outside Talking Island Village PK'ing new players as they run out. Nor is there any point to standing outside Gludio, Gludin, Dion or any of the other lower level towns for that reason. Nothing in the game's design requires nor rewards that kind of behavior.
All that said, I do agree about the new "unified" starting area. I don't like it either. I think there should have at least been a couple options more. For one, there's enough people playing now that it's free that I don't think any of them would be "empty" and it would certainly help with the crowding problem the game had from the release of GoD and still persists now. And of course, it gives people more options on where/how to start.
and the cash shop selling asphalt..." - Mimzel on F2P/Cash Shops
Totally agree with this post I'll just add a few other reasons why people love L2. The world is huge.. full of surprises especially if you go off the beaten path.. Beautiful.. it's a world that you feel like you'd like to be part of. I'm going to say the suggested path is only one of many options to play this game. It is definitely not a themepark as someone said it was.. if you try and treat it as one it will come of very lacking and isn't a picture on how the later levels work. Personally I've sworn off that path until I see more open dailies and have found a better spot to level for my class. As to the cookie cutter korean grinder comment.. well this is the mold not "just another". After you realize that and play more than just the surface you might see what I'm saying.
Yeah... I noticed that the 'Path to Awakening' includes some of the suckiest leveling spots in the game for 40+. I understand why they did it that way however. Because there is only one 'path' and some classes are far better at soloing then others they had to choose areas any class could do. For example some of the better solo classes can handle The Enchanted Valley from 40-55 just fine while others would really struggle with it. This is why they suggest The Ivory Tower and The Forest of Outlaws.

Running your own bot party is about the only appeal at the moment, unless mindless grind for the next 6 months to compete with the top players is your idea of a good time.
I thought NC learned something when the eased up on the levels to your 4th class change, but after its the same ole L2 insanity of old, NOT fun.
The game is great, atleast for me. If you dont want any bots go to the Europe shards run by INOVA.
People saying its dumbed down because you reach 60lvls in 3 days are plain baka... The game has 99 levels. And the new newbie line is set to lvl 76~. I mean you do realise that getting something 90-91lvl is like doing 1-70 righ ? Cmon people this game is like what? 10 years old? Theres like 1000x more endgame content added in those years, ncsoft wants to get you out of the 'pit' as fast as possible. Alot of things are changed in those years, if you played during c1-c5 now it might seem like a totaly pimped out game, but it still remains one of the most hardcore grinders out there - dont believe me? Get past the 90 lvl mark
Fellow players,
We would like to thank you again for a great job that you’ve done while bot-hunting this week. You and us working as a team managed to detect more than 250 violators, who have been using third-party software.
We sincerely believe all of them deserve a chance to improve, therefore they get a warning blocking for 24 hours and an e-mail with a note. We insist that they remove this software from their PCs.
In case they don’t, this may lead to permanent character blocking.
We encourage EACH and EVERYONE to exorcise any third-party software from your PCs. If you ignore this, remember, you’ll be the next. And there’ll be no mercy!
Since WEDNESDAY anyone detected with this software gets 10-day character blocking without warning.
As a mod of the Euro L2 bords I have to say that more actions than stated in above post are taken on the Innova servers and people who gets caught again will have a way harsher penality.
As said, the appeal of this game is the PvP and the importance it has. Pretty different from MMOs in which PvP is confined to instances that don't have any impact in the game world at all, this has a strong community bonding effect.
Anyone that thinks any L2 server or service doesn't have bots is dreaming.
You couldn't design a more perfect game for botting and RMT then Lineage 2.
yere im sure the 7 days will be awfull for them... thats a 7 times harder punishment
lineage 2 was very popular for a very good while!and kept being popular in korea for years!here in america it did insanelly good
when it lunched till about when blizzard lunched bc then it got forgotten !but i bet a lot of people everywhere have been hammered verbaly for years about this and that in l2 or silkroad!
now people get to try their hands at the game and the polish they put in it make it worth it!dont forget to disable netdma and direct cache access if you use intel(not sure about amd)and enable tcp chimney offload!
if you arent on a server this is best setting
dont forget that in this game death penalty is there so you might need to use your brain to progress cause if you die you might loose a day or more worth of progressing!and grinding xp isnt exactly the best idea on the planet!
it only reached about 120.000 subscribers back around C2, the highest number ever then it went downhill, and i doubt its because of blizzard but more the inability of ncsoft to give a damn about cheaters.
This!
I haven't been playing MMO's for the past year or so, but picked up SWTOR with quite a few of my rl friends. I was so dissapointed that SWTOR's main pvp content is instanced mini-games that have absolutely no risk/reward factor or impact.
Playing watered down PvP just made me nostalgic for L2. As I waited in a stupid queue for a PvP quick-match, I thought about the huge castle sieges. While I had people stealing my quest mobs, I remember being able to kill players for that in L2. As I robotically went from quest hub to quest area, back to quest hub, I remembered having to watch my back and scope things out during clan war.
I popped over to the L2 site just to see if the game was even still alive and, if so, what had changed in the 4 or 5 since I'd played it. Apparently alot! Most of the grind is basically gone (though I didn't really mind it), auction house system was added (hunting for private shops always annoyed me), and it's free now! I've been playing L2 again for about a month now and haven't touched SWTOR since =D
Amen.

I'd just like to add / differ at C1 - C5.
C3 - to High Five was the first downgrade.
Meaningful penalties have been what kept meaningful PVP going on. The introduction of Blessed Resurrection along with the Sin Eater destroyed any penalties for Pking.
It basically played into the hands of the botter / Adena buyer.
Only the botter / Adena buyer could afford to waste more money for karma washing than they have earned in a month and giving them a safe way to do it on top was a major break in balance.
>- You can't hunt down reds anymore because they wash karma at the clan hall.
The years of rmts running rampant took their toll too. Highly OEed Gear became the norm and not affordable by regular means *hint hint*
