Are Operatives any good?

When I was playing in the beta, I was trying to decide if I wanted to go Sniper or Operative, but I never really got around to picking because there wasnt any real info on operatives in the forums.
Are operatives any good? Do they do a decent amount of damage (enough to keep up with all of the other dps clases), and are they good in PVP?
